The cathedral, the old town and the lively market square are all a short walk away, with the hills of the Black Forest rising just beyond the city. Tram stops sit close to the door. Freiburg is the sunny capital of the Black Forest, a green university city famous for its mild climate and environmental spirit. Little water-filled runnels called Bächle trickle along the cobbled lanes, the red-sandstone minster soars above a daily market of regional produce, and students fill the cafés and squares of the old centre with life. Forest trails and vineyard hills climb straight from the edge of town.
