NO CAR despite reservation two months in advanceWe arrived to find they had NO CARS. They just said, "Sorry, due to the bank holiday there are no cars and there's nothing we can do. We tried to contact you yesterday, but couldn't call you due to American phone number." So, I got an email reminder from Budget about the reservation, but that wasn't used to tell us of a problem. Also, if they had known for over 24 hours, why didn't they get a car from Cardiff or somewhere? It's not that far away. And why had they lent out so many cars they couldn't cover reservations? When we arrived at the office, they hadn't even bothered to call other agencies for us, so when they did there were no cars at those agencies either. They made essential no effort to fix the problem that was entirely their fault. I have never encountered anything like this in years of renting cars and am blown away by the fact that they didn't have a car for us. Why bother to reserve one? In the end, our local friends had to borrow a car from some of their friends so we could get out to western Wales and our pre-paid, non-refundable cottage. It was an inconvenience all around, and if we didn't have local contacts our holiday would have been sunk.

Car hire excess insurance in Swansea

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) & Theft Protection Waiver

Collision damage waiver and theft protection are insurance options that cover renters from paying high penalty fees if the car is stolen or returned damaged. Some Swansea car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the rental price but not all of them. We recommend always be aware of your coverage when renting a car in in Swansea.

Deductible

Keep in mind that car hire excess insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your rental. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a no-deductible option to your Swansea car rental.

Top tips for renting a car in Swansea

  • The second largest city in Wales after Cardiff, Swansea occupies a spot along the west coast of Wales and overlooks the Bristol Channel. A car hire in Swansea allows you the mobility to freely explore the westernmost reaches of the landscape, where Pembrokeshire Coast National Park can be found 65 miles away via the A40. If that doesn’t quench your thirst, pick up the A487 north and discover the town of Aberystwyth a further 72 miles up the coastline.
  • Cardiff Airport (CWL) is some 30 miles from the city and if you need a car hire in Swansea, this is a good place to pick one up before heading to your accommodations. The Car Hire Centre at Cardiff Airport is located opposite the Short Stay Car Park about 10min from the main terminal building. There is an on-demand shuttle bus that makes the rounds, which you can catch at the bus stop near the train link shuttle just outside the terminal exit.
  • If you’re looking to escape the typical rush hour traffic, the A4087 coastal road is a great place to start. This major artery flows past the Swindon Marina and the Swindon Docks making it a lightning rod for tie-ups in the morning and evening. The A4118 and the B4489 are also major conduits flowing through the city centre, along which congestion is likely to occur. Anticipate a regular stream of foot traffic in addition to both types of cycle when driving around the downtown area.
  • Residents of coastal cities with active docks and marinas tend to have an early start to the day. That said, if there’s any gridlock along Swansea streets it’s more likely to exist during 07:00-08:00 when people are making their way to work or school. The Mount Pleasant district with its tight concentration of roads is also one to keep away from during the morning, as well as the evening rush period, which is generally busiest between 19:00-20:00.

  • There is a 20mph speed limit along Swansea High Street and other districts within thriving commercial and institutional areas, but outside these precincts, the national speed limit of 30mph should be applied. On primary roads like the A4067 and A483, speeds of between 40mph and 50mph are allowed and if you make it out to the M4 the limit increases to 70mph. CCTV and traffic cameras are always in use along busy highways and at junctions, so drive with care and observe the stated limits whenever possible.

Esso and Texaco have a major presence in the area, but the supermarket chains are well represented as well, with about 8 locations from which to choose.

  • Swansea Council operates several parking schemes including on-street parking, city centre car parks inclusive of multi-storey facilities and recreational parking, to name a few. On-street parking is subject to limits on time (maximum 2h) and operates on a pay-and-display basis, where the rate is £0.50 per 30min interval. The tariffs at city centre parking garages vary according to location but typically range between £1.20 and £1.50 per hour, which is similar to those for recreational parking spots. Parking is free on Sundays and bank holidays on most public streets not subject to restrictions and is usually free Monday-Saturday between the hours of 21:00 and 08:00.
