We bet the view from your window is as lacklustre and tiresome as ours currently is. The clouds hang low, gloomy and pendulous; a grey pall hangs over everything. Even getting out of bed in the morning is in itself an achievement. It’s times like these that we find ourselves slipping into vivid, technicolour daydreams of blues-banishing sunshine and cosy fireplaces.

Here at the KAYAK office, we’ve been letting our daydreams run rampant and using our fantasies to inspire us to answer the question “Where would you most like to be right now?” Here are the 11 destinations we would most like to be; come and daydream with us!

I would like to be … reclining in a hammock on a beach in Panama

Manuel from the KAYAK marketing team dreams of the divine beaches of San Blas.

“As the gloomy weather sets in, my travel fever rises. While I stare out the window, daydreaming away, I see myself on one of the numerous islands of San Blas in Panama. I mean, really, who wouldn’t want to exchange their desk for a hammock stretched between palm trees, where the only reasons to get up are to go soak up the sun or take a swim in the crystal-clear water.”

I would like to … float away in thermal baths

Heinz from the KAYAK Content team dreams of spherical underwater sounds.

“To non-German speakers, the word ‘Bad’ is not usually associated with health, invigoration, meditative balance or indeed anything positive. In the German-speaking world, however, ‘Bad’ literally means ‘bath’ and for anyone hunting the fountain of eternal youth, immersing yourself in the thermal waters of Rogner Bad Blumau in Styria Bad Blum, will rejuvenate you to an almost mythological level. The baths are located outside of Graz, Austria, near the Hungarian border…… ah, none of that’s important. As the water of the outdoor pool floats – no, levitates – you up into the evening, you’ll find the meditative music becomes spherical, and as your eyes gaze into the star-kissed sky, everything else becomes an afterthought.”

I would like to be … sipping on a hot chocolate in Ticino

Liudmilla from the KAYAK PR team dreams of a café in Ascona.

“To be honest, as long as the sun is out, even the crisp winter sun, the place I most want to be is Ascona, in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Sure, it is getting cold in Ascona, but as soon as I’m seated at the Al Porto Ascona café with a cup of hot chocolate in hand, that’s it. I don’t need anything else to be happy. And as an extra bonus, Lago Maggiore is not far away for when I need something scintillating for the eyes.”

I would like to be … watching the stars from the safety of an igloo

Imke from the KAYAK PR team dreams of the Northern Lights.

“What could be more beautiful than to lie, protected from the elements, in an igloo looking up at the starry sky? Imagine being both warm and safe, under the glass-like, transparent roof of said igloo, watching the insanely beautiful colour-play of the Northern Lights! Drinking mulled wine as a fire crackles in the fireplace… I know it sounds like a fantasy, but it’s actually exactly what you get when you check-in to the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in Finnish Lapland.”

I would like to be … away from the rest of the world in a Swiss farmhouse

Emma from the KAYAK PR team dreams of a house in the middle of the forest.

“It really appeals to me. For the moment at least. I don’t need a dream island like Bora Bora or Koh Tan, Thailand. Just a country house; a simple farmhouse somewhere in Switzerland. In the middle of the forest. Oh, and a river should be nearby. Peace, nature, and solitude. Just lovely.”

I would like to be … enveloped in the warmth of a Hamam

Michael from the KAYAK content team dreams of 42° Celsius and a bed made of marble.

“I lie on a stone bed, a gargantuan, preheated marble surface in the middle of the Hamam (Turkish baths) at Bleiche Resort & Spa in Spreewald (south of Berlin). The treatment is divine. A therapist cleanses me with a never-ending stream of warm and cool water, cleansing my skin with a natural silk glove. Later, he towels me down with a soapy, foamy cotton cloth, as light and voluminous as a feather. He massages me and works the worry and tension from me. Again, luke-warm water ripples down over me. The hard marble of my bed and my body become one. A quietened-mind, dreamlike, an almost mystically aggregated state. And the best thing is that the feeling of time seems to flow away into nothingness as the water continues to flow over me.”

I would like to be … on the empty beaches of Tarifa

Andrea from the KAYAK Internationalisation team dreams of long walks.

Tarifa is located in the south of Europe. In fact, it’s the southernmost city on the mainland, but it’s not the town of Tarifa I want to go to. I want to go to Playa de Valdevaqueros, just north-west of the city. During the offseason, there are almost no tourists there. The hustle-and-bustle is hibernating, yet the weather remains mild. And I can take long walks on the sand beach and simply watch; I watch the surfers ride the waves and look out over the sea towards Africa.”

I would like to be … on an island off of Mauritius

Nazia from the KAYAK Marketing team is dreaming of her favourite beach on the Indian Ocean.

“Instead of this lousy winter weather pushing me into repeated bouts of frustration, I would much prefer to be on my favourite beach on the Île aux Cerfs, a tiny island off the east coast of Mauritius, which is only reachable by taking a boat from Trou d’Eau Douce. On the Île aux Cerfs, I would sip the water of a fresh coconut; I would walk on the beach, barefoot in the warm sand, always with the blue-green sea at my side. The one thing that should absolutely not be missed? Taking a nap in the shade of a palm tree.”

I would like to be … enveloped in the darkness of the North

Fie from the KAYAK Internationalisation team dreams of snow and red wine.

“If it’s already cold and dark, I’m going to embrace it. I’d like to be in Tromsø. This is in Norway, deep in the north. Almost 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. From the end of November to the middle of January the sun doesn’t even rise. I see myself sitting with a good glass of red wine in front of a fireplace. I stare out the window, the world outside lost under a blanket of snow, lost in thought, and perhaps, if I’m lucky, I’ll catch the Northern Lights from time to time.”

I would like to be … watching turtles hatch in Mexico

Adriana from the KAYAK Internationalization team dreams of Oaxaca and the best cuisine in Mexico.

“Oh, well, I’d like to be in Mazunte, Mexico; mainly because of the weather. Located in Oaxaca, which is found on the Pacific Coast in the south, the weather is a major drawcard, as it’s unbeatable all year round. Also, there are incredibly beautiful beaches, cheap accommodation and the Oaxacan food? Indisputably the best Mexican cuisine you’ll ever taste! In general, this corner of Mexico is not particularly crowded, but the best time to enjoy the almost-empty beaches is late November and December. And if you plan your trip well, you can head La Escobilla Sanctuary and watch, or even lend a hand, as 1000s of turtles hatch from their eggs.”

I would like to be … feeling like a noble in France

Marine from the KAYAK Content team dreams of a Luxury Hotel in Puymirol.

“Even the standard rooms make you feel like a princess. At Relais & Châteaux ‘Michel Trama’ in Puymirol near Toulouse (France), it is a pleasure just to be seated at your table, overlooking the roaring fireplace, fantasising about the upcoming dinner. The Michel Trama is a perfectly-preserved country estate that belonged to the Count of Toulouse and was built in the 13th century, so you can just imagine how refined everything is. And it goes without saying that the boot of my hired car is filled with bottles from the regional winemakers of Bazillac, St. Emilion and Bordeaux.”
