All cars are based on the customers appetite, you cannot go wrong with any car in Switzerland. I would suggest SUV because it's really helpful if you decide to visit any alpine environment. One thing I would love to know before renting a car was the parking situation in Switzerland, that you need to pay for every hour you're parking (day and night). I was a bit flabbergasted but it is fair because in that way you give more freedom for the pedestrians.

Some roads are quite narrow so be careful driving. Follow the speed limits as they are strictly enforced. Give yourself extra time to get to your destination. There is frequent road construction as the summer repair season is short. Use Google maps and don't freak out if you miss your turn as there is usually an easy way back even if it includes a number of one way roads. Parking is limited everywhere so car parks are a good solution. "Frei" means there are openings in the park. Take a ticket when entering and prepay using the machines before going to your car or you might find yourself having to back up to go pay the ticket.

Take pictures before you leave their desk, dont be pressurized into taking any extra insurance, especially at the time you book the car , and make sure before you leave the USA what your credit card will cover. This is a crooked business that most car rental companies are involved in. In a different country, we were told the insurance that we bought at the time of booking was useless, rubbish, and covered nothing.

They charged me EXTRA on my credit card BEFORE I took delivery of the car even after I was assured the payment was made in full ( no balance owing). Upon return of the vehicle, they found a very minor nick in the windshield. I have attempted to have this resolved over MANY emails and keep getting the 'run around", even after they admit that the overcharge at the beginning was their mistake. They have considered the case closed and are with holding the money they mistakingly charged to my account ( the money owed is more than a windshield repair ) I will NEVER deal with Hertz Rental again.

The car was good, however, the girl at the counter failed to inform me that there was a cap on the km I could drive, even tho she asked me where I was heading. You would think they can easily calculate the KM in their booking system. I've requested a refund for the extra charge, under the transparency consumer laws in Switzerland. So dodgy.

My worst experience in rental cars in a decade. I have rented cars across many countries and continents and ironically the worst experience was in Switzerland. There was missing information in the pick up. They lied about insurance of the car in the pick up. The insurance value was a daily amount and not a single amount like they mentioned. Also they overcharged 20CHF due to a reason they could not figure out at the dropoff and couldn't repay in it! needed to write an email to complain and still waiting for the money

How can any words describe the experience I received??? Online the quote I agreed was £330 for 5 nights hire of a mini convertible. On the day I arrived I was told this figure was not correct and I should now pay £400 plus an additional £135 for insurance. Ok insurance fair enough, it’s high but it’s still a choice, but why the additional £70 above quoted price, which by the way stated includes ALL fees! However it get far worse, on the final day our flight was cancelled so I emailed asking to extended my booking 1 day… A new invoice arrives… £780!!! So what started at £330 ended up at £780… take off the £135 for insurance that’s an un-expected increase of £315 for an additional days hire… Oh and what did the advisor say at the airport… ‘Welcome to Switzerland, get used to it!’ Complaint raised, but of course no response…

So collection of the vehicle at Zurich, had to wait in line because only one staff member on duty. Not given paperwork on allocated vehicles condition. Informed was being upgraded to next sized car, of which I did not want as I booked an economy car to save fuel (as a result i spent more on fuel because of upgrade). Told no economy cars available!!!! Got to vehicle, which was covered in scratches, dents, marks etc (is this why I wasn't given the paperwork on condition of allocated vehicle). Informed lady in enterprise office who gave out the keys, wasn't interested in this car and told me to take photos of scratches etc and report them on the return. Told me she was too busy to look at vehicle (outstanding) During the use of this vehicle I was not impressed. Having returned vehicle at airport with full tank of fuel, and placed keys in security box, I have to this day received no confirmation from the company of the vehicles return, nothing. Not really good enough, and not what I paid for

The agent who we interacted upon our arrival was not helpful and was not empathetic at all. I forgot my physical cards and my husband’s credit card was acting up. We were trying to pay with cash/debit card and were told they won’t accept it and they do not allow apple pay or cash as the “whole of Switzerland” guess what? We were able to use apple pay anywhere and Sixt helped us get a vehicle without that unhelpful tone like that guy.

Good customer service 👍 But when I book online make the cover my vehicle insurance, when I pick the car they said no insurance then I add extra 1000 dollars, but you have to check and refund my money back .please

Poor pick up instructions: No mention in email of where/how to pickup. No mention that Thrifty was at Hertz counter. Very small Thrifty sign that I missed. Airport info desk told me to take a shuttle to holiday inn?! I wasted a lot of time finding the pickup.

The lady at hertz counter made us wait for 30 mins. Last time the same insurance costed me 20 chf on the counter this time she charged 37 chf and when asked why is it more expensive than last time she said at counter is expensive. No briefing of the car type and features were mentioned. Poor service & unfriendly staff

Staff refused to give us the car at stated pick up time of 4pm and tried to upsell us to another car saying that the original car booked would not be available for 3 hours and we would have to wait. We only managed to get the car after over an hour of waiting and arguing with staff. Extremely aggressive and non stop use of scam tactics in an attempt to upsell.

Pros:

We liked our vehicle once we finally got what we thought we were getting. They did work with us on switching vehicles but we're not very happy about it.

Cons:

The photo showed on line was iof a large van, not a minivan. We were paying about $1,500, which is a lot money for a rental vehicle. There were six adults and seven pieces of luggage. We traveled with the same group a couple of years ago and knew we needed a larger vehicle. However, when we got to Avis, they tried to send us with a minivan. We went back to the counter and they reassigned us vehicles four different times! It was a painful and lengthy process. In the end, we finally got an in between size vehicle, which worked out fine. It's just too bad they didn't give us what was pictured initially. We end up spending the first two hours of our vacation trying to get our rental vehicle straightened out, which was rather irritating for all of us!

Pick up in Kloten was quick and easy. I never like trying to be tricked into upcharging the price of my vehicle with add-ons such as extra insurance toll passes and such. These can double the price of your rental and your charge card covers you for the extra insurance. Having said that, we were charged over $550 for a scrape mark on the rear tire. Yes, a scrape mark. No damage to the rim and the tire was fine. We were only informed of this after we returned home. Unfortunately Avis, like almost all rental car companies are always out to "get you" with extra charges.
