Whether you want to soak up the summer sun in a convertible or are staying in the heart of Malaga, a smaller car is advisable to travel around the narrower, older streets. However, if you want to take the rural roads to nearby villages, an SUV would be better suited to your journey.

When you drive around the center of Malaga, you will need to keep to the speed limit of 31 mph. If you take the motorway, or autopista, the limit is 74 mph, whereas on a dual carriageway, or autovia, the speed limit is 62 mph. The speed limit on Malaga’s main roads, or carreteras, is 55 mph, whilst signposts will show the speed limits on secondary and rural roads. It’s important to drive carefully in Malaga as there are several speeding radars across the city.

Even though free parking in the center of Malaga is limited, there are several places in and around the city where you can pay to park your hire car. You will be able to park in blue zones, where you will pay at a ticket machine, or you can opt for the municipal underground parking lot, where you can expect to pay between €25.00 and €30.00 a day (approximately $28.00-$34.00 USD). Plaza de Marina is the perfect place to park as it’s a large parking lot located in the historic center, under Malaga’s main shopping street.
