KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Innsbruck
Car hire in Innsbruck is a fantastic way to see this medieval Austrian city based in the heart of the Alps. Surrounded by long scenic roads all around the city, several must-see destinations are not reachable by public transport, making Innsbruck car hire a great way to experience the wonders of the region. Apart from a myriad of city attractions, you can take your hire car up the legendary Kauntertal Glacial Road, winding up 1900 vertical metres for a spectacular view of the city. 45 miles out of Innsbruck you can find the medieval town of Kufstein, rich with history, meadows and forests.
If visiting Innsbruck by plane, you will find a host of car hire companies based at the airport, such as Avis, Budget, Dollar and several others. Once you have collected your luggage, walk outside the Arrivals terminal at the airport and you will see the car rental area. The city has several second branch options if you decide to conveniently drop off and continue your trip without flying.
Depending on what time of year you visit Innsbruck, be aware of snowfall when booking a vehicle. In heavy snow conditions, you will be required to have snow tyres on larger vehicles. Generally the roads of inner Innsbruck are well-maintained and cleared of snow regularly, making it less daunting. Most of Innsbruck Old Town is pedestrianised and does not allow traffic, but be careful in the surrounding streets, as the area is well-populated. Innsbruck is also one of the most well-loved cities for cyclists, so look out for them in the centre and even more so on the mountain roads. Getting a sat nav will be great way to help you avoid congestion and navigate effectively.
Innsbruck is a university city, with two main universities attracting many students, and as popular destination for winter sports, the city sees a fair deal of traffic move along its roads. Servicing the city are the busy A12 and A13 motorways, which run around the edge of the region with several busy turn-offs into the city. Avoid main roads around peak hour times (7:00 and 17:00 in particular) as this is when congestion is at its highest. Roads surrounding the university and heading into the city, such as Innrain, suffer the most from inner-city congestion.
If you’re looking for the best deals for your Innsbruck car hire experience, then it’s worth making your arrangements online with KAYAK prior to your arrival. This way you’re more likely to get a better deal and you’ll save time when arranging collection. The best place to hire your vehicle is Kranebitten Innsbruck International Airport (INN), as here you will find the best deals with a range of different car hire companies to choose from, whilst it’s only around 15 minutes by car to the city. You can locate the car hire centre directly opposite the airport terminal, only a few minutes’ walk via a covered walkway.
After sorting out your Innsbruck car hire, make sure you’re aware of any local driving regulations and whether there are any vehicle restrictions in the city. Firstly, in Austria, you must drive on the right-hand side of the road, and also ensure you have your driving licence, rental agreement, and insurance in the vehicle at all times. You must also be at least 21 years of age to hire a vehicle. For vehicle restrictions, the city has implemented an environmental zone, known as the "Innsbruck Umweltzone," which restricts the access of certain vehicles to the city centre. The restrictions apply to all types of vehicles, such as cars, buses, and trucks, and are enforced 24/7. Vehicles that do not meet the emissions standards can get a penalty fine.
When driving in Austria, it’s really important to know about the drink-driving law. It is illegal to drive a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.05% or higher. For drivers who have held a driving licence for less than two years, the legal limit is 0.01%. To have a BAC above the legal limit, there are possible penalties, such as fines or a licence suspension, as well as possible imprisonment, depending on the severity of the offence.

Hertz Innsbruck claimed we damaged the vehicle (a small scuff to the rim) despite the fact we never parked close to a curb or came close to one on the road. The "damage" was 100% there before we picked the car up. Prior to driving, I inspected the vehicle in their poorly lit facility and even if I had noticed the scuff on the rim, would not have considered it worth reporting. They are now claiming the damage is worth over 1,000 Euros. Hopefully our credit card insurance will cover the claim but I cannot believe the situation we are in with a supposedly reputable rental car company. This feels like they are trying to take advantage of tourists unable to fight such a claim.

Booked via Kayak, for $45 per day. Turned out to be $85 per day because bullshit story about insurances eg $10/day extra if you go across border to Germany or Italy. Left without renting the car TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE
Some Innsbruck car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Innsbruck.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Innsbruck car hire.
