Cons: We booked and needed customer service to revise the booking but could not reach anyone. Consequently, we canceled the reservation and booked with Enterprise. That may have been going from fire pan to fire, but that is a tale for another time.

Pros: The car was very nice and got great gas-mileage. The drop off was very easy.Cons: The pick up took a little too much time. There were other charges that were not included on our initial rental when we booked online, including an excessive insurance coverage that supposedly allowed us to enter into Bosnia (while visiting croatia), however there was no payment necessary when we crossed the border - they didn't even ask for car information. This should have been disclosed ahead of time, and should have been better explained if this was required or suggested.

Cons: We were given a price online that we paid in advance which we were led to believe was the total cost, including insurance. Upon picking up the car, we had to pay more than twice what we had already paid.

Pros: The desk staff in Dubrovnik was fantastic and very helpful

Pros: The agent who helped us did an excellent job. Her name was Dragana. She convinced me to pay extra for the insurance and upgraded vehicle, when I don’t think I have ever done that before. She also was very helpful with providing some recommendations for places to visit during our stay in Croatia.Cons: Everything went smoothly and for my first time renting with Sixt, I had a very pleasant experience.

Pros: Everything was good on the rental side - could have given us the drop off address - it was at a different airport. And we went to the wrong location first.Cons: The current drop-off location in Budapest is a very long walk to the terminal. It looks like it might be a temporary location as there was another lot under construction that we walk through. I think there should have been a shuttle.

Cons: I did not buy insurance from them and they ripped me off by saying I damaged a wheel rim, which I did not. When I returned the car, the guy went right to the rim....

Pros: Our rental was good, got excellent gas mileage. The staff was very helpful and friendly and very effiecent.Cons: When booking on Kayak it offered a specific car insurance for this rental. This insurance was not accepted by Sixt rental car. It was not Sixt rental car fault at all, Kayak needs to be more clear about the insurance coverage and explain that the rental car agency does not accept outside insurance.

Pros: Car was ok - new and clean. It has nav (however couldn't find "dubrovnik airport" with en settings), enough space for 5 people and luggage, Very fast dropoff, little longer pickupCons: Additional costs not mentioned during booking: for using the car in other countries and using ferry;

Sixt Agents Are Scam ArtistsPros: Car was fine.Cons: At the Dubrovnik location, the agent was very rude and condescending. He added fees to my booking for taking the car on the ferry and for driving 10 minutes through Bosnia, (which is a necessity when driving north in Croatia). I fought with him to remove the fees, which would have added $85 to my already-overpriced rental. He finally agreed, but not before trying to scare me about damage from the ferry or during the ten minute drive through Bosnia. Then, when I returned the car in Zagreb, the scam artists added notes to my final invoice, saying that the car was “severely soiled”. This was total BS, since the exterior of the car was clean, and we had cleaned out the car prior to returning it. I now have to call them and fight the additional charge that they will undoubtably add for the normal cleaning that they do before re-renting.
Pros: Quick service and dopoffCons: I ordered e class through Kayak and received c class instead which is lower class. Due to Covid i had to change dropoff zone which was out of my control and have not heard from hertz or kayak after complaining

Cons: Giving back was an unacceptable procedure: no contact person, no designated parking slot for car, was informed that I would have to park it in a public parking slot but none was free...

Croatian RoadtripPros: I liked how it was overall quite affordable. Hertz also had luxury saloons available. Unlimited kilometresCons: Last minute “necessary insurance” that clerk seemed to sell us. The car was dirty.

Bad customer service but good valuePros: Car was comfortable and the price was right.Cons: If you want to spend an hour and a half at a Hertz, this is the place for you. Staff was late to open the office and everyone was gone when we tried to return the car. They said it would take 10-15 minutes because they were “at the car wash”, but it was 25 minutes later before all 3 employees came back.
Cons: The office was not open when we returned it. I have yet to hear back from them verifying that everything is OK and what the final charges are

Very bad experience with AvisPros: We booked a car with Avis in Dubrovnik 2 days before the day we were starting our trip. But when we got there, there were no car waiting for us. Then they told that they had a partner company (MACK) and we could rent a car with them and return to Avis in Venice ( our last city). I asked specifically to return the car in Mestre-Venice, where I booked my hotel. But when I arrived in Mestre, the mananger just said yhat it was not a car from Avis and "that is not his problem". That I should call Dubrovnik to answer my problem. Finally after more discussion, he said me to go to Avis in airport and they could help me. He was very impolite and not even tried to help me. I'm sure I will never use Avis again.Cons: As told before

Pros: the cars were clean and the queues at the counters reasonableCons: the first car was a Peugeot 208 with automatic gearbox, which clutch was quite out of order (impossible to climb !) ; then I had a tire puncture and the spare wheel was also flat ! The different numbers of the Avis agency in Croatia (Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar) didn't answer, even it it was in the week and in the middle of the afternoon, so I was obliged to call the roadside assistancve to my expenses (including a new tire), on cash. After that I changed the car in Split but to a smaller one (smart for4) but at the same price (!) I received the assurance from Avis that my additional expenses (due to the puncture) will be decreased from my final bill, but when I gave back the car (in Zadar) that was impossible, but they told me that I will anyway receive the reimbursement in the next days. Wait and see
Pros: The car was clean and confortable. The check-in want well, minus the 55 euro.Cons: There was no one at the Drop-off. We waited 30 minutes, called twice and just decided to left the car in front of the store front with the keys in the trunk. We didn't speak to anyone. They also made us pay 55 euro to cross the bosnia border. We asked a local tourist agency if it was normal and they told us it is include in the price of the rental. We've been scam of 55 euro.

Cons: The gearbox of the car could have been smoother and the steering wheel adjustable. Otherwise the car was fuel efficient and met our space requirements
Explore the scenic coastline, the countryside of Croatia or the many attractions like the Dubrovnik Cathedral, which offers a view of the iconic rooftops of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Which better way to see all of this and more than with the convenience and flexibility of your own hire car?
Dubrovnik Airport is over 12 miles from the city center, so pick up a car upon your arrival to start your time in Dubrovnik hassle-free. There is a car hire center at the airport that includes agencies like Sixt or Europcar that offer vehicles in all shapes and sizes. Signs indicate the way out of the airport and the scenic D8 is the fastest road to Dubrovnik center, running alongside the coast and offering spectacular views during the ride.
Driving in Dubrovnik bears the usual challenges that come with most cities. Parking spots are rare and there are many one-way roads, making navigating a tad more difficult. Rent a satnav with your hire car to make maneuvering through the streets much easier. Driving in the Old Town is not permitted except for residents and emergency vehicles, so steer clear of that area. It is generally best to park the car in the outskirts of the city and walk inside or take the bus, as Dubrovnik is better explored on foot.
In the whole of Croatia, it is required to leave the headlights on day and night. It is also strictly forbidden to turn right at an intersection when the light is red, and there can be severe fines for talking on the phone while driving. At intersections without traffic lights, right of way belongs to the car coming from the right, except when there is a “yield” sign (an upside down triangle) for the right side street.

All speed limits are given in km/h in Croatia and are indicated with posted signs on the right side of the road. General restrictions dictate 50 km/h (31 mph) inside the city, 80 km/h (49 mph) outside built-up areas, and 110 km/h (68 mph) on main and rural roads. Parking spaces are metered outside the city walls (driving inside the walls is not permitted), and tickets need to be bought with the exact amount of coins. Alternatively, tickets can also be issued by the hotel reception, corner shops, or with your mobile phone. Rates depend on the parking zone, so check on the signs for which zone you are in. There are also parking garages available like the Ilijina Glavica or the free parking lot in Babin Kuk, from which a bus takes 20 minutes to get to the Old Town.
