Growing up in the New Forest, Weymouth was one of my closest seaside towns. I love its long stretch of sandy beach, shallow swimming waters and surrounding UNESCO World Heritage coastline. Nowadays it’s a surprisingly bohemian town, set in the rather conservative county of Dorset. For me, a large part of its charm comes from the picturesque 17th-century harbour and marina, which is the perfect spot for waterside dining and historic pubs. Here you can enjoy traditional fish and chips or, for a real-treat, Catch is the town’s Michelin-starred fine dining seafood restaurant. For a beachfront spot, locals head to the Crab House Café. Some of the best hotels in Weymouth are along the town’s esplanade, with Georgian terraced houses overlooking the main beach. For those who prefer to be immersed in nature, consider staying on the Isle of Portland, or in the nearby countryside hotels. Here’s my pick of the best hotels to stay in Weymouth.

1.

Moonfleet Manor

Address:

Fleet Road

Price:

£146-£561/night

This family-friendly – or, rather, family-focused – hotel goes out of its way to keep kids entertained. It’s one of my favourite luxury hotels in Weymouth for the quality of its in-house facilities and its rural location on the South West Coast Path. Child-friendly offerings include a kids’ club with two hours of free childcare each day.

I love fossil hunting on the nearby beaches. On rainy days, kids are kept busy in the Verandah Hub, an indoor space with a climbing wall, trampolines and mini-golf. Undoubtedly, this is one of the best hotels in Weymouth for families.

A former historic home with over 400 years of history, an extensive refurbishment in 2023 has given its 36 luxurious guestrooms a fresh feel. There’s a heated indoor pool, sauna and spa, as well as a mind-blowing number of dog-focused amenities, including an ‘a la bark’ menu, dog wash station and waggy tails tea.

2.

No. 98 Boutique Hotel

Address:

98 The Esplanade

Price:

£118-£202/night

A seaside classic, this contemporary owner-run boutique hotel is on the esplanade overlooking the beach. I love the design and architecture of this nine-bedroom townhouse, which is packed with all the charm of a listed building.

The bright rooms are decorated in a fresh Mediterranean style – five of them are sea-facing, the others overlook a courtyard garden. The colour scheme meanwhile is an uplifting blue and white, complete with white wood panelling on the walls, large windows and wooden shutters. The Deluxe King Room is my favourite thanks to its large windows and views over Weymouth Bay.

I love the location, with everything on your doorstep – cross over the road and you’re on the main beach. Having breakfast cooked to order each day is a nice personal touch from the owner.

3.

Chapter 1 Hotels

Address:

68 The Esplanade

Price:

£126-£300/night

This Grade II-listed Georgian hotel has 25 contemporary guestrooms spread out over seven floors. One of the best hotels in Weymouth, I love how it stands out from the town’s other Georgian-style houses with its quirky interiors and playful style – all of which reflect the owner’s personality and storytelling vision.

It was recently refurbished, so the accommodation is now bright and luxurious. Choose from beach or city view rooms decorated in a soothing Farrow and Ball colour palette of beige and soft grey walls. You’ll also find pops of colour in the bedheads, soft furnishings and artworks. Other touches include rainhead showers and an Italian breakfast of pastries and fresh-brewed coffee.

This is one of the best hotels in Weymouth for couples, as it doesn’t allow children under eight years of age. It’s also within easy walking distance of the beach, town centre shops and harbour eateries.

4.

Gloucester House

Address:

96 The Esplanade

Price:

£76-£300/night

This award-winning hotel, set in a charming Georgian terrace townhouse dating back to the 1790s, has a prime location on the beachfront. I love the original features, such as cornices and lattice windows overlooking the esplanade and Weymouth Bay.

The 14 bedrooms were refurbished in 2019, and you can choose from Twin, Double, Triple, Quad and Allergy-free rooms. If you can, I recommend going for one of the sea-view rooms with a balcony. There’s a chic neutral colour scheme throughout and I really love the soft grey, mustard yellow and fresh white combo.

One of the best hotels in Weymouth, don’t miss their award-winning and much-loved Dorset breakfasts. For other meals, it’s a short walk to restaurants in town and the hosts are super helpful and happy to make recommendations.

5.

The Smugglers Inn

Address:

Osmington Mills

Price:

£78-£161/night

This is one of the best hotels in Weymouth if you’re looking for a countryside escape just a 15-minute drive from town. It’s close enough that you can dip in and out of the town’s hubbub while still feeling peacefully removed. Enjoy the tranquil location of this former smugglers' den, which is nestled in a small cove – great for fossil hunting.

The 13th-century inn is packed with history and has retained a lot of its original features, making this one of the most unique hotels in Weymouth. I particularly love the stone walls, low wooden-beamed ceilings and, in winter, roaring log fires.

The four double guestrooms are simply decorated, with wood-panelled walls and a seaside-inspired blue and white colour palette. The popular on-site restaurant serves British pub grub, including pies, fish, burgers and local ales.

6.

The Roundhouse

Address:

1 The Esplanade

Price:

£102-£152/night

The first thing that struck me about The Roundhouse is its unique architectural design. As the name suggests, it’s a roundhouse – a tall, narrow, circular Georgian building resembling a terraced lighthouse that boasts a prime location at the harbour end of the esplanade. Dating back to 1812, this historic former home has housed aristocracy and royalty over the decades.

The individually appointed rooms are set over three floors – each one is large and bright, with latticed windows. I love the dual aspect windows; one facing the busy working harbour, the other towards Weymouth Bay. Go for a room with a window-facing sofa, the perfect place to sit and soak up the view.

7.

Birch House B&B

Address:

31 Icen Road

Price:

£72-£145/night

This is one of the best hotels in Weymouth for those who like to be a little out of town. For me, this adults-only option is great when you’re travelling without kids or coming outside the peak summer months. A family home that was converted into a stylish B&B in 2011, I could easily spend an afternoon relaxing in their pretty gardens or in the comfortable lounge area with a log burner for winter.

The contemporary rooms are cosy with king-size beds. Friendly, welcoming hosts are on hand to create a relaxing home-from-home experience and a Full English breakfast is served family-style around the table inside or outside in the garden – weather permitting.

The B&B is in a quiet residential area, two miles from the town centre. A bus stop close by takes you into town in 20 minutes, if you prefer that to navigating town centre parking.

8.

St John's Guest House

Address:

7 Dorchester Road

Price:

£97-£173/night

St John’s Guest House is on the seafront in a quiet neighbourhood, just a 10-minute walk from town. I love the property’s style, a Victorian house built around 1880, with original features such as high ceilings and characterful tiling on the porch. With a day’s notice, an indulgent afternoon tea can be prepared for you and served in the bright dining room.

This is one of the best hotels in Weymouth if you’re looking for a peaceful spot run by experienced hosts. Choose from Double, Twin, Triple and Quad rooms – plus, there are two Family rooms for families with children over six years of age. The hotel can also be booked for exclusive use, sleeping up to 15 people. If you’re driving, it’s worth noting there’s free parking on site for up to six cars.

9.

Gresham Guest House

Address:

120 The Esplanade

Price:

£68-£143/night

This recently refurbished townhouse was built in 1827. Originally a gentleman’s residence, nowadays it’s an elegant period building with modern amenities. It’s set in a great location on the seafront esplanade, just a five-minute walk from Weymouth station.

The 12 bedrooms are spread over six floors, and there’s no lift (worth bearing in mind if anyone in your travel party has mobility issues). Choose from Single, Double, Twin and Family rooms that sleep up to five, all either en-suite or with private bathrooms. Four have sea views with large sash windows. I love the bright interiors, quirky lighting, floral patterns and fresh pastel colours.

This one of the best hotels in Weymouth if you’re looking to unwind, as relaxation is actively encouraged. Take breakfast in bed if you fancy; afternoon tea too. Enjoy the views with a coffee, or sit with a book in one of their cosy corners.

10.

Hotel Rex

Address:

29 The Esplanade

Price:

£49-£170/night

Hotel Rex was originally built as a summer residence for the Duke of Clarence. It’s one of the best hotels in Weymouth for those who will appreciate its elegant Georgian facade, former grandeur and professional service. The hotel is part of the King’s Hotels Weymouth group, who have over 50 years’ experience in the town’s hospitality industry.

Nowadays, the 31 guestrooms have blended this Georgian character with contemporary touches. I highly recommend booking one of the bedrooms with a balcony, which are delightful.

I love the location, right on the harbour end of the esplanade, a few steps from the beach and the harbour. It’s worth noting that unlike many of the town’s hotels, Hotel Rex has a lift which serves all floors.

There’s also The Rex restaurant, which offers a la carte dining. Plus, you’re a stone’s throw from Catch at The Old Fish Market, Weymouth's Michelin-starred restaurant.
