KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Basel
Basel is a great place to be based, especially with a hire car. A vehicle will allow you to explore not only the city’s main attractions, such as its many art galleries and museums, but also other destinations in Switzerland, Germany, and France. Head to Rotteln Castle in Germany, which is only about 25 minutes away from Basel, or to the Black Forest for some fairytale-like views.
EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg (EAP) is about a 10-minute drive from Basel’s city center. The airport is divided into two sectors, the French one and the Swiss one, and you can circulate between both through the access area on the terminal’s third floor. Car hire desks on the French side are located on level 2 of Hall 1, and on the Swiss side they can be found on level 2 of Hall 4.
Because the Old Town area can be tricky to navigate, opt for parking the car in the surrounding areas instead. If you do drive there, remember that trams always have the priority. Dipped headlights must be on at all times. If you drive through rural areas, be cautious as you may come across herds of animals crossing the roads.
As with any main city, Basel experiences some heavy traffic during peak hour, so avoid driving between 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., and then again between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. during the week. The A35 heading to the airport can also get quite congested during rush hour, so if you have to be at the airport at a specific time, plan your journey accordingly.
Basel is known for its modern art scene and the city has over 40 museums, including the world-famous Beyeler Foundation. Scheduling trips to multiple art shows and museums is a popular reason for visiting Basel, but getting from one display of art to the next can be confusing as navigating Basel can be tricky due to its intricate road system, especially for first-time visitors. When you book your cheap car hire in Basel be sure to add a GPS to help you find your way around the city's winding streets and alleys, saving you time and reducing stress.
Basel is surrounded by stunning attractions that are easily accessible by car. Book your cheap car hire in Basel and head out on day trips to popular attractions such as Rheinfall, which is about 1 hour from Basel and is home to one of Europe's largest waterfalls. Or spend the day walking around the medieval architecture in Lucerne. Hiring a car also allows you to explore the beautiful Swiss countryside. Keep in mind while driving from place to place that Switzerland has one of the lowest speed limits in Europe, which means you need to stay aware and alert of speed limits to avoid incurring any additional charges.
When renting a car in Basel, Switzerland, it's important to keep in mind that the city is part of the Swiss motorway vignette system. This means that if you plan to use the motorways in and around Basel, you will need to purchase a vignette or risk being fined. The vignette can be purchased at gas stations, post offices, or online and costs CHF 40 for an annual pass. Additionally, be aware of the local traffic regulations and parking restrictions, as they can be strictly enforced. If you plan on driving in the city centre, consider renting a smaller car, as the streets can be narrow and parking can be limited

After dropping the car off and being told that the car was okay after the inspection, Hertz over 24 hours later emailed me assessing me over $200 in damages. Is it because I returned the car full of gas and they couldn’t charge me over $200 for that? I don’t know, but it’s super shady in my opinion. Emailed them, and it’ll take 10 business days before I even get to hear back. What a joke!
Some Basel car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Basel.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Basel car hire.
