FAQs - booking Mauritius flights

  • Will I have to switch aircraft on flights to Mauritius?

There aren't many direct flights from the UK, so it's easy to find cheap flights to Mauritius that make stopovers in-between. Kenya Airways offers very cost-effective flights from London Heathrow Airport (LHR), for instance. You can also fly from Edinburgh Turnhouse Airport (EDI) on KLM, switching planes to Kenya Air at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) and making another plane change at Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta Airport (NBO). These flights can sometimes save you a few hundred pounds too.

  • Are more sustainable flights to Mauritius available?

Some airlines offer a more carbon-efficient service on this route than average. Air Mauritius flies directly to the Indian Ocean resort island from Heathrow, emitting over 50% less CO2. If you're flying from an airport like Manchester (MAN), you can save almost 50% in carbon emissions by choosing flights operated jointly by Air France and Air Mauritius. On these flights you'll change planes at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG). You can get an identical Air France/Air Mauritius flight out of Manchester too.

  • Should I bring Mauritian rupees?

You can bring Mauritian rupees with you, or you can opt to exchange cash for Mauritian rupees on the island, as the deals offered are usually better than the exchange rate offered in the UK. Even though airports are known to offer bad rates, in Mauritius, you are more likely to find good rates.

  • Are there direct flights to Mauritius?

The only airline that flies direct from London Heathrow Airport to Mauritius is Air Mauritius, while British Airways have the most frequent direct flights from London Gatwick Airport to Mauritius.

  • What is the duty-free limit of Mauritius?

  • How do I get from the airport to the city?

There are three bus services that provide transport to and from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport: Bus 09, Bus 10 and Bus 198. The travel time takes more than 1h to most major destinations on the island. Alternatively, you can take a taxi from the airport.

  • How long is the flight to Mauritius?

An average direct flight from the United Kingdom to Mauritius takes 24h 00m, covering a distance of 6192 miles. The most popular route is London - Port Louis with an average flight time of 13h 40m.

  • What is the cheapest flight to Mauritius?

The next most popular destination is Mont Lubin (0.4%).

  • How does KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

For common medications, you do not need to have a prescription. Drugs like tranquillisers, hypnotics, narcotics, and other strong pain killers will need prior authorisation. You should submit your application to the Mauritius High Commission at least 2 weeks prior to your travel. This can be done by sending scanned copies of the following documents: the bio data page of your passport; your recent prescription for the medication and certificate from your doctor; your date of arrival and the date of return; the quantity of each medication you are carrying into Mauritius, as well as your intended address in Mauritius. Upon submission of these documents to the Mauritius High Commission, you will be given a letter of authorisation prior to your travel to Mauritius.
  • Cigarette papers are also not allowed in Mauritius, so you should carry regular cigarettes instead of rolled cigarettes to Mauritius.
  • If you are travelling with children, car hire services usually offer car seats. When booking your resort, check if it is child-friendly as some resorts are not open to children.

Pros: "Emirates itself was great but using fly Dubai from Dubai to Kabul was awful."
Cons: "No flights to Kabul using Fly Dubai when someone books tickets actually for Emirates."
Pros: "Ladies worked hard"
Cons: "I now understand how the chicken and live stock must feel in their cages and stalls. Perhaps the CEO and management staff must be made to take the same flights in the same conditions in so called Economy class. So much greed! Hoping for the day, Air travel becomes obsolete."
Pros: "I had a trouble because of crazy guy who sat behind of my seat. But crews didn't try to solve that problem actively. So, I will complaint about the attitudes of crews tomorrow morning."
Cons: "Crews attitude for the problems because of crazy guy of the flight. That was very passive responce. I was very embarrassed and frustrated. Why didn't the crews control and solve that kinds of problem? I don't understand. The crazy guy hits my seat about 4 to 5 times strongly."
Pros: "The movies"
Cons: "Lack of crying babies and lack of sleep seats too close lack of comfort"
Pros: "Good crew and friendly"
Cons: "Food was not good for lunch as if it was spoiled. I knew two others that did not eat I am 6.0 and seats were tight but that is common across all airlines"
Cons: "Too warm, chaotic boarding, not enough baggage space, airline couldn’t upgrade me at the gate with miles."
Pros: "The flight from Dubai was fine. I am not a big fan of Dubai but their check-in and boarding process is efficient and straight forward."
Cons: "The food on this short flight was not very good and looked liked it had some age to it. I chose not to eat it."
Pros: "Seats and bathrooms were big"
Cons: "Service was extremely slow. I kept having to ask for more water all the time. Flight attendants were nice, but not well trained. Food quality was pretty poor, especially for international business class"
Pros: "Great selection of movies, excellent food, friendly service."
Cons: "Boarding required a lot of waiting in lines only to be moved to another area where we had to wait again. There was very little leg room in between seats."
Pros: "The check in was with a smile and a good service"
Cons: "The terminal was separated from the duty free and it was prostrating they all the shops were an available including the tax free refund."
Cons: "Seat adjustments on both our seats in Business Class were not working!!"
Pros: "The flight crew was friendly and kind."
Cons: "The check in at MXP took us a lot of time and there was no defined line for people to wait without other people can pass them. Some how there is people who stand in line for 10 minutes and others for 40 minutes, the ground attendants didn’t really cared about it."
Cons: "They didnt load a special meal (child) that I had requested for my two year old. Luckily we had packed extra food. They returned that car seat all wet at SFO. Didn't even have the decency to put a plastic cover on it. Overall I found the crew lacking any warmth and the service was mediocre at best. The food was below average. Overall highly disappointed. I had assumed that Turkish would be like it's other middle Eastern airlines line Emirates or Qutar but they are not. I would take my business elsewhere"

we were bumped from our over $350 prepaid seats for the 4th time and without reason or explanation when we spoke to 2 different agents. This was a long flight and got the most uncomfortable seats without the ability to have them changed since this double deck airbus plane was completely full. What's the point in paying and reserving seats months in advance only to be moved and not refunded because the agent didn't have the ability to issue the refund at customer service for British Airways. Will never fly this airline again due to all 4 of our flights having the same issue with losing our seats.

Cons: "Exiting passengers from the rear exposed the entire flight as people had to walk past those seated from the back to front. Great social distancing and we'll done British Airways"
Pros: "Crew was ok and the seat was a bit uncomfortable. I am over 6 feet so I always have a bit of a problem with the seat"
Cons: "Seat"
Cons: "Seats are very tight and are short on comfort. The "occupied" toilet signs not working causing queues. On meals, forget the things that are impossible to to sustain in a fresh/tasty state, like melon, Tomatoes fried, certain types of sandwich where the bread absorbs any liquid/juice, overuse of rolls. The meals are tested under almost clinical conditions, who ever travels Economy and tastes the food in situ. Put more of the edible foood in. People prefer a single course meal as against a 3 course with dead ends on each side of the main."
Cons: "the onboard entertainment is a very old system based on small unpractical screen. Mine was also broken. My meal came, twice, with no cold drinks. I had to call the crew but did not answer all the times. When they came, they brought the wrong drink."
Pros: "Nothing."
Cons: "This airline flew me from Manchester to London. At the worst time."
Pros: "I did not fly. Cancel month ago, no money back. No good company!"
Cons: "I cancel month ago, no money back !!! No good company!"
Pros: "Ran into some turbulence and the pilot did a great job calming down the passengers and explain the weather situation."
Cons: "food option were limited, only one meal choice left"
Pros: "Plane was much more comfortable than the old AA plane we flew to Lisbon. Crew was excellent. First meal was good. I was in window seat, and enjoyed the side bin with also gave armrest space."
Cons: "Second meal of "hot pocket" type of thing was poor. Plan took off late due to security checks"
Cons: "Missed connection from LHR to INV, now sitting 8 hours at LHR waiting for the next flight. In a word, a disaster!"

My flight from Nairobi to nyc. My seat made noise and moved around. The two toilets in the back didn’t work well cause you didn’t know if someone was in there cause the light didn’t work. The bathroom doors didn’t lock well either, so I walked in on someone. The crew wasn’t quick or super helpful. When I went to get something they were chatting and they would look at me, continue on with their conversation and finally I would interrupt to get a drink.

The flight never took off. We sat on the tarmac for over two hours due to an electrical fault and finally the flight was cancelled. We were told that hotels would be organised but there was no further communication. In the end I retrieved my baggage and went to the car park to pick up my car and drive home. It cost me over £150 to park the car for two weeks, plus of course petrol, and over £600 for the four flights and £50 for the travel visa. All gone up in my smoke. I’m bitterly disappointed that my business Trip was cancelled and have been told I will get a “partial refund” within three months!!! What a way to treat a customer.

Our experience was terrible. Much of our itinerary was missing when we tried to reconfirm or when we arrived at the airport, even though the Kenya Airways App had us listed. By the time, it was sorted out, our flight from Livingstone to Nairobi was full. To meet our commitments (and get home), we had to find ground transport to Lusaka, purchase a one-way ticket for each of us to Nairobi, book an extra hotel night in both Lusaka and Nairobi, plus the cost of extra meals. For the 2 of us, we incurred over $1500 in extra expense. I filed a concern with the airline October 19, received a incident report number, but have not heard back as of November 2. It was a challenging and disappointing experience.

Cons: "Comfier seats Some entertainment...there was none. Plane very hot and claustrophobic"
Pros: "I enjoyed the crew...they were friendly the whole time. The food was great."
Cons: "The delay was painful. Hope they work out overlays properly to avoid further delays."
Pros: "The plane is nice with wonderful amenities. The flight was on time even though departure was 1 hour late. The price is great."
Cons: "The staff did not care. They caused many of the delays, exasperated many customers, and slept during the flight instead of tending to the needs of passengers. If you're prepared to take care of yourself, the price and speed may be too hard to pass."
Pros: "They should send us prior notice of changes in flights. My flights where delayed by almost 6 hours both inbound and outbound bound"
Cons: "Check in agents should do their job as per their description not wasting our time and keychatting with their collegues"
Cons: "My flights were changed a lot the week before my flight even though I had booked months ahead."
Pros: "The easy and comfortable element of the flight."
Cons: "I didn’t really hear any boarding announcements, it would of been to be told we would be debording the plane by steps in the rain"
Cons: "The temperature of the cabin was ridiculous. The entertainment didn't work and the food was poor."

Check in and passport and security time’s appalling Not enough staff for the volume of flights departing.

The crew were great as usual. The flight was rescheduled two hours later but delayed by more than an hours to load cargo. The was upsetting because I missed scheduled meetings in Johannesburg.

Though the food was very good ,I think the portions were too big. It was hard to manage everything on that small table. And you really don't feel like eating too much on a long flight. Just a suggestion and it would save you some money too.

Cons: "Apart from beverages with the meal, there was no other offer for any beverage. This is a 4 hour flight. Really uncomfortable"
Pros: "Food was good, entertainment system was good."
Cons: "Crew told me to wait while they eat their meal (on a 4.5 hour flight?) headphones get cleared 20min before landing but all the rubbish gets left on your tray table. delayed departure because the plane was being cleaned, i think if they cleared the rubbish in flight then perhaps it wouldn't be so dirty. Also no information provided as to why the boarding was 30min delayed (COMMUNICATION!)"
Pros: "Seat was very comfortable"
Cons: "Inflight entertainment could be much better. Not much choice of films, particularly latest ones. Headsets very uncomfortable and sound quality poor."
Cons: "General lack of concern for passengers. The kids in the seats next to me had screens that weren’t working and they wouldn’t even try to fix them. despite the fact that the water was there, when I declined the meal but asked for something to drink they refused until later."
Pros: "Crew were friendly and helpful."
Cons: "Flight was delayed all throughout. Plane was old and uncomfortable compared to other Air Mauritius planes I’ve used. Food really bad I did Not enjoy this flight whatsoever Missed my onward connections"
Pros: "It landed safely"
Cons: "Delayed 3hrs with no information just apologies. Toilets onboard not clean and leaking. Several trays broken. Coffe/Tea served by pouring over customers rather than tray with cup. Safety information only shown when landing. Staff bumped isle passengers several times (me 4 times) with no apology. Chaos in serving dinner as special meals and vegetarian meals sent to wrong seats."
Pros: "I sat onseat 8c on this old Airbus 319 and my knees were killing me so little legroom. Im only 1.78m"
Cons: "Take out one row and give cattle class a little bit mor space please. I already have deep vein trombosis from flying."
