Tel Aviv car hire experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travellers who hired a car in Tel Aviv

Finding gas station near rental return is difficult. Plan ahead
RavitOct 2023
Call the company and ask for prices breakdown before you rent online
Verified travelerOct 2023
In Jerusalem on the street we stayed on, we got a parking ticket because we did not have the appropriate sticker which allowed us to park. It would have been helpful to know about this and to know about ways to get a temporary sticker. If there was a sign, I did not see it or could not read the Hebrew so I ignored it.
Verified travelerJun 2023
You don’t need a car in Tel Aviv - but it is wonderful to have a car once you leave the city. Traffic patterns take some getting used to.
Verified travelerAug 2023
driving is fine, as long as you keep awareness of your surroundings (e-bikes and e-scooters will cut you off frequently, and will ignore stop signs). Parking is more of a problem on many streets, as they are for residents only at night. You'll need to find a private lot to park at overnight. Use the Israeli Pango app (not the international one) for paying for parking.

Best experience ever. As good as service in the US. Highly recommend.

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Tel Aviv

  • Book a hire car when going on a trip to the second most populous city in Israel to be able to explore every corner of Tel Aviv. With a hire car, travelers can enjoy the wonderful beaches of the city but also drive into Jerusalem, which is just over an hour’s drive away.
  • Ben Gurion Airport is 15 miles from Tel Aviv’s center, so the easiest way is to rent a car directly at the airport and drive into the center in under half an hour via Route 1. All hire car desks are located in the arrivals hall on the first floor and cars from companies like Avis, Hertz, and Europcar can be rented, among some others. Note that an international driver’s license is required.
  • Driving in Israel is generally not an intimidating affair and most street signs are trilingual in English, Hebrew, and Arabic. Honking is pretty common in Tel Aviv and drivers will use it more frequently, often to show their annoyance or impatience. It is advised to remain in the right lane if driving under the speed limit, and changing lanes may require a bit more aggressive driving behavior than travelers are used to from home.
  • Using a mobile phone during driving is an absolute no-go in Tel Aviv, even if stopped at a red traffic light. Many accidents in the city are caused by people using mobile phones, and people are fined accordingly high for this -- so refrain from using your mobile phone and, if you need navigation, either ask a fellow passenger to help you or pay a little extra for a satnav holder. As traffic increases dramatically during rush hours (which are from Sunday to Thursday from 7-10 am and 4:30-6:30 pm), high attention to the road is recommended.
  • Once you have made the decision to book cheap car hire in Tel Aviv, you can start to plan your journey in advance to explore the city and remote surroundings. The travel distances in Israel are manageable, allowing you to travel to far destinations in a day or two. You can reach the port town of Acra in around 2 hours, or travel further from here to the famous Sea of Galilee, a freshwater lake in Israel, in around 1h 30min.
  • The most important thing when using Tel Aviv car hire is safety. Keep in mind that the roads of Tel Aviv are not only heavily congested with cars but there is a large amount of motorbikes and electric scooters on the roads. It is very important to keep an eye out for any bikes that might weave their way into your blind spot, so take extreme caution and make sure you scan all sides of the road when driving.
  • The roads in Tel Aviv and Israel are generally of very high standard. The only unpaved, dirt roads you encounter are further out of the city on side roads in areas like Timna Park, Red Canyon and Makhtesh Canyon. Having said that, even these roads are navigable in a small two-wheel drive car. If you do drive out on these desert roads, pay special attention and watch out for roaming camels and the odd pothole. You may want to make sure your car has air conditioning for a more comfortable journey.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire in Tel Aviv for £27 or less
  • Book your car hire in Tel Aviv at least 3 days before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Standard hire cars in Tel Aviv are around 14% more expensive than other car types, on average

FAQs about car hire in Tel Aviv

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Tel Aviv?

Since the city can be bursting with traffic during rush hour, changing lanes can be a challenge, and parking spots are hard to get by, opting for a compact car is a good choice. A smaller car will also cost less and won’t need as much gas.

  • What’s the speed limit in Tel Aviv?

Speed limit signs are given in kilometers per hour. Urban areas allow up to 50 km/h (31 mph), and 80-90 km/h (49-55 mph) is permitted on intercity roads. On highways, drivers can speed up to 100-110 km/h (62-68 mph). Speed cameras are also common in Israel, so adhering to the speed limit is important.

  • Where are the best places to park in Tel Aviv?

Parking in Tel Aviv can be a challenge, so familiarize yourself with the color-coded parking areas beforehand. Red signifies parking is not permitted and blue or white means it is a metered parking area. Many on-street parking spots are also reserved for locals, so it’s probably better to opt for a parking lot or parking garage instead, like the Dizengoff Center parking lot or Suzanne Dellal Parking. In Reading in the north of Tel Aviv, there is a free parking lot from which buses can be taken into the center.

  • How much does it cost to hire a car in Tel Aviv?

On average a car hire in Tel Aviv costs £32 per day.

  • What is the cheapest car hire company in Tel Aviv?

  • What is the best car hire company in Tel Aviv?

Based on ratings and reviews from real users on KAYAK, the best car hire in Tel Aviv is Hertz (6.4, 53 reviews).

  • How much is the price of fuel in Tel Aviv?

The average price of fuel in Tel Aviv is £5.99 per litre over the past 30 days. Filling up a tank of fuel costs between £72 and £96, depending on the car size.

  • What is the most popular car hire in Tel Aviv?

Standard (Chevrolet Trailblazer or similar) is the most frequently booked car hire type in Tel Aviv.

  • Which car hire agencies are at Ben Gurion Intl airport (TLV)?

Car hire companies onsite at Ben Gurion Intl airport include Budget, Hertz, Europcar, Alamo, Dollar, Thrifty, Avis and Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

  • Which car hire companies will pick you up at Ben Gurion Intl airport (TLV)?

  • How much does a car hire in Tel Aviv cost for a month?

  • Should I get insurance when hiring a car in Tel Aviv?

Most car hire providers in Tel Aviv offer insurance but the level of protection can differ substantially. If you're unsure whether to get extra protection for your car hire in Tel Aviv, check out KAYAK's car hire insurance guide.

  • In what languages are the road signs in Tel Aviv?

All the road signs in Tel Aviv are in Hebrew, Arabic and English, so you should have no issues with following the right routes if you speak one of these languages. If you are unsure, you can use your GPS system or an online navigation app. Sometimes the speed limits are not well signposted, but if you use a navigation system, this should give you the correct speed to avoid traffic fines.

  • If I am driving on a long day trip out of the city, what shops are there to stock up on water and supplies?

If you are planning a day trip using cheap car hire in Tel Aviv to any of the desert destinations, do yourself a favour and plan ahead by packing a cold cooler bag for the day. It should be stocked with ice and refreshments, as there generally aren’t regular stops for stocking up in these remote destinations.

I did not take the car because insurance was more than the daily rental of $36 a day. After a long flight it is disturbing to calculate extra unknown costs which either r unbearable or block your credit card w a high fee even if have cc insurance. This should be sorted out when booking. Felt like ordering sushi n it says market price of the day.

The car I received was very used and poorly equipped. Over 109,000 km on it. No cruise control, no apple or Android auto. Basic features in even entry level cars. Pros:

The car was a hybrid in a country where gas is very expensive. I appreciated that. Too bad the hybrid had to come after the first car that had issues. One of them being a faulty tire immediately when I drove off the lot.

Cons:

Their service. They treated me like I popped the tire and didn’t want to pay. I drove off the lot and the tire lost air immediately. Ridiculous.

Car hire insurance in Tel Aviv

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) & Theft Protection Waiver

Some Tel Aviv car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Tel Aviv.

Deductible

Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Tel Aviv car hire.
