If you use this company, go to the airport for the car not the one downtown.
Verified travelerAug 2024
Definitely reserve in advance. We tried to pick our car 2 days early and could not. If you really want Avis, you'll possobly get faster service with Avis Preferred status. Be sure you pick a number at the pick up counter ASAP. And then stay close by because if they skip you, you start over.
AudreyJul 2024
Go to the kiosk inside even of your email says to just go to the car pickup place after preregistering. Some of the roads are really steep and tight. Do not recommend a car in the city, but good for taking day trips out of the city to less populated places
Verified travelerJun 2024
Make sure you pay attention to which location you’re booking and if you are getting standard or automatic. Cars are SMALL here—so err on the side of a larger vehicle
Verified travelerMay 2024
You do not need a car in Lisbon itself. It is a walkable city with good public transportation. Only rent a car to leave or drive to Lisbon. Driving in Lisbon is challenging. Locals drive very fast, but they are courteous. There are many roundabouts.
Verified travelerFeb 2024
The most challenging things about driving in Lisbon are driving and parking on the narrow streets, adjusting to roundabouts if you are not familiar with them, and also most of the vehicles are manual transmission, so you will either need to make sure you're in practice, or specifically select one with an automatic transmission.
Verified travelerSept 2023
Don’t drive when in Lisbon. Use subway
NirajNov 2023
Driving in the city can be intimidating as drivers are very much on the move like any other big city.
NickOct 2023
Inside Lisbon itself is fine no different than any other large city in Europe, parking can be tricky though.
Verified travelerOct 2023
For a small airport it can get quite busy and the whole car rental business, but especially off-airport and late in the evening can easily eat 2 hours or your time. Metro station is 50 meters off the arrivals hall, easy to buy a pass, easy to get pretty much anywhere in the city, especially if combined with taxi/Bolt for the last mile. So do not rent a car if you want to save time and you don’t absolutely need it, cause it can be more hassle than it is worth.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Lisbon you do not need a car unless cisiti g the outskirts which are amazing and well worth it!! Surprise is off site of the airport and we had to uber as we could not find shuttle. Other well known rental companies are located in the airport. Do not get a manual!!! Many hills snd tight parking spaces.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Driving in Portugal is way more orderly than most of Europe. It felt much more like driving at home in the US (but without all the road rage and honking).
Verified travelerJul 2023
Look for car rentals that aren’t in the airport and that provide a shuttle to and from airport. This will save you loads of time and frustration.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Service agents at the airport were great - friendly and courteous. Wait time was a little long.
AJul 2023
Lisbon airport rental is easy to find and navigate.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Be comfortable with roundabouts Know ahead of time that there are toll booths across the county Be prepared for narrow streets
Verified travelerJul 2023
Avoid car in Lisbon. Uber there. Use rental to explore country and wine country.
LoraAug 2023
Be sure you are able to drive manual transmission on hills!
AnnetteJul 2023
Picking the car up from the city located was easy.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Only drove in and out of the city. Car navigation made that easy
Verified travelerMay 2023
Great experience. No surprise costs. Great car. Would rent from them again!

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Lisbon

  • Want the freedom of having your own car while touring Lisbon? If flying into Lisbon International Airport, you’ll find it very easy to rent a car. There are several hire car places located right inside the airport including well-known companies like Hertz, Avis, and Budget. For added convenience, the car hire desks are close to the baggage claim area.
  • After touring the city of Lisbon, you’ll definitely want to take a scenic drive along the coast. On the ride you can take in picturesque views of the water and breathtaking landscapes. If going south to Faro, you can stop at one of a few blue flag beaches for swimming, biking, hiking, or just sunbathing. You’ll also be able to experience a variety of seafood dishes at local restaurants in Sintra or Porto Covo.
  • In Lisbon there are many toll roads which can be inconvenient for drivers not familiar with the city. Plan out your route beforehand and talk with your hire car agent about whether you will need to pay tolls. If you will, you might want to consider pre-paying tolls to avoid unnecessary credit card charges.
  • Most cars in Portugal have manual transmission; therefore, this is what most hire car companies have in stock. So, if you want an automatic, you’ll want to book your hire car far in advance. Note that even if you drive a manual car at home, Lisbon can be a really hilly city with lots of twists and turns. Consequently, you might feel more comfortable with an automatic transmission. When booking your car, you’ll also want to note that renting an automatic car will cost slightly more than a car with a manual transmission.
  • When driving your cheap car hire in Lisbon, you will find there are lots of cyclists, roller skaters and moped drivers. You, therefore, need to be extra vigilant when driving around the city. There are some cycles lanes in the city, but a lot of the time bikes share the roads with cars. This means you should always consult your mirrors when turning to be sure a bike hasn’t crept up on you.
  • A good way to reduce the cost of your Lisbon car hire is to get an electric vehicle. Cars powered by electricity cost less to recharge than standard cars do to refuel, so you will notice the savings if you plan to drive for a lot of your holiday. There are hundreds of charging stations in Lisbon too, so you should be able to charge-up with ease. SIXT on Rua Andrade Corvo is one example of a car hire agency that offers this type of vehicle.
  • You can enhance your cheap car hire in Lisbon with add-ons, so that your journey goes smoother. If you’re unfamiliar with the surroundings in the city it’s a good idea to include a sat-nav, so you don’t take a wrong turn. You can also include an additional driver so that you can share you time behind the wheel. Whereas if you’re travelling with children under the age of 12, the law permits you to have a booster seat, which you can include in the car hire process.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire in Lisbon for £12 or less
  • Book your car hire in Lisbon at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Intermediate hire cars in Lisbon are around 21% cheaper than other car types, on average
