When we arrived at car rental I had to wait for a car that was much larger in size than I wanted. They weren't clear about any extra per mile fee or refill costs so I couldn't find put what to expect. They also told.me the wrong return time in Jerusalem so I ended up returning the car 20 minutes early without refilling the tank. There were also no signs in Jerusalem at the street level directing me where to find the lot for returning the car. I was luck that I didn't get a ticket for parking on the side of the street to run inside to find out where the lot entry was located.

Filthy car and terrible service
There was absolutely nothing to like about the service or the car - Budget should be embarrassed and appalled that one of its locations would send out a car as they did.
The employees don’t care at all about the customer - they cared more about closing up shop and going home than doing what was right which is simply giving me a clean car. My car was filthy - stains all over the seats - dirt all over the dashboard, used floss and dirty ear plugs left from last renter and garbage in main console. They didn’t even attempt to clean it or make it right.

That was the third time I rented a car in Tel Aviv and the first and last time I will decide to rent a car from Sixt. The woman behind the counter was unpolite and impertinent. The car I booked for 5 people was suddenly not available. Our reservation included a car, insurance and two drivers for 400 €. Suddenly the second driver was not included and she insisted we need an extra insurance so we ended up paying 670€. The car we got in the end was a sport car and she said it was an "update" although iI insisted that we dont care for a sports car we wanted a car where we will fit in with all our bags. The car seats were wet. Later we found out that happend every time in rained. It was impossible for is to use the car for 5 people and suitcases for longer trips so two of us ended up taking the train to the destinations. The woman behind the counter at Sixt ignored all my requests and just told me to take it or leave. Since it was 11pm in the night and we had our grandmother with us we took it. Worst experience ever!

Returning the car at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv is a nightmare. The Hertz return is not in the same location as the return for all the other agencies. The airport signage for Hertz is completely inadequate. Nav apps (Google maps) takes one to the wrong level. We drove around for 100 minutes (!) and literally could not find where to leave the car. This is a big problem when there is an international flight to catch.

Hertz ok but car type not good
Easy pick up and drop off at airport. The customer service person was nice and explained the insurance options.
The car was a Cleo. This car's engine stops every time the car comes to a stop at traffic lights and in stop and go traffic, then must re-start to move. This was terrible especially in Israel's hilly terrain . The insurance cost in Israel is outrageous! Credit card insurance policies will not cover rental cars there.

The stuff and service was very good, when you could reach them.
The main problem is the long wait on line to have an answer to a question. We had 2 issues:1st ,our pick up branch at Hayarkon Street in Tel Aviv, had some problems with their phones and computers,so it took is over an hour to reach someone to solve quite simple problems ( change of the pickup time, and a day later when we had a question about the payment,we were transferred from one employee to the other until someone agreed to listen (before trying to transfer the call again)and we got the answer in 30 seconds. 2. We got an excellent and the most fuel efficient car we experienced-Reno Clio-(thanks to the very nice guy at Hayarkon branch!).after 2 days of driving we noticed that the analogical fuel meter didn't even stir. We called to ask - but the very nice lady who tried very hard to help, didn't have the answer. We drove to a closest branch to us -Holon-to find that it closed down 3 years ago (why nobody bother to update your Google sites??). Than, since no one could explain what happens,we drove to Rishon Le Zyyon , an extremely busy location,no parking at all, where the local guy in 5 minutes explained the efficiency of the car,how the meter works,-and was very surprised that no one could explain it to us over the phone, and save us 1.5 hour and worry. Can you please, guys, train your phone center stuff a little bit in basic mechanics of the cars you rent out?

In spite of multiple phone call to AVIS Israel issue has not been resolved during 30 days of stay. At checkout, supervisor promised to take care of it. Still waiting..
Provide honest and transparent quote online including ALL costs and show the options, especially for insurance, will make the booking process easier and save aggravation later on. Show all the taxes and mandatory costs. Sugar coating the price online … then sticker shock at the counter doesn't work

Staff was friendly, everything went as planned. They said they did not have car size I reserve, so they offered to upgrade to larger car. After my refusal, they found correct size in seconds. Not sure how to consider this process. They just could offer an upgrade without pressure.
Tires were significantly underinflated which affected handling, comfort and likely gas mileage. Had to find gas station along my route to pump them to correct pressure. I tried three gas stations until found the one that had working pump. They could check car before renting out.

At the pickup desk I found out that instead of $329 it'll cost me $752. Why? hidden charges. Two type of un-mentioned insurances and another airport fee. Ignorant and rude staff
The car was clean and worked well. The car return was quick.
The person who served us was new to his job and was clueless. He made numerous mistakes, which took forever to converge. Moreover, when we asked to talk to his supervisor, the supervisor was rude, nasty, and suggested that we leave without renting the car. In our 40+ years of renting cars we have never experienced this kind of behavior. Adding to this incompetence and rudeness, they both charged our credit card way more than is normally done, namely more than $5,000, in case we’ll have damage to the car. We will never rent with this company and we’ll tell all our family, friends and colleagues about our terrible experience with this car rental company.

Proof of competence when things need to be adjusted
The car which was a large Fiat was good except that the front fender was loose when the car was given to me. It got looser as the trip went on and I finally called to get a replacement car. Eldan, the agency that represents Alamo, was very good at replacing the car but their main Jerusalem office was all but closed because of the visit by Vice President Pence. Their representative Sarah at headquarters steered us to a smaller office nearby in Givan Shaul, but they didn't have a lot of cars. We got a large dirty 4 wheel drive Diesel Dacia when we indicated to the manager David that we could drive a manual shift. Adriel, the manager of the downtown branch who was in Givan Shaul because he couldn't get to the office either because of Pence, said that we could return the Dacia to him downtown in two days and get the exact same type of car that we had had before but with an attached fender. We did that and the Eldan team was good to their word. At all times, everyone on the Eldan team, was courteous and resourceful at getting our problems solved. It's not how you react when situations are simple that tests the mettle of an organization, but how you react when there is a problem. The Eldan team was great. I would use them again.
Because of all of the confusion, as described in the what went right section at left, I was charged for a fillup of gas. When I got the Dacia in the Givan Shaul office, because of the confusion, I was given the car with a partially filled tank of gas. I returned the car with the same partially filled tank of gas as well. I was charged for the partial fillup. I will have to call Eldan in Israel to get that charge removed. I do feel that they will do this because of the treatment I have received from them to date.

Original navigation system in the car had some issues. Also, mirrors wouldn't automatically open after I would start the car. Pls, note that the rate doesn't include the mandatory insurance

Dacia "automatic"transmission was like riding a bucking bronco
The manager at Ben Gurion airport for Eldan rentals, the presumed local Alamo affiliate, was very nice.
I had reserved 2 infant car seats but upon arrival the 2 car seats presented to us were filthy and worse, had no restraining straps. The manager was nice and apologized and offered us an "upgraded" rental, which turned out to be the Dacia. The transmission on the Dacia was the worst on any car that I've driven. It was rough, sluggish, jerked and at times made us feel as if we were in a rodeo riding a bucking bronco. There is no Park setting on this transmission, only Drive, Neutral and Reverse, so that when parking or waiting at a traffic light on an incline, the parking brake must be utilized. I don't know if the Dacia that we received was a lemon, or whether our experience is characteristic.

Easy pick up in Tel Aviv
You must take some of their insurance even if you have your own through your credit card and car insurance. This added about $100 to cost.

Top tips for hiring a car in Tel Aviv

  • Book a hire car when going on a trip to the second most populous city in Israel to be able to explore every corner of Tel Aviv. With a hire car, travelers can enjoy the wonderful beaches of the city but also drive into Jerusalem, which is just over an hour’s drive away.
  • Ben Gurion Airport is 15 miles from Tel Aviv’s center, so the easiest way is to rent a car directly at the airport and drive into the center in under half an hour via Route 1. All hire car desks are located in the arrivals hall on the first floor and cars from companies like Avis, Hertz, and Europcar can be rented, among some others. Note that an international driver’s license is required.
  • Driving in Israel is generally not an intimidating affair and most street signs are trilingual in English, Hebrew, and Arabic. Honking is pretty common in Tel Aviv and drivers will use it more frequently, often to show their annoyance or impatience. It is advised to remain in the right lane if driving under the speed limit, and changing lanes may require a bit more aggressive driving behavior than travelers are used to from home.
  • Using a mobile phone during driving is an absolute no-go in Tel Aviv, even if stopped at a red traffic light. Many accidents in the city are caused by people using mobile phones, and people are fined accordingly high for this -- so refrain from using your mobile phone and, if you need navigation, either ask a fellow passenger to help you or pay a little extra for a satnav holder. As traffic increases dramatically during rush hours (which are from Sunday to Thursday from 7-10 am and 4:30-6:30 pm), high attention to the road is recommended.

  • Since the city can be bursting with traffic during rush hour, changing lanes can be a challenge, and parking spots are hard to get by, opting for a compact car is a good choice. A smaller car will also cost less and won’t need as much gas.

  • Speed limit signs are given in kilometers per hour. Urban areas allow up to 50 km/h (31 mph), and 80-90 km/h (49-55 mph) is permitted on intercity roads. On highways, drivers can speed up to 100-110 km/h (62-68 mph). Speed cameras are also common in Israel, so adhering to the speed limit is important.

  • A refill in Israel will cost about 6.69 Israeli new shekel per liter ($1.79 per ¼ gallon, or $7.16 per gallon). Almost all petrol stations ask for the same price, so it is not necessary to hunt down the cheapest places to refill the tank. When opting for self-service, the price can be marginally cheaper. Usually all major credit cards are accepted.

  • Parking in Tel Aviv can be a challenge, so familiarize yourself with the color-coded parking areas beforehand. Red signifies parking is not permitted and blue or white means it is a metered parking area. Many on-street parking spots are also reserved for locals, so it’s probably better to opt for a parking lot or parking garage instead, like the Dizengoff Center parking lot or Suzanne Dellal Parking. In Reading in the north of Tel Aviv, there is a free parking lot from which buses can be taken into the center.
