Stay away from Sosua Bay Resort (aka the BellaMar
One redeeming quality of this hotel was the staff. They were helpful and kind. During lunch and dinner, the servers were kind and fairly fast with getting drinks.
Almost everything about this hotel is sketchy. For starters, you can tell this used to be a nice hotel, but it has fallen into disrepair. There WAS an ocean-level patio for getting sun and enjoying the water, but it has literally fallen into the ocean. You can go down there, but I wouldn't - if you slip and fall you are at the mercy of the powerful surf mashing you into the rocks (this is not an exaggeration). One of the guest houses is clearly abandoned, with broken windows and outdoor chairs piled into a corner. There WERE 3-4 bars in the pool area. Now only one functions; it's no surprise because there are so few guests that 4 bars would be overkill. There is hardly any shade around the pool deck. Considering how hot and strong the sun's rays are, it would be nice to have ANY umbrellas. Instead, there is one small cabanna (which people claimed via leaving their towels/belongings every day that I was there). My wife got sick after being there one day. This was after spending a week in Las Galeras and Santo Domingo, so we knew the drill (no ice or water not from a bottle). She got sick anyways. Nearby beach is quite crowded. My neighbor hired a prostitute. I know this because I could hear them "getting work done" while I tried to fall asleep. I know prostitution is common in the area, so I'm not sure if this is just this hotel or all hotels in Sosua. Seriously, stay away. This place is a sinking ship.
