Fukuoka is the capital city of the Fukuoka prefecture on the Japanese island of Kyushu. While the city has good public transport, if you are travelling in a group, car hire in Fukuoka will probably be more economical than buying multiple public transport tickets. Having a car will also enable you to explore more of the countryside of the prefecture and island, where public transport options can be few and far between.
Car hire in Fukuoka can be obtained from the airport and is easily accessible. You’ll find all the car hire kiosks on the first floor of the international terminal. It might be a good idea to compare prices through KAYAK and book ahead of time, to make the process easier upon arrival. Be sure to have your passport, your licence from your country as well as an international licence on hand to make the procedure go smoothly.
In Japan in general, you drive on the left and the steering wheel is on the right. Watch out for motorcycles, as they are allowed to pass on your left. On highways, the rule is to keep left, pass right. You aren’t allowed to turn on a red signal. Signage looks different to many other countries, so it might be a good idea to familiarise yourself with these before you drive. You can find all the signage online to see the equivalent in your country.
Car hire in Fukuoka doesn't need to be scary. The roads can be quite complicated, but if you get a satellite navigation system when you hire the car, it will help a lot. Many streets are narrow, so it might be better to book a smaller car. Watch out for pedestrians and cyclists as there is usually a lot of foot traffic in the city. Peak traffic times are 08:00-09:00 and after 17:00 on weekdays, so try to avoid driving at these times.
Hire a car during your stay in Fukuoka to explore various city attractions and environs. A hire car allows you to drive affordably to tourist locations like Ohori Park and Kushida-Jinja Shrine. Opting for cheap car hire in Fukuoka will allow you to drive to Itoshima, a closely guarded secret location for many Fukuoka locals, roughly 27 km from Fukuoka. In less than 1 hour, you can drive to this sunny peninsula with sandy beaches, a busy surf scene and ideal spots for epic hikes. Some Fukuoka car hire companies offer add-ons, like extra insurance protection, GPS devices and additional drivers.
For you to book cheap car hire in Fukuoka, you need to be at least 18 years old and be in possession of a Japanese driver's licence or an International Driving Permit (IDP) under the 1949 Convention on International Road Traffic. Customers from countries that do not offer an IDP can obtain an official translation from the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF), through Driving-Japan or from their country’s embassy or consulate. Additionally, you must present a major credit card in your name at the time of hire, and international customers must provide their passports as well.

Fukuoka has charging stations at Virage Hakata Station, the Grand Dome Fukuoka, Konoha Mall Hashimoto, Lacreis Nishijin Residential Tower and Fukuoka City Hall Government Building 1F. Alternatively, you can book your stay in a hotel with EV car charging stations, like Sun Business Hotel, Kurume Washington Hotel Plaza, Nansuikaku and Hotel Okura Fukuoka. We had a time limit for the airplane check-in. And the worker understood the situation and he picked up our family drived my rentacar to go to the airport. Plus, I missed passport covers and he brought them back with happy smile. It was so scary situation but wonderful experience at the same time because of his sincere effort. Thanks RAKURAKU. I cannot forget their good support!! Thanks!!
In fact, I expected to have the latest model of Prius which I booked originally, but I was being given a Honda FIT instead and with a high mileage of 77092 km !

+ Perfect for the service! The persons at the desk were nice and helfull during the rental and the return. The car was working well. No problem fot that. - What has been not pleasant was the incapacity to rent a car near Hakata Station because there was no car left. Too much demand. So we had to search by ourselves another rental office. The people in the offices near Hakata Station did not have the time to guide us for that. Or did not want to. We finally found a rental place near Tenjin Station. - We did not get a final receit for the price of the car at the return. I ask for, but the person told me it was not possible... We just had a receit for the assurance added to the price of the rental. It would have been nice to provide a complete receit at the return of the car. Thank you!

Some Fukuoka car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Fukuoka.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Fukuoka car hire.
