Best places to visit in Europe in August

Europe is a natural pick for a summer getaway – thanks to warm weather and easy access from the UK. With so many options, though, it can be tricky to know which are the best countries to visit in August. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

1. Reykjavik, Iceland

A picturesque waterfall from a lush and rugged cliff down to a shallow river.

You may think summer is the perfect time to head south, but Reykjavik in Iceland is one of the best places to visit in August. Not only does Iceland boast incredible scenery, but it also experiences nearly unlimited daylight throughout the summer months. This makes August a fantastic time to explore. Summer visitors can also travel to scenic areas like the Westfjords, which are not easily accessible in winter.

Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, is home to a host of cultural activities and music festivals in August. Visitors can enjoy free admission to museums, workshops and other cultural events during August’s Culture Night festival on 24 August. A music lover? Get tickets for the Innipukinn Indie Rock Festival at the start of August or the Reykjavik Jazz Festival at the end of the month.

2. Glasgow, Scotland

Edinburgh enjoys high popularity in August (and according to KAYAK data, high average hotel prices of £199 per night) thanks to the Fringe Festival. Steer clear of the crowds with a trip to Glasgow instead. Glasgow is glorious in the summer months thanks to its collection of lovely city parks, from the Botanic Gardens with their plant-packed glasshouses to the vast Glasgow Green — the oldest park in the city.

For those hoping to soak up a little local culture, Glasgow won’t disappoint. It’s one of the best places for art in Scotland, with the eclectic Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and The Burrell Collection both must-sees. And if you do decide you want to grab tickets for the Edinburgh Fringe? The capital is less than an hour away on the train and easily visited on a day trip from Glasgow.

Number 4. on KAYAK’s data-backed list, and my own personal list, is London. Visiting in August showcases the city at its best with warm days, on average 17℃ and medium popularity, giving you a chance to experience the attractions you’re interested in. If you visit in late August don’t miss Notting Hill’s Caribbean street carnival, which offers an extravaganza of dancing, music and a traditional Caribbean street parade.

If food and beer are more your scene, you will find plenty to tantalise your palette at London’s August Craft Beer Festival, hosted at the atmospheric Tobacco Dock. Meanwhile, the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall also runs throughout August, with daily live classical music performances, screened at outdoor venues and cinemas throughout the city. 5. Sardinia, Italy

Searching for a cheap holiday in August for the whole family? With delicious food, fine wine and sun-drenched vistas, Italy has many charms for avid travellers. However, during summer months like August, the country’s cities can feel hot and crowded. If you want to visit Italy in August, Sardinia (an island off the west coast) is a fantastic option.

Sardinia features many beautiful historical and religious sites, such as the Church of the Holy Trinity of Saccargia and the Narughe Arrubiu, which are great to explore in the balmy, summer heat. The island is also home to beautiful natural wonders along the coast, such as the networks of sea caves or the beautiful Porto Flavia harbour.

Visitors to the region in August will appreciate the cooling sea breeze and dazzling views of the Mediterranean. If you stay in self-catering accommodation, you’ll not only save a little money but you can also enjoy the seasonal produce available at the San Benedetto Market.

Best places to visit in August for a cheap sun getaway

Craving some vitamin D but low on cash? Never fear. There are still plenty of budget-friendly places around the globe to visit for sunshine, including my top pick…

7. Marmaris, Turkey

High angle view of blue Mediterranean sea with mountains in background

When it comes to relaxing summer activities, it’s hard to beat a week or so lounging on a golden sand beach. Tucked away along Turkey’s sparkling Turquoise Coast, Marmaris is one of the best places to travel to in August for water lovers and those craving some sun.

What’s more, Marmaris will cost you considerably less than many other sunshine destinations in August. The main beach is fringed with resort hotels, many of which offer up luxury accommodation for far less than Spanish or Italian holiday hot spots. You can’t fault the weather here, either. August average temperatures sit at a rather toasty 27°C.

If you fancy mixing sunbathing with a little culture, Marmaris comes up trumps. The city’s Grand Bazaar is a brilliant place to pick up some souvenirs. You could also swot up on your ancient history knowledge with a day trip to nearby Ephesus.

Best long-haul destinations in August

If you want to get out of Europe, you’re in luck. There are numerous hot places to go in August further afield, plus some absolute gems if you prefer your temperatures a little cooler.

8. Maasai Mara, Kenya

Tourists in a Land Cruiser observe with excitement as wildebeests and zebras roam the vast grasslands, creating a quintessential African safari experience.

Kenya is one of the best countries to visit in August if you want to see amazing African wildlife in their natural habitat. During August, the vast Maasai Mara game reserve in Kenya is home to the Great Migration. This means that hordes of native species, like wildebeest, gazelles and zebras, travel across the savannah and gather at the local watering holes.

Travellers who visit Maasai Mara during August can enjoy wildlife safaris led by experienced local guides, who have incredible knowledge of the animals and native landscape. The game reserve is also home to plenty of luxurious holiday lodges where you can enjoy the dramatic African scenery from the comfort of your accommodation.

August is also the final month of Africa’s winter season, meaning temperatures are often milder and more manageable if you’re not used to the heat.

9. Lombok, Indonesia

A stunning beach with a traditional double outrigger boat floating on crystal-clear waters.

If you’re searching for hot countries in August for a beach getaway, look no further than Indonesia. The stunning archipelago in Southeast Asia offers a heady mix of vibrant culture and outstanding natural beauty. What’s more, late summer sees some of the driest weather across many of the islands.

While Bali can get busy during August, the neighbouring island of Lombok is a little less hectic and usually cheaper — especially if you plan a trip towards the end of the month. It’s the perfect spot for a more relaxed break, too, due to its vast coastlines and scattering of tiny islands that host relaxed resorts and outstanding snorkelling spots.

The Gili Islands just off the northwest coast are a popular pick for those craving a balance of lazy beach days and lively nightlife. Prefer somewhere a little off the beaten path? Venture to south Lombok where silky, unspoilt beaches are interspersed with sleepy surfing towns and quaint villages where you can see local culture firsthand. There’s also the lesser-known Southern Gilis where you’ll spot family-run resorts suitable for every budget.

10. Okanagan Valley, Canada

If you’re looking for cultural experiences with plenty of family fun thrown into the mix, the Okanagan Valley in Canada is one of the best places to visit in August. This scenic area of British Colombia is tucked away in the southeast of the country, not far from Whistler and Vancouver, and it’s perfect for an outdoor adventure.

August is technically the warmest month of the year in the valley. However, you’ll be glad to hear temperatures tend to sit at a comfortable 19°C – which is ideal of you want to spend your time exploring the great outdoors. There are heaps of trails to tackle, either on foot or mountain bike. This includes Myra Canyon Park and Bear Creek Provisional Park (you can even camp overnight at the latter).

The Okanagan Valley is also a major wine-growing region in Canada, with over 120 wineries spread out across its lush landscape. August is an ideal time to visit a few for wine tastings, especially as the wine harvesting season kicks off midway through the month. You’ll find several vineyards within easy driving distance of the region’s main city, Kelowna. It sits right on the shores of Okanagan Lake and is the perfect base for a Canada getaway.

Recommendation ranking within table:

Our recommendation ranking of where to go is calculated based on average flight prices, average hotel prices, popularity, average temperature, and average precipitation. Flight prices, hotel prices, popularity, and precipitation constitute inverse factors, meaning the lower the better. Average temperature optimal values are taken as the median for the destination, and a difference is calculated for the month from this reference point. The smaller the difference, the more desirable the city is to visit in this month. This temperature factor weighs twice as much as popularity and precipitation.

Flight and hotel prices:

Average prices are estimated from KAYAK internal data from search period ‘2023-11-01’ to ‘2024-01-15’ for travel period ‘2024-08’. Flight prices include economy class return trips for one traveler, and hotel prices represent 3 stars or below hotels’ nightly rates for a standard double room. Price insights are subject to vary depending on the exact departure airport and over time as travel dates are approaching.

Popularity:

Monthly crowd estimates for each destination are determined by internal flight and hotel search data. This incorporates the latest historical insights from the past year collected on ‘15-01-2024’. For each destination, this popularity estimate is pulled for the particular month to gauge where it might not be too crowded.

Weather (average monthly temperature and precipitation):

Weather data is pulled from a third-party site, Weatherbase, and has not been verified by KAYAK. Monthly average temperature and precipitation data isbased on historical insights from the past 102 years. Weatherbase data is updated in real-time from the US Census Bureau and other databases worldwide.
