What is long-term car hire?

Long-term car hire typically refers to hiring a car for 30 days or more. It’s ideal for people who need a vehicle for extended periods without committing to a lease. It’s also perfect if you’re visiting a destination for a longer period and need the flexibility of always having transportation available. Many agencies offer a lower daily rate than shorter car hire periods, meaning it can also be a cost-effective option.

How is long-term car hire different from a lease?

Long-term hire is more flexible than leases, with no long-term contract, lower upfront costs, the ability to return the car when needed, and usually no early termination fees.

Absolutely disgraceful. On arrival I was asked to hand over my license & credit card. After a minute of tapping on her computer the Alamo representative said “we haven’t got a car for you”. Apparently they’d ran out & she said they didn’t have enough for people who’d booked months ago let alone me ( who’d booked the day before. I asked what I was supposed to do. She said “I don’t know” She also told me that they had tried calling me but I had no missed calls or voicemails. Thankfully Avis helped me.

Our experience with Enterprise Rent-A-Car was excellent. The staff at the Glasgow pick up were efficient, kind, and realistic. They made it a very positive experience and put our minds at ease. The drop off in Edinburgh was just as great an experience. We felt the staff were genuine, kind, and helpful.

I did not get the economy car I reserved. Instead, I was given a bigger vehicle that was unsuitable for England's narrow roads. The gas tank was almost empty when I picked up the vehicle. I brought it back with the tank half full but was not reimbursed. Enterprise refused to pick me up at my hotel so I could pick up the car. I had to hire a taxi to bring me to Enterprise.

I asked for a pick up but the store I rented from said I wasn’t in their zone. It was a 17 minute drive. They offered to change my rental to a closer location to me but that location doesn’t do pick ups. Despite that being their main corporate motto and why I chose enterprise. So I had to walk about 20 minutes for pick up. There was a line out the door when I arrived. 45 minutes later I was served and rushed. I wasn’t the only 10am appointment but the 8,9, and 11 am all showed up at the same time and there was no priority. Got my day off to a rush. I booked an economy car to save fuel and deal with narrow highland roads and told him that. He said he upgraded me to a Mini Cooper, I said cool. But it was a countryman. Very bulky and made the first few days a tough drive. I was then surprised to have a visa bill 3x my quote. They double charge for the insurance and had to deal with that over the phone. Thankfully all sorted and drop off was fine in Glasgow. They actually drove me back.

Car was not what I booked to hire, it was a cheaper downgraded car that I could have hired for £25 less. There was no option to change car or explanation why change of car. I drove past drop off area and saw lots of cars sitting there. Its Norwich, I wouldn't think were 15 bookings that weekend. Car shook when it went about 60mph so I don't think it was that safe and there was no form for me to fill out if there was an issue. Would not book again. I can see why their rating at Norwich Airport is so low.

Our experience with hertz was excellent. We landed in Gatwick and walked to Hertz from the airport which was not very far. The car was ready and we had an upgrade to an automatic and I think the car was a bit bigger too. So all in all we are very happy with our experience. The car was very economical it was a Toyota four door CR hybrid. Thank you kayak for organising this, can’t fault anything. Drop-off was very smooth, we arrived half an hour before we had to drop it off someone was there immediately to assess it and we were told there was zero problems so no extra charges. Wonderful service all in all.

Horrible. They tried to rip me off with a bait and switch. When I arrived they said I had zero insurance and the cost to add it was TWICE the amount of the reservation. For example, the reservation was for around $200 and they wanted to charge me $600. When I complained they said they could drop it to $500 but required a $3000+ deposit and were going to limit the amount of miles I could drive without a penalty. Luckily my bank blocked the charge and I walked out and had to go look for another company to take my business. Never again and I think Kayak should consider removing them from their roster of rental companies. What a horrible experience to be in a foreign country and being ripped off like that. It's taking advantage of someone and luckily I was able to have Avis help me out last minute.

Terrible experience due at least in part to your incomplete service. The company does not accept Amex, which was not mentioned in any of your documents. As I did not have any other card, they wanted to charge me 120 pounds for the service. I had to find another company, at a cost of around 70 pounds (Enterprise). Lost hours in the process. All because the terms and conditions in your booking were incomplete. I expect from you an apology and a full reimbursement of the cost I incurred. Pls let me know the procedure Thank you

Greenmotion failed to provide me with an hire car because they did not accept the accident and collision coverage provided by my Visa credit card. My credit card has always covered this insurance for more than 30 years of hiring cars provided I don't take out the hire car insurance. Two other people were not able to successfully hire a car from Greenmotion for other reasons, I think, also while I was there trying to solve the problem with them.

The gentleman who helped us at the counter was very kind however we had a reservation on a Sunday for a two week rental. Our flight was canceled from the states to Edinburgh and it delayed us one day. I emailed Green motion to advise them of the flight cancellation and next day pick up.They did tell me they would be able to reinstate my rental however they could not guarantee the car class which was economy. When we got to Green motion, they charged us an additional US$1000 for a full-size car when we were adamant we wanted the smallest car possible due to our unfamiliarity driving the narrow roads in opposite directions . They told us this was the only available vehicle however there were hundreds of smaller cars on the lot that day and they obviously could’ve made a price concession understanding that our flight was canceled. So a car rental that was originally meant to cost us $300 was $1300 plus the additional gas and stress on the roads Total rip off agents. Had we had time we would’ve simply found another rental car company to rent from that day however we were time crunched with our arrival having already been delayed a solid 24 hours. We really felt taken advantage of by this company and do not suggest renting from them or being steered by their low rates. Many other people were having issues at the rental counter which is also not convenient as it’s offsite from the airport. As mentioned the gentleman at the counter was very kind, but said his hands were tied due to management’s decision-making. Pass on green motion!

Wanted ford focus but got citreon c3. Had a square steering wheel that I didn’t like and the speed warning on it was rubbish so beeping a lot. It would be saying speed limit is 50 when it was motorway and 70. When I got home the street before mine is 30, the car said 60. Rubbish

I am asking KAYAK to contact me directly regarding this booking and investigate this with Avis. I booked an Avis vehicle through KAYAK / its booking partner for a specific rental period and at a confirmed price. Because of travel delays, I arrived approximately two hours after the scheduled pickup time. When I arrived at Avis Battersea, I was told that my reservation had been cancelled just 30 minutes after the scheduled pickup time. I have reviewed the terms and conditions that were presented with my booking. I cannot find anything stating that the reservation would automatically be cancelled after 30 minutes or that I would lose my confirmed rate if I arrived more than 30 minutes late. Avis’s own published UK guidance also does not appear to support what I was told at the location. Their FAQ says customers should call if they expect to be more than half an hour late — it does not say the reservation is cancelled after 30 minutes. A separate Avis FAQ states that, where a vehicle has already been allocated, it will generally be held for two hours after the rental start time. The most frustrating part is that Avis still had cars available when I arrived. They did not tell me they were sold out or unable to provide a vehicle. Instead, they refused to honour my existing reservation and said I could rent a car only by making a new booking at approximately three times the price I had already reserved. I also received no notification that my reservation had supposedly been cancelled. I fully accept that I arrived late. That is not the issue. The issue is that a significant 30-minute automatic cancellation rule was apparently applied to my booking even though I cannot find that rule disclosed anywhere in the terms I was provided. If I reserve a car from a specified start time until a specified return time, I expect that I am paying to reserve that rental capacity for that period. I understand that I do not get extra time at the end because I arrived late. What I do not understand is how the reservation can simply disappear 30 minutes after the start time, particularly when cars remain available, and I can then be asked to pay three times as much for essentially the same rental. That defeats the purpose of making a reservation in advance. I am particularly concerned because Avis has now directed me back to the third-party booking provider rather than explaining where this alleged 30-minute cancellation rule appears in the terms applicable to my booking. KAYAK: please contact me directly about this complaint. I would like KAYAK to review the terms that were displayed when I booked, confirm whether a 30-minute cancellation rule was disclosed anywhere in the booking flow, and raise this directly with Avis. I am seeking either a refund/reimbursement and appropriate resolution or a clear explanation showing exactly where, before purchase, I was informed that Avis could cancel my confirmed reservation after only 30 minutes and then require me to pay approximately three times the price despite still having vehicles available. I would appreciate a response from KAYAK rather than simply being redirected back to Avis.

The staff approach was generally non helpful. Verging on rude. That was while organizing the rental. When the vehicle was returned, there was no staff to greet and guide that all was good and where the bus, for return to terminal, was. I had to ask for guidance. This is a second rental in six months. I will only rent from them if I’m desperate. I recently rented from Alamo. The difference is like night and day

Very disappointing, I arrived at the planned time for pickup the car from the confirmed booking, they said their computer system was down and were not able to deliver any car. Our original car, Peugeot 2008 was mechanically faulty. The clutch broke and caused the car the inability to move 15/20 minutes after picking up the vehicle. Lots of smoke etc. We were on a motorway at the time, No verge so a dangerous area to stop, we called recovery and after an hour a tow truck was sent, We returned to our pick point and eventually were given a new vehicle, We are from overseas. This did cause some distress to me ( the driver). Also having to pay £65 to return the car to a different location a half hour away was I thought an unnecessary expense.

This is the worst company and would never recommend anyone to book from them. Firstly they forced me to buy collision insurance and didn't accept the coverage provided by my credit card. At the time of booking there was no such requirement and if it was mandatory it should have been told at the time of booking, considering that they are scamming people. Secondly, they don't record all the damages to car and ask renter to record video, I tried to show them few scratches and the guy said record video, later while returning one of the scratch was not clear in video and the guy seems excited to blame me for that scratch luckily I found another video on my phone in which those scratches were evident. Never rent from them and go for known brands. I have already raised complaint to priceline for refund of addition $200 that I had to pay at pick up but they are also not helpful though it is a mistake by both of them.

From start to finish zaine was Professional helpful and a great lad. I Wasn't expecting it to be as cheap as it was without hidden costs, but even the platinum insurance was resonable in comparrison to most Rental places I have visited (which is alot lately). 100% reccomend these guys!!

Staff is very rude and attempt to commit fraud. I bought the platinum protection package which protects you from liability in case of scratches or even totaling the car and they’re still try to withhold my deposit of $254. Worst people I’ve ever dealt with.

Negative: On arrival at Heathrow T4, despite what was on my booking from the broker (and what I have since confirmed is posted on the Surprice website), Surprice Heathrow pick-up only covered T2/T3/T5. This meant having to get a train with multiple bags which was very challenging for one person. My AMEX credit card was also not accepted (despite having already been used through the broker booking for part payment of the fee) Additionally, I was informed at the counter that I would need to pay extra to be dropped off at the airport on my departure Lastly, the car was dirty and had clearly not been cleaned. The agent offered to clean the car but I was now running late due to the unexpected trip from T4, etc so had to waive this offer Positive: On returning the car a few days later, I provided my poor experience to a gentleman called Sadan, who was handling the car check-in. He was very attentive and extremely customer focused. He apologised for the issues I had encountered and provided a complimentary drop off to the airport.

Has to pay over twice again for additional cover on the instance so I was not liable in the event of an accident. This should have been mentioned before booking. Car was lovely but smelt of smoke. Customer service at pick up was poor and took over an hour to collect. Drop off was better.

It was booked without the insurance that I required to drive away. I consequently had to pay an additional £85 on pickup in order to get the car. Thereby invalidating the claimed price. Since kayak, booked through Expedia, which booked through routes, which actually just booked through europcar, no one there had any idea why they let the booking happen at all. Surely this is a problem. Can I have my money back for false advertising? Cheers

I was charged by routes, on arrival to pick up Europcar explained there was no insurance . I contacted routes and the member of staff was rude and unhelpful. I couldn’t cancel or amend the hire, needed a car and had to rebook directly with Europcar who were very helpful. So had to pay twice for the vehicle. I have tried to contact Routes for a refund without success.

The car was great. The service was terrible. It took two hours to actually get the car, even though I had reserved it and prepaid. Misleading information about the airport shuttle - the shuttle doesn’t go to the airport and the office was very sketchy and in an area without good transportation options. I have been charged an exorbitant amount for a scratch which may have existed before I rented the car. All in all, a horrible experience.

It seems they are running an Insurance scam They don’t accept the address on American drivers license as a proof of address If you don’t take insurance then they create a damage on arrival and forfeit your deposit of upto 1500 Pounds Saying they will help by giving paper work to recover the amount from insurance the customer has This matter should be reported to proper arthritis and Kayak should not sell their cars any more

Kayak should remove this AddCar branch. It's not an airport rental. The rentals are in an off airport building 30 minutes away by taxi from London Heathrow airport. There is no "shuttle" to go to the building from the airport. The "car-rental-square" company has many logos including addCar. It's a scam.

York Car Rental is a fraud that Kayak is supporting. They didn't have any cars. We arrived, waited for hours, and then had to rent from another rental company at the last minute. We ended up paying 300% of the original value we were supposed to pay. Do not fall for this scam.

Kayak sold me an insurance package that was not accepted by the rental company. The rental company requires police proof that you have insurance with full loss coverage of meer than 35000 pounds. Without it you are forced to buy their insurance package which doubled the cost of the rental. Would not recommend.

Absolutely the worst experience I’ve ever had in renting a car. Arrived in the cold morning, front desk said we had to walk across the parking lot in the freezing cold with a baby to speak to someone. That person told us to wait outside in the cold with a baby until a manager arrived. After 30 min we were told that no manager was coming and that they had no car for us. They offered no solution and had no compassion. They said that they knew they didn’t have a car the day before and didn’t call of notify us in any way. Absolutely despicable.
