KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Penzance

  • Enjoy a trip to the south coast of England and benefit from the flexibility that car hire in Penzance provides. Explore the town at your own pace, rather than relying on alternative transport methods. Go for a drive around the harbour, or take a trip further afield and drive to Mên-an-Tol, an iconic Bronze Age monument. Around a 20min drive away from the town centre, it’s far more convenient to visit this tourist site with Penzance car hire than with other modes of transport.
  • Penzance is located close to the southernmost point of the UK, so it isn’t surrounded by major airports. However, you can get to Exeter Airport (EXT) in about 2h from the town centre. At this airport you’ll find several car hire companies, such as Avis and Europcar. These are easy to locate as they are just outside the terminal building. Upon arrival, leave the Arrivals hall and take a left, at which point you will see the car hire companies. If you are unable to find them, just follow the signposts pointing you in the right direction.
  • Penzance is a small town in the south of England, positioned far away from other large towns and cities. So, when comparing it to other more mainstream towns, it is a little quieter. That being said, it is a popular destination for tourists, especially in the summer when holidaymakers are looking for some Cornish sun. This makes the roads a lot busier, so during the holiday season be alert to tourists crossing the road without looking properly. Penzance is also close to the beginning (or end, depending on how you look at it) of the famous Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle route, so you can expect lots of cyclists on the roads throughout the year. Keep an eye out for cyclists when driving your Penzance car hire through the town centre, as they may be in a hurry.
  • With car hire in Penzance, you will notice that the roads are busier during peak times (between 8:00 and 9:00, and 17:00 and 18:00), when locals are heading to and from work. So, if possible, try to avoid driving at these times. It will also be a lot busier during the warmer months, as Penzance is a popular tourist destination for visitors from the rest of the UK. The A30 gets particularly busy due to it being one of the main roads connecting Penzance to the rest of the country, so you may want to avoid driving on this road when possible.
  • Penzance is aiming to reduce traffic congestion in its town centre, emphasising access for pedestrians and cyclists instead. In some areas, there are simply stricter speed limits or suggestions for alternate routes. In others, you may be barred from entering certain roads entirely. For example, Market Jew Street restricts most vehicles from entering between 11 am and 4 pm, every day. The rules aren't currently being heavily enforced so don't be confused if you see other cars disobeying the rules. Stick to the signs and avoid any fines.
  • There are numerous scenic coastal drives you can take between Penzance and some of the UK's best seaside towns. For example, consider taking the scenic route along the Penwith Heritage Coast from Penzance to St Ives. You'll pass by the charming fishing port of Mousehole, the hazy landscapes of Morvah and Zennor, a town known for its mermaid myths, before arriving in picturesque St Ives. The drive itself takes around two hours (not counting the stops you'll make along the way). When you've finished, you can get back to Penzance in less than 20 minutes by simply taking the inland route via the A30. Penzance is also just a 10-minute drive from the ferry to the famous St Michael's Mount.
  • When driving your cheap car hire in Penzance, bear in mind that some roads can be very steep and narrow, which may pose an intimidating task for less experienced drivers. This is true both in the city itself and on the surrounding roads. Be prepared to reverse if you suddenly find yourself trying to turn onto a street that is simply too narrow for your vehicle. If you want to avoid trickier roads, consider asking locals for directions over your SatNav or phone. Online maps will usually give you the shortest route without regard for the difficulty of the roads. Locals might also know the best route for scenic views and good rest stops along the way.
  • Medium hire cars in Penzance are around 42% cheaper than other car types, on average
