KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Okayama

  • Use cheap car hire in Okayama to see this Japanese city, into the suburbs and out to the countryside. Public transport is available in Okayama, but the freedom, independence and cost-saving of car hire is one sure way to take your holiday to memorable heights. With incredible stretches of highway such as the Okayama Expressway, you can get in and out of the city to see sights such as the 16th-century black Okayama Castle, the iconic Korakuen Garden, the Hayashibara Museum of Art and the Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art. Travel on Route 28 through the different layers of countryside and go from city to nature within 20 minutes, finally landing up in the resort town of Ushimado.
  • Land in Japan and collect your Okayama car hire at the Okayama Airport (OKJ), based a quick 30-minute away from Central Okayama. The car hire area is based in the Arrivals Hall of the airport, and here you will find global companies such as Sunnycars, Alamo, keddy, Hertz, National, Enterprise and Europcar. If you need accessories for your car hire, such as GPS or infant car seats, it's a good idea to book them beforehand.
  • With your cheap car hire in Okayama, you will be spoilt with large, well-surfaced and well-signed roads on which to enjoy your driving experience. Like the UK, Japan drives on the left-hand side of the road, so you will be confident from the get-go. Road signs are mostly written in the Japanese alphabet, but some have English translations underneath. This will be where your GPS will come in handy, as you can easily turn it to English mode. Drinking and driving is not tolerated in Japan and there is a blood alcohol limit of 0.03%, which is very low compared to the UK’s 0.08%, so appoint a designated driver before attempting big nights out. Stay buckled up and courteous to local drivers, and always pull over for traffic officers.
  • When driving your cheap car hire in Okayama, you will find the weather will be tolerable even in winter, as this part of Japan doesn’t get too much rain or snow. Automatic transmission vehicles are favoured and will be the default from your car hire company. If you prefer a stick shift, request one during your booking. Okayama, like most Japanese cities, does experience high traffic volumes during rush hour and this will be the biggest challenge on the road. Plan your trips beforehand and avoid driving during 8:00 and 9:00 and between 17:00 and 18:00, if you can. Do your research on how to refuel at Japanese petrol stations, as they are all self-service with Japanese instructions.
  • Small hire cars in Okayama are around 53% cheaper than other car types, on average

FAQs about car hire in Okayama

  • How can I find car hires near me in Okayama?

Take a look at our extensive car hire location map to find the best car hire deals near you.

  • How much does a Small car hire cost in Okayama?

A Small car hire in Okayama costs £91 per day, on average.

  • How much does a Medium car hire cost in Okayama?

A Medium car hire in Okayama costs £73 per day, on average.

  • Should I get insurance when hiring a car in Okayama?

Most car hire providers in Okayama offer insurance but the level of protection can differ substantially. If you're unsure whether to get extra protection for your car hire in Okayama, check out KAYAK's car hire insurance guide.

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Okayama?

With such excellent roads and mostly flat terrain, you can choose your car choice depending on budget and itinerary. A smaller economy car will be great for fuel saving, while a family will enjoy more space in a sedan or an SUV. There is no need for a high-performance vehicle unless you like the experience of driving a luxury vehicle, but with strict speed limits, you may not be able to do the driving experience justice.

  • What is the speed limit in Okayama?

Speed limits are strict and observed in kilometres in Japan. When driving urban, two-way roads in Okayama, you will need to stick to 40 km/h (25 mph). Divided, national expressways are limited to 60 km/h (37 mph) and on motorways the limit is 100 km/h (62 mph). Japanese drivers tend to follow road rules, which is partly due to a culturally strong respect for rules, but also very strict road rule enforcement.

  • Where are the best places to park in Okayama?

Parking fees will vary depending on time and location. On average, you can expect to pay around 1000 JYP (about 5.54 GBP) per hour in tourist areas and the city centre. You will find a combination of both street parking and car parks in which to leave your vehicle. Find parking at Arai Parking, Chome Kōseichō Parking or Okayama Station and look out for the traditional parking signs, as most car parks’ names use the Japanese alphabet.

Very friendly staff. Everything for my rental went well, my only issue was a mistake I made renting a vehicle for the next weekend. They could not fully cancel that reservation and their mobile website was terrible. Had someone back home contact the company and cancel.
