Where’s hot in June: Europe & short-haul destinations
June is one of my favourite months to visit Europe. The sun is out and school summer holidays are yet to begin, meaning quieter beaches and slightly lower prices.
1. Mykonos, Greece
Average June temperature: 23°C
It only takes three hours or so to reach the dreamy island of Mykonos. It’s the best known of the Cyclades islands and a real haven for culture and a more lively party vibe. There are plenty of great bases from which to explore, including charming villages like Ano Mera and the history-packed Mykonos Town.
Mykonos arguably has some of the best beaches in Greece – think luminous blue sea and serene bays. The aptly named Paradise Beach is the most famous, while neighbouring Super Paradise Beach is lined with buzzing beach clubs. For a calmer vibe, Argari Beach is an idyllic white-sand swathe just 8.5 kilometres south of the main town.
Greece is known as one of Europe’s hottest summer destinations, especially in recent years. There are plenty of ways to keep cool, though. From swimming in the Aegean Sea to lounging with a cold ouzo in the shade at a local beachside taverna.
2. Málaga, Spain

Average June temperature: 22°C
The Andalucian city of Málaga is a reliable summer beach destination. Malagueta Beach is my go-to, or the less central Raven Beach. Málaga is also known for its impressive art scene and it was even the birthplace of Picasso. Make sure you venture into the Picasso Museum to see numerous works in his iconic neoclassical style.
The historic Old Town is the place to goif you want to browse modern boutiques and sip sangria at rooftop terrace bars. It’s also the location of the Alcazaba: an 11th century Moorish fortress with sweeping vistas of the city’s port.
3. Athens, Greece

Average June temperature: 25°C
June is an ideal month to visit Athens and it’s various ancient treasures. Daytime temperatures typically sit in the mid-20s, making strolling around its ruins in the sunshine a pleasant experience.
And speaking of ruins, there’s a plethora to tick off – including the legendary hilltop Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. You could also just get lost of the city’s cobbled streets or make the most of the dry weather to enjoy green spaces like the Athens National Garden.
4. Palermo, Italy

With average temperatures of 22°C and highs reaching 25°C, Sicily’s capital, Palermo, offers an ideal climate for sunny strolls, vibrant markets, and stunning coastal views.
This is peak season for beach lovers and culture seekers. Wander through the Vucciria market, relax on nearby beaches and experience legendary Sicilian hospitality.
At around £221 for flights and £134 per night on average for hotels, Palermo delivers budget-friendly Mediterranean charm without the extreme heat of southern destinations.
5. Madrid, Spain
Madrid’s summer season brings world-class museums, lively neighbourhood festivals and exceptional dining experiences. Budget-friendly accommodation and competitive direct flight prices from the UK make this an accessible European getaway, too.
For great local food, head to the mercados. During the day, stalls sell fresh local produce, and at night, many turn into restaurant spaces. To escape the tourist hot spots, check out Mercado de Vallehermoso. Mercado de San Fernando and Mercado de Chamberí.
6. Marseille, France

Experience the French Riviera’s warmth without the peak summer crowds. June brings pleasant temperatures averaging 21°C with highs reaching 25°C, perfect for exploring Marseille’s vibrant harbour district and historic Old Town. Minimal rainfall ensures sunny days, ideal for waterfront dining and coastal walks.
This is prime season for discovering local markets brimming with Provençal produce, visiting nearby calanques coves, and enjoying outdoor culture. The city’s renowned bouillabaisse tastes even better under Mediterranean skies. At £179 for flights from the UK, Marseille offers good value compared to other June destinations.
7. Naples, Italy

Experience the home of pizza in the sun this June. Wander through ancient Roman ruins, savour authentic Neapolitan cuisine at waterfront restaurants, and take day trips to nearby Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.
The warm June weather makes it ideal for outdoor dinner and drinks, while accommodation prices remain more reasonable than the peak July-August season.
Note that the first Sunday of June is a holiday (Festa della Repubblica) and can be particularly crowded with locals. If you do want to visit that weekend, make sure to book well in advance.
8. Antalya, Turkey
Average June temperature: 24°C
With warm temperatures and barely any rain, June is the ideal month to visit the Turkish coastal city of Antalya and stroll its ancient bazaars and Roman ruins without overheating. It also marks the very beginning of the peak season, so it’ll still be possible to grab a bargain on hotels and flights. In fact, KAYAK data shows that average flight prices are around £164 in June.
Antalya’s shimmering coastline is by far its biggest attraction. You’ll find some of Turkey’s best beaches dotted around the city – each one featuring golden sand and the clear waters of the Turquoise Coast. There are plenty of brilliant day trip options from Antalya, too, if you fancy mixing R&R and a bit of culture. My top picks are the jaw-dropping Lycian Rock Tombs and the idyllic seaside town of Fethiye.
9. Istanbul, Turkey

Average June temperature: 21°C
Istanbul in June offers average temperatures of 21℃ and little to no rain. The city also hosts the Istanbul International Music Festival, one of the world’s most significant classical music gatherings. It’s hosted over three weeks at numerous landmark venues, including the Sureyya Opera House and Hagia Irene Museum.
For family fun, take a trip out on the water to enjoy the beautiful June weather. Cruises run to the car-free Prince’s Islands from Istanbul’s harbour. Once there, you can explore them via horse-drawn carriage and learn more about the area’s extensive history.
Elsewhere, you’ll spot many lovely beaches on Istanbul’s outskirts that fringe the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. Don’t forget to spend some time exploring Sultanahmet as well. The neighbourhood is the home of the monumental Hagia Sophia and the beautiful Blue Mosque.
10. Skiathos, Greece
The island of Skiathos comes alive in the summer, with crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and water sports without the intense summer heat of July and August.
June brings minimal rainfall and abundant sunshine, making it the golden month for exploring Skiathos’ charming villages, pine-fringed beaches, and vibrant local culture.
Whether you’re seeking relaxation on sandy beaches or adventure through Mediterranean landscapes, Skiathos delivers perfect weather for creating unforgettable memories.
Where is hot in June and cheap
For a cheap sun holiday in June, it’s hard to beat Greece and its postcard-perfect islands. You’ll also find some great deals on cheap accommodation in Spain if you fancy a mini road trip along the blissful south coast. Craving a slice of paradise but have a strict budget? June is a sublime time to book that once-in-a-lifetime Philippines island escape.
