I had a reservation at 11am. I was late getting into town and arrived around 12:30. The guy told me that my reservation was at 7am even though I showed my confirmation email that said 11am and he said they didn’t have a car for me. They didn’t even then suggest that there was an enterprise next door I walked there after looking it up myself and rented a car there instead.

The car was good and workedFinding the place, knowing the insurance cost upfront. Knowing the deposit amount upfront.

It was a nice car. There is a $100usd non-negitiable “basic insurance” charge that I was not told about before renting the vehicle. Instead of $75 for my rental, I had to pay $175. That was rather upsetting.

Learn SpanishEveryone was very nice, but because I don't speak Spanish and there were no English speakers there and the forms were in Spanish.....you get the idea.I had to pay for an entire extra day because I didn't understand what I was being told. Really my fault because I was ina Spanish speaking country. However, they did say on the phone that there was an English speaker available.

Lots of Extra Fees - bait and switchMexico has a long way to go in meeting US standards, even for US brands. No matter what you call to confirm, the extras accumulate. We reserved and PAID for a larger, newer Jeep SUV. We got a smaller, dirty, dented, old Nissan SUV. Despite calling ahead and confirming the details, they told us that despite my PLATINUM Mexican insurance, I would have to give a $15,000 USD deposit if I didn't purchase their third party insurance, billed separately, for 100% of the cost of my rental - doubling my cost. Additionally, they wanted a $1000 USD deposit - which i talked them down to $350 - also unplanned. And on return, they found about 10 hairs in the car where a dog sat on my lap for a few minutes outside my house. That was a $50 charge. Keep in mind that in Mexico, a premium car wash at a modern facility is $3-5 tops. I asked them for a brush and they refused. We then argued about the mileage, which was unlimited - he slipped a gas charge on that i had removed - since i returned the tank at 100% - filled just outside the location. Then he tried to charge for every scratch he found - which was all found on the pre rental check. It was a 30 minute return of arguing and gauging - very unpleasant and of course, you're in a rush to catch your flight.. Then he tried to tell me the charges were in USD and gave me an absurd exchange rate - 15.5 instead of 17. The rate is always in pesos - with your bank doing the conversion - so he would have reconverted back to pesos anyway. Very, very disappointing.

No point in having a reservation, terrible customer service.Despite an overall terrible experience, the car was clean and one person was kind enough to drive us to the border after we were dropped off at no additional cost. What an awful experience. I made a reservation for a vehicle 4 months in advance. My party included 5 people so I reserved an SUV that could fit all of us and our luggage. When arrived, Payless didn't have any cars for me, and wouldn't all day despite having a reservation. They sent us to another Payless location closer to the airport, which we had to pay for via taxi. That location didn't have any SUVs or bigger vehicles, and wouldn't for hours. We ended up renting a sedan that was too small but we could cram into. I urged them that I should be charged less since renting an SUV is more expensive, and they of course refused. Lastly, I was quoted 1/3 of what the total came out to. It would haven been cheaper for me to rent from San Diego and drive across the border. That is definitely what I would do in the future.

Only the car. When I made the reservation it said protection was included, but at the pick up time, they charge me an additional cost for insurance at almost the price of my three day rental. It was 70 dlls more than the 28 for the rental price. Please notify this before when you announce a price.

Poor tire condition and charge for tiny scratch. They charged me for a suppose scratch smaller than a the size of nail that I did not made. Also rented me a car with tires in very poor condition and I had to replace the car as the wires from the tires could already be seen from its wear.

OK car rental experienceThe car was clean and it got us from Tijuana to Loreto safely. This was my first time using Thrifty to rent a car. They wouldn't be my first choice in the future, though the workers at the store were nice the car wasn't great. It didn't do well with any road that wasn't in perfect condition so the car ride was bumpy and loud. In addition the car didn't do well on gas. The bathroom facilities at Thrifty were disgusting as the toilet didn't work (left over bathroom waste was left in the toilet) and there was no running water or hand sanitizer so I'm not sure how coworkers washed their hands.

nothingI arrived at the airport...the flight was 2 hours late, hertz was supposed to be open 24 hours--they weren't. I had to pay for an Uber from the airport to the hotel, back to the airport in the morning (same cost as 2 days of my rental) then they only had subcompact cars when I had reserved a full sized car....so I cancelled. worst car rental experience of my life. (it really sucked to be at an airport at 130am in the morning and not have your transportation waiting for you)

I ordered a Audi or similar car to pick up yesterday. When I got to pick it up they don’t have anything similar to an Aldie and they try to give me a Nissan. I asked if they had anything closer and the closest was a Volkswagen. We spent probably 30 minutes going back-and-forth inside before finally getting out to the cars in the lot. Once we got to the lot, they again try to give me a Nissan. I had to tell them no, we agreed on a Volkswagen. Finally we left with a super basic model Volkswagen instead of the premium Audi that I selected and paid for. I would like a refund for this reservation please.

not muchpick up & drop off there is no booth just some hertz guys working out of a car trunk in the parking lot hard to find as there is little to no signage at the transaction kiosk the directions they provided was> go out the door cross the street and into the in the parking lot 24,000km on the car it smelled and was poor suspension - shaky ride on the streets and highway

Location of car pick-up was different than advertised. Lots of hidden fees. Inefficient pick-up/drop-off process (long wait and processing times). Although we didn't have high expectations for the economy model car we rented, the brakes and steering we're pretty sketchy.

Car hire excess insurance in Tijuana

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) & Theft Protection Waiver

Collision damage waiver and theft protection are insurance options that cover renters from paying high penalty fees if the car is stolen or returned damaged. Some Tijuana car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the rental price but not all of them. We recommend always be aware of your coverage when renting a car in in Tijuana.

Deductible

Keep in mind that car hire excess insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your rental. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a no-deductible option to your Tijuana car rental.

Top tips for renting a car in Tijuana

  • Just along the United States-Mexico border, Tijuana is the perfect place to explore with a hire car. Ditch the unreliable public transportation and drive around the city at your own pace. Not only that, you can also head south along the Baja California peninsula for some stunning views, including a chance to see the whales in Guerrero Negro.
  • You’ll find that most of the major hire car agencies operate at Tijuana International Airport (TIJ), also known as General Abelardo L. Rodríguez, including Hertz and Enterprise. The car hire desks are situated in the Arrivals Hall of the airport’s terminal. You’ll need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Mexico, as well as insurance.
  • While Tijuana isn’t hard to navigate, a GPS always comes in handy. Because of its warm temperatures, the city sees a rise in tourism in April as well as in August, so beware that Tijuana will be more crowded during those seasons. Avenida Revolucion is the main avenue, so avoid driving there if you want to skip the crowds, and simply explore the area on foot instead.
  • Rush hour traffic in Tijuana is heavily influenced by its location near the border. If you want to cross into, or out of, the United States, avoid Friday and Sunday evenings as you will likely encounter heavy traffic jams. Evening rush hour traffic, starting from 5 p.m., can result in heavy congestion along the 5 and 805.

If you’re with a group of friends or family, a van is a good option.

  • The speed limit in urban areas is typically 60 km/h (37 mph), unless otherwise posted.
