Excellent 10.0
Pros: Wonderful hosts. Exceptional breakfast in a very pleasant atmosphere. No awkward silence just friendly chat between guests and hosts. Can't fault the property or the people. Loved it.
Cons: Nothing
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Location a short walk (under a Mile) to the centre of Kirkwall. We didn’t have a sea view room but can imagine the ones that do are nice. Bedroom clean Some nice sweet treats left for us on our last day. Some unusual breakfast options - haggis & poached eggs very tasty.
Cons: We were in a room that can be used for disabled guests and had a wet room, this resulted in the Bathroom floor been wet for Quite a while after a shower. Mirror too high in the bathroom for anyone under 5ft 6ins.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Best Scrambled eggs I have ever had, wonderful view from our room and very peaceful

Pros: Every thing was perfect at this hotel doing north coast 500 with a detour to Kirkwall out of our 11 night tour this was defiantly the best. The Host was very friendly and breakfast was also very good.

Pros: Lovely room (No 2), comfortable bed, excellent shower room, friendly host (Albert). Very good breakfasts too, with plenty of choice. Nice quiet location, although a bit of a walk, maybe a mile, partly uphill, from the centre of Kirkwall. Free parking on site. We would definitely stay here again if returning to Orkney.

Excellent 9.0
Pros: Great room with lovely view
Cons: Nothing
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Great room - large family suite with two bedrooms, lounge and kitchenette over two floors. All mod cons and fast Wi-Fi. Handy from ferry from Gibbs Bay - only 10min to terminal. Food was good and reasonable price.
Cons: Found the manager a little surly - also had not made restaurant booking that had been confirmed in email (but did manage to accommodate us, to be fair.)
Excellent 9.0
Pros: The breakast was great adn evening meal excellent. Nice and clean and comfortable.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: A lovely clean small hotel. Well run. Good food. All sea facing rooms. Our room was very comfortable. Nice staff who were very hard working. A nice bar too.
Cons: It was all good.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Beautiful location . Fresh and spotless
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Spotlessly clean and comfortable, friendly staff, good sea view and exceptional food.
Excellent 9.6
Pros: Quietness, vert good food, nice and helpful staff
Cons: You need to have a car to get there. Public transportation is possible every hour. In order to get to Burwick to catch the ferry, we paid 40 pounds for a taxi. For a 10 mile drive it was a real rip off. I am not sure we'll come back to the Orkneys because of that.

Excellent 9.0
Pros: It was full of character, enhanced by brilliant, unique, artwork
Cons: I’m not a fan of electric showers
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Good cooked breakfast, good coffee, friendly accommodating staff, fridge in room.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Friendly atmosphere very attentive host excellent breakfasts and very knowledgable about the islands
Cons: Nothing
Excellent 8.0
Pros: fantastic breakfast, lovely staff, very warm, comfy rooms and it had real charm. lovely position beside highland park distillery, and just a short downhill stroll to town, though, i cant deny, i got a taxi up the hill after dinner. really enjoyed my stay here.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: The breakfast was cooked to order, very well presented and was excellent.
Cons: Nothing
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Highland Park House was a beautiful, old house, lovingly restored and immaculate. Every effort had been made to ensure comfort, and attention to detail was extreme. Breakfasts were a delicious delight, and the owners were wonderful hosts.
Cons: It was unfortunate that we were unable to have a television in the room due to very poor signal, but there was a designated sitting room which was very pleasant. Although the location was not central, and too far to walk comfortably into Kirkwall centre, it wasn’t too inconvenient, and had a very good restaurant in a hotel moments away.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: The traditional Scottish breakfast was delightful, especially the haggis with chilli jam.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: The level of cleanliness was exceptional , breakfast was plentiful and really tasty, high quality produce. The hosts were wonderful, the hotel decorated in a very arty style , comfortable, cosy. They would go any lengths to be helpful . We had a wonderful experience, we will return .
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Highland Park House has so much charm; full of original artwork, stained-glass lights, heritage colours on the walls, also a delightful music-room, all so tasteful and very comfortable. The peaceful location ensures a great night's sleep. Breakfast was huge and perfectly cooked. The owners are lovely ; very warm and friendly. We will definitely be back!
Cons: Nothing!

Poor 1.0
Cons: - There are too many rules. For example, 5 pounds penalty for this and 10 pounds penalty for that. After checking out, nobody is allowed to stay in common areas. You will be charged for this and that if you do .... etc. For your information, now Scotland is in zero level and a lot of the restriction has been eased except face mask. - I paid 92 pounds per night. It was all self-serviced and you didn't see any staff. They left an envelope with your room key on table and you dropped the key to a box when leaving. - For 92 pounds per night, your room is just a room with 4 bunk beds. The gap between the upper and lower bunk beds is just about 50 cm. I have never seen such a small gap in bunk beds in other hostels before. It doesn't fit even a child. - A spider was found in the shower room. - Most of the ferries arrive Kirkwall from Aberdeen or Lerwick at around 23:00 at night. The buses from the ferry terminal don't pass the street of the Orcades hostel. If you are not driving, it is difficult to find the hostel in the dark. - I don't recommend anyone to stay in Orcades Hostel which was a horrible experience.
Good 7.0
Pros: We stayed during covid restrictions so no kitchen and no lounge. Although the warden was very helpful and had placed a mini fridge and a crockery in our room it was not the usual hostel experience and therefore poorer value than usual.
Cons: No cooking facilities available due to pandemic.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: The hostel was fantastic for location and facilities the staff were very friendly and the whole place was spotless. the location was within easy walking distance of the town centre and there was off road parking.
Cons: Not being able to cook meals however Covid put a stop to that not the hostel. We were provided with a small fridge and crockery and utensils
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Really clean and tidy . Fridge in room came in really handy . I
Cons: No
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Location great and all facilities that I used were great. Lounges closed due to COVID-19 and saw no staff for the same reason. Which made the organisation and high scores even more impressive.
Cons: Could have used a bike rack. No garden.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Very clean and room was great . Hot shower mini fridge in room . Great location
Cons: Kitchen closed due to restrictions cant be helped. Very impersonal no meeting with owners think bit extreme and takes away from hostel feel. Other places working harder as things open up. Microwave in room would be helpful at the moment

Excellent 8.0
Pros: Super friendly. Great location. Great dinner. Helpful staff. Fab accommodation
Cons: Having to walk up 3 flights of stairs with luggage. Hot breakfast left uncovered first morning
Excellent 8.0
Pros: I thought it was quite expensive (£150) for one night - smallish room. This did not include breakfast.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: The breakfast was good. The staff were always helpful. Parking was always available.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: All good except as noted below
Cons: The breakfast room & restaurant were not well ventilated - particularly the breakfast room, which was compounded by the flame heaters under the hot food pans - I wouldn't have thought naked flames is a good idea in case someone bumps into the tables and knocks one over.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: The breakfast was amazing value for money
Cons: Nothing loved It all
Good 7.0
Pros: Location, staff, cleanliness, accordion band
Cons: Breakfast appeared to have been lying for a while and was quite tough. Bacon was also very salty and limited staff to direct you within breakfast room
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Staff are warm and welcoming making sure you have a great stay. Food is fantastic

Excellent 10.0
Pros: The Shore has been bought over by The Kirkwall Hotel and we were upgraded in to one of their newly refurbished rooms. The room was lovely with a great shower and comfortable bed. The restaurant is a really pleasant place to dine, but they really need a vegan menu, the choices are very limited. The vegan breakfast options could be improved too. The staff are really great, the young man on the front desk couldn’t have been more helpful. We really enjoyed our stay and would book again.
Cons: Lack of fruit and vegan options at breakfast.
Mediocre 2.0
Pros: Nothing
Cons: The hotel is now an annex of the Kirkwall Hotel with no restaurant or bar. There is no lift and if you are in the attic rooms they are tiny with only a view of the sky or a wall. Stayed one night and then moved to the Kirkwall Hotel main building. Would not recommend
Good 7.0
Pros: Was a big room so enough room to move about.
Cons: Asked for twin beds but got a king size bed. Two rooms were booked instead of one. Had to go up 3 sets of stairs with our luggage and a dog. Receptionist asked how I wanted to pay but I had already paid it through booking.com.
Good 7.0
Pros: Location & breakfast
Cons: Noisy bedroom opposite hatbour
Excellent 8.0
Pros: The Kirkwall next door where we had our meals is a fantastic hotel with great food. Our property the Shore needs a facelift and then it could be a wonderful hotel. Bed was large and comfortable and room was very clean.
Cons: Looks like major work about to be carried out which is much needed. Temperamental electric shower was main problem and no curtains.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Staff were excellent. Very helpful. Breakfast was served in nearby hotel (recent takeover) and was excellent too. Access to a sitting room would have been a bonus.
Cons: Because of COVID, no cleaning of the rooms. We could request clean towels, toilet rolls etc. but I felt we could have been given clean sheets and bathroom wipes for our 10 day stay. Coffee etc available on request but not biscuits
Mediocre 2.0
Pros: It’s closed No bar or reception or restaurant
Cons: See above
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Clean and hotel service excellent.
Cons: Under present circumstances we were very fortunate to secure the suite requested .

Excellent 9.0
Pros: Lovely location and great facilities, house was well equipped and spotlessly clean
Cons: Nothing
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Excellent Bed. Well kitted out. Clean and Tidy.
Cons: Toilet seat needs adjustment. Could do with a second saucepan.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Location and easy booking in and out.
Cons: Could have done with a light outside for early ferry starts each morning. Occasionally next door made some noise disturbing the peace.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Wonderful welcome from the lovely Laura, even when we arrived in the late evening! The property is also well equipped, copious hot water for great showers, and (for us, not wanting to be in a town) in a perfect location for exploring the islands - including out to Hoy and Rousay.
Cons: Linen and all soft furnishings could do with an upgrade, but we understand that this is a relatively new self-catering operation, so hopefully the owners will reinvest in the next year or so.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Aviedale Suite is in a quiet location ideal for getting round the island to visit the attractions. The accommodation is ideal for a few days stay but a little limited for longer stays.
Cons: A view of the coast would have been a bonus.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Self-contained little cottage in a very pretty and quite remote area of Orkney. Everything was very efficient, check-in very smooth, everything worked well. We loved our week on Orkney, which has fascinating history and amazing scenery.
Cons: Everything was fine - exactly as advertised
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Very clean, very comfortable bedroom.
Cons: A small welcome pack( e.g.milk ) would have been good as there were no shops close by.

Excellent 8.0
Pros: Very central location, 3 free parking spaces at the front door. Traditional building decorated in a traditional style. Breakfast and dinner were both decent quality and quantity. Helpful and friendly staff.
Cons: Only issue we had was the flush mechanism in our toilet was a little temperamental. We always got a space but imagine in busier times it would be difficult to park close to the hotel. Breakfast room needed some TLC to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the hotel
Excellent 10.0
Pros: The staff where excellent, really nice & friendly.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Friendly staff, good food and a really good comfortable bed, great
Cons: Nothing to dislike.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Very friendly staff, and central hotel with easy access from a late arrival off the ferry. Historic building.
Cons: Rooms a little dated.

Okay 4.0
Pros: The staff were very nice and the breakfast was good too. We had a problem with the room we were allocated and we were given an alternative room.
Cons: The room we were allocated was very cold and smelt of damp, just did not feel welcoming at all. The outside of the hotel is quite nice but the inside is quite tired and dated.
Good 7.0
Pros: Friendly staff, fabulous breakfast.
Cons: The pillows were not great but I guess that’s a personal preference.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: The location was excellent, 5 minutes walk to shops etc. Breakfast was very satisfactory and good choice. Staff very pleasant and friendly. As no daily room cleaning, toiletries and tea, coffee left at reception to help yourself.
Good 6.0
Pros: Breakfast very good. Location reasonable
Cons: Bar was not open due to Covid restrictions
Good 7.0
Pros: Very friendly greeting on arrival. Good service at breakfast. Comfortable bed, quiet location.
Cons: Room quite small with not much storage space. Perfectly OK for 1 or 2 nights.
Good 6.0
Pros: Staff were lovely. Breakfast was very good and cooked to order. The rooms were clean.
Cons: Rooms were very dated. Wash hand basin in one of the bedrooms, which we haven't seen since the 70's! Shower in one room was very very poor.
Okay 4.0
Pros: Location. Friendly staff
Cons: Room dated. Unable to see tv screen properly.
Excellent 9.0
Pros: Angela was very helpful in giving me information about the hotel and area beforehand. She suggested places to eat and booked a table for me for in the evening. The other staff were friendly and helpful too.
Cons: Nothinf

Excellent 9.6
Pros: Staff are nice and very helpful. I love their huge kitchen. There are so many kitchenware for the guests and large space for storage. Of course, the hostel is very clean. They have two washing machines and two dryers. The guests can use them between 1700-0800 because the laundry room is far away from the rooms!
Cons: I stayed 5 nights in this hostel. The location is not bad but you have to walk from the tourist office or Tesco. I suggest you can take off the bus at Tesco and buy some food before going back the hostel. Because of the weather, there was some problem of WiFi signals. Although there are some disadvantage, I still love this place. :-D
Okay 5.4
Pros: The staff were very lovely. Some very lovely guests too. Many of whom were in the same state of shock as I at the place! Sorry! Love YHA but this hostel is desperately in need of TLC and a little bit of personality. Great value but take extra blankets. Parking.
Cons: No heating on the night we stayed No warning that hot water takes forever to warm up Uncomfortable bed - springs poking us! Room smelt like men’s urinal plus detoll to cover it up! Broken toilets - some very malodorous No toilet roll/soap One of those places where you don’t want to touch door handles or walk barefoot!
Good 7.5
Pros: Absolutely good price for its value. Really nice staff! Good location for exploring the city and island. Very quiet and warm. I would come again!
Cons: very old carpets! no breakfast available because it was out of season.
Good 7.9
Pros: I have booked a 14 bed room but when I came it was 2 bed room, witch was great. Bed was very comfortable and clean. Room was also very clean.
Cons: I sent two messages through booking and one by email, no one replied. I had urgent question because check in was until 22 and I came at 23:50. Nobody was there but I have found an envelope with my name on it. It would just be nicer if I had some info before arriving :)
Good 7.1
Pros: Staff was quick to resolve any problems.
Cons: Single room was double booked. Unable to use Bike Shed: locked. Needed to leave Bike outdoors not secured to railings etc
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Location is great - it's a short walk into the center of town and to the bus station.
Good 6.3
Pros: Clean and tidy,
Cons: Was very hard to find and staff were not answering calls... bit were apologetic when I eventually arrived

Excellent 10.0
Pros: The staff were so welcoming and helpful. We had dinner there which was very very good.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: This is a great hotel in the making. The guidebook was calling it the Queen of Orkneys and it was surely right. I loved the location, warm rooms, the reading room overlooking the harbour and the restaurant on top of all!
Cons: The room windows could be cleaner. It would improve the way the hotel feels extremely; particularly on a cold and dark day.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Room was well equipped, and had enough room for what we needed. The sea view was nice.
Cons: too much noise from the pub and taxi rank
Good 7.0
Pros: Location fantastic, dog friendly and new decor is great.
Cons: Young Hamish was pretty abrupt when I asked about a late checkout. All other staff were lovely and very accommodating.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Ours was a newly refurbished room, tastefully done and comfortable with a sea view. Staff friendly and helpful. We were able to bring our dog along too. Restaurant and bar beautifully decorated and food was good.
Cons: No real negatives. Hotel is undergoing refurbishment so looks a little unfinished in places. Bathroom might benefit from extractor fan.
Good 6.0
Pros: Location opposite the harbour - note the Aberdeen/Lerwick ferry arrivals on a pier about a five minute drive down the bay.
Cons: The room was new decorated and refurbished to a high standard - however we were clearly the first guests and the room smelled strongly of gloss during the first night of the stay - the windows hadn’t even been left open. Heating was set too high which exaserpated the fumes and no water had been left in the room. The newly refurbished bathroom lacked any shelving for bits and pieces and the table lamp wasn’t working. The breakfast sausages and scrambled eggs were of poor quality and detracted from the breakfast experience but the restaurant staff were very efficient and accommodating. That being said, the room for future occupants will be well received and is decorated very tastefully.
Excellent 10.0
Pros: Everything
Cons: Nothing
Excellent 9.0
Pros: recently refurbished and much improved. Staff friendly and helpful, food good - breakfast and evening meal. Excellent location on Kirkwall waterfront.
Excellent 8.0
Pros: Food in the restaurant was amazing and the room was comfortable and furnished to a high quality, very lovely and helpful staff
