With hot summer weather taking over the Northern Hemisphere, you won’t have to go far to find the best places to visit in June.

June heralds the start of the summer for most. However, it’s still early enough to avoid the full force of the peak tourist season. From the allure of beautiful architecture to the thrill of festivities, I’ve got heaps of suggestions on where to get away in June this year.

Best places to visit in June: Europe

Looking for the best places to go on holiday in June that are close to home? You’re in luck. This month, the weather warms up throughout Europe, making it the perfect time for a beach getaway or a balmy city break.

1. Brighton, UK

People hanging out on the pebbly beach at Brighton Pier.

A strong contender for the title of ‘coolest city in the UK’, Brighton is a very fun place to be throughout the year. It’s also definitely one of the best places to visit in the UK in June. Why? Because you’ll be able to explore its shops, shoreline and world-famous pier with fewer crowds.

The beaches might not be as sandy as those in the Mediterranean, but what Brighton more than makes up for is when it comes to shopping and restaurants. Additionally, it’s one of the most popular cities in the UK for a night out. This is thanks in no small part to the wonderful LGBTQ+ community that has helped make Brighton one of the friendliest and fun places to party in the country.

You could quite easily spend an entire day exploring The Lanes: Brighton’s signature shopping district. Browse boutique, antique, independent, and vintage stores filled with incredible items begging to be added to your wardrobe. Plus, there are also dozens of incredible restaurants and cafes to tempt your taste buds with.

2. Prague, Czech Republic

The iconic Charles Bridge extends over a river teeming with people enjoying a day out on yellow paddle boats, with passenger boats moored on the side, all set against the grandeur of Prague Castle looming in the background.

  • Why visit in June: City sightseeing without the scorching summer heat

Wondering where the best places to visit in June are for couples? Prague certainly fits the bill. It’s one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, rich in history, food, and heaps of fun things to do. In fact, the endless amount of curiosities and attractions in Prague makes it a destination you should return to again and again!

A long weekend escape in June is the perfect amount of time to explore. Catch the sunset from the tower atop Petřín Hill after exploring the nearby Strahov Monastery. Wander through the vineyards on the slopes of Prague Castle – one of the world’s oldest most ancient castles.

Prague can get pretty warm towards the end of June, so why not cool off with a cheeky trip to the Ice Pub by Charles Bridge? You should also check dates for performances by the incredible Prague Philharmonic Orchestra; seeing this fantastic ensemble perform in their home city is truly special.

3. Chamonix, France

During summer, the glaciers in Chamonix attract visitors looking to hike, mountain bike, or rock climb. June is a prime time to visit, thanks to the longer days and comfortable temperatures, which typically range in the high teens. Getting there is simple, too. Fly over the mountains and the stunning lake into Geneva Airport. From there, it’s a simple transfer, either by car or train, up the valley.

Rail enthusiasts will be delighted to learn that there are several mountain train rides to experience, too. The Montenvers Railway is the fastest way to access the glacier and walk among its beautiful man-made ice caves. There’s also a stunning funicular railway from the nearby town of Saint Gervais, which passes up into the mountains above the village of Les Houche. For the best views of Mont Blanc, catch the cable car up to the Aiguille du Midi.

4. Girona, Spain

  • Why visit in June: Admire its exquisite architecture without the crowds

The beautiful Catalonian city of Girona is a destination I can’t recommend enough – particularly for a June getaway. The month experiences pleasant average daily temperatures of around 19°C, perfect for leisurely city strolls. There’s an incredible mishmash of different cultures to soak up, too. From the remnants of its Moorish occupation to the Jewish Quarter, Girona boasts some marvellous architecture, including the grand church of Saint Feliu.

Girona is a prime destination for biking too, with many professionals frequently spotted training in the hills around the city. Whilst Girona is a fantastic destination for a long weekend, travellers looking to see more of the area can make the most of trips to nearby Barcelona and the beaches of the Costa Brava. All sit within an hour of Girona and are easily accessible by public bus.

5. Budapest, Hungary

Beautiful Budapest is easily one of the best places to visit in June if you like immersive architecture, fascinating history and relaxing thermal spas. Technically, it’s two different cities merged into one: the east bank of the Danube, previously known as Pest, and the hills of the western bank, which form the City of Buda. Both offer plenty of allures – from art-packed museums and medieval fortresses to the grand faces of the Hungarian Parliament Building.

Early summer is an ideal time for exploring, plus you’ll find plenty of must-see events. This includes the charming Danube Carnival which focuses on traditional folk dancing.

River cruises on the Danube are a great idea for soaking up city views with the setting sun as a backdrop. It’s also still cool enough in June (especially after dark) to appreciate Budapest’s world-famous spas. The Széchenyi Baths in the heart of City Park are without a doubt the most iconic and certainly the most popular. Looking for a more intimate experience? Visit the stunning baths at Gellért, which boast opulent Art Nouveau decor.

6. Copenhagen, Denmark

There’s something to appeal to everyone in Copenhagen. Soak up some royal history at Frederiksberg Palace, have fun at Tivoli amusement park, or venture to the fascinating free town of Christiania. It’s an independent community that has existed in the city for centuries and has various colourful attractions, including several independent breweries and markets.

June also hosts several great events. Music lover? You’ll be able to catch Distortion (Copenhagen’s biggest street party festival) in early June. There’s also the prestigious Copenhagen Photo Festival hosted across numerous galleries, museums, and art schools.

Where to travel in June: short-haul

Happy to journey a little further this June? Whether you’re keen to tick off some hot June holiday destinations or you’d like to attend an amazing music festival, here are my top two suggestions.

7. Tunis, Tunisia

  • Why visit in June: A blend of history and lazy beach days

When it comes to choosing a holiday destination in June for sunshine, it’s hard to beat Tunis. The city has fantastic weather throughout the summer, so expect to enjoy the Mediterranean’s warmth in full force as you stroll around the maze-like Medina, past Independence Square, and along Avenue Habib Bourguiba. All three boast impressive architecture, with the latter designed as a Tunisian version of the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

If you need a break from the heat, dip into one of the many cafes and restaurants in Tunis. This includes several al fresco venues right along the city’s seafront. And speaking of the sea, what better way to cool off than with a swim? Tunis hosts several idyllic options, including Amilcar Beach just next door to Carthage. Tunis is also awash with incredible ruins, from Roman mosaics to the remnants of the ancient city of Carthage that’s now a UNESCO site.

8. Istanbul, Turkey

A waterside domed mosque with a long suspension bridge running behind it.

Istanbul is a truly thrilling city to visit throughout the year. June offers average temperatures of 23℃ and little to no rain. The city also hosts the Istanbul International Music Festival, one of the world’s most significant classical music gatherings. It’s hosted over three weeks at numerous landmark venues, including the Sureyya Opera House and Hagia Irene Museum.

For family fun, take a trip out on the water to enjoy the beautiful June weather. Cruises run to the car-free Prince’s Islands from Istanbul’s harbour. Once there, you can explore them via horse-drawn carriage and learn more about the area’s extensive history.

Elsewhere, you’ll spot many lovely beaches on Istanbul’s outskirts that fringe the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. Don’t forget to spend some time exploring Sultanahmet as well. The neighbourhood is the home of the monumental Hagia Sophia and the beautiful Blue Mosque.

Long-haul June holiday destinations

It’s not just Europe that’s worth visiting in June. Many destinations around the globe are particularly appealing at this time of year, whether that’s for the weather or special cultural events.

9. Tokyo, Japan

A dark-skinned young female tourist wanders in the street full of various shops, stores, and cafes.
The Tokyo skyline, adorning the banks of the picturesque Sumida River, dazzles with brightly lit bridges, while the iconic Tokyo Skytree stands tall, creating a breathtaking panorama.

Tokyo is definitely one of the best places to visit in Japan in June. The month features two notable festivals in the city: the Sannō Matsuri Festival and the Fussa Firefly Festival. Sannō Matsuri Festival is the biggest festival in the city and culminates in a huge parade that starts and ends at the sacred Hie Shrine.

Alternatively, the Fussa Firefly Festival in mid-June is well-known for its magical Firefly Nights, when the sky is lit up with an impressive display of glowing insects.

There are plenty of other attractions in Tokyo outside of the festival circuit to entice you in June. A trip up the Tokyo Skytree – the world’s tallest tower – is the best way to take in the city’s awesome skyline. Tokyo is a hub for shopping, luxury dining and entertainment, plus it has its own Disneyland if you’re visiting with kids (or are just a kid at heart).

10. Yosemite National Park, USA

A beautiful landscape of a river meandering between the tall lush trees, an imposing granite mountain in the background, and a grazing deer on the shore.

For a big adventure in the great outdoors this June, look no further than Yosemite National Park. This incredible destination, that’s teeming with epic valleys, tinkling waterfalls and rugged peaks, is on many people’s bucket lists. Luckily for you, it’s also one of the best places to visit in June in the US.

Planning a trip in June will mean you’ll avoid peak summer crowds (though do note it’ll likely still be quite busy) Most of the snow has also melted in June, meaning the majority of Yosemite’s 800+ hiking trails will be accessible What’s more, sections of the park are typically blanketed in wonderful wildflowers at this time of year, giving you some truly incredible photo opportunities.
