9.3 Excellent (781 reviews)

7.1 Good
Pros: The tranquillity & privacy of the resort. Food is delicious. Room is spacious and renovated (way better than the published photos). They provided umbrellas and insect spray in the room. It is noted that none of the in house guests were smoking around the resort compound which is good. Most staffs provided excellent hospitality except for one in f&b. Generally, it was a pleasant stay. Highly recommended and would come back again.
Cons: We booked double bed but the resort merged two single beds. Its uncomfortable sleeping on uneven surface.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The surroundings are spectacular, really feel like you are in the heart of the jungle. The chalets are very spacious and so comfortable. So relaxing going to sleep with the sound of nature outside. We had a little orangutan visit us as well, which was very special. Reception staff were incredibly helpful. We did the night walk that the hotel offers as well which was very exciting, saw lots of wildlife and the guides were so knowledgable. Right next door to orangutan and sun bears sanctuary’s. Highly recommend!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff amazingly kind. Rooms were exquisitely beautiful, like African safari luxury bungalows. Being next door to the orangutans made it a pleasant walk go see them in the morning and afternoon. Restaurant and bar on the lake were lovely. Food was excellent! Finally, the jungle night walk was well worth it! We saw a huge snake, hornbills, frogs and enjoyed the night sounds!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff are very friendly and helpful. The location is awesome, a 5 minute walk to the Orangutan and Sun Bear Conservation centres. The communal area for drinking/dining/chilling is great. I would recommend anyone to stay here. The food is also amazing
Cons: The only issue was that the AC in our room was broken, so we had to move rooms after we had already unpacked everything.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great staff, restaurant and location. Lovely setting - very peaceful. Would recommend.
Cons: N/A
8.3 Excellent
Pros: It is a pity that such a wonderful setting, great villas and fantastic vibe is spoilt by the whole dining experience. High prices yet nothing to justify them... Microwaved food for dinner, microwaved croissaints (I know you buy them ready made, but they are meant to be baked in the oven, you know?) and a handful of cornflakes for breakfast, instant milkashakes disguised in fancy jars... There is a huuuge room for improvement with regards to food. And the hotel itself is not the cheapest, so one can expect more from such a place.
Cons: The breakfast which is not included in the price is too expensive for what it offers considering the local prices, same goes with the dinner which was pretty expensive and yet it arrived in less than 5 minutes - microwaved "grilled" fish, anyone? The staff confused our orders and seemed to be uncomfortable with our complaints, which made us uncomfortable with pointing out their mistake. The "croissant" was a microwaved bun, no resemblance to the actual thing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We booked last minute to stay in a double room and were pleasantly surprised by the amazing chalet. It was massive with a lounge area, separate bath area, large double bed, a hammock and a huge shower and toilet. It was luxury in the jungle! Not much option on food in the area so we ate at the resort for breakfast and dinner which was tasty, although a bit pricey compared to other restaurants. Only a couple minute walk to the orangutang and sun bear sanctuaries which were also great. Friendly and attentive staff with a lovely lake side view.

Featured amenities include a business center, dry cleaning/laundry services, and luggage storage. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available 24 hours), and free self parking is available onsite.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Lovely relaxed place to stay, everything was spotless with attractive well-maintained grounds. Outdoor shower a nice feature together with veranda. Close to all the highlights of a stay in Sepilok. Having an on site restaurant was great. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Cons: nothing to put here
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The whole resort has a very tidy and beautiful atmosphere to it. The beds are really comfortable and breakfast has a good variety (toast, jam, fruit, scrambled egg, different drinks). If you don’t appreciate animals on a facility, you should consider that there are quite a lot of cats and dogs walking around. But to me they seemed very peaceful and one of the cute cats was very into cuddling. Loved that!
Cons: Curtains in the bunk beds for some additional privacy would be nice. For me personally, the distance to the Orang Utan Reservate was alright, but if you look for a place as close as possible, there are other resorts that are closer.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean and well presented facility. Friendly and helpful staff.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I like the quietness. It was nearby the attractions of sepilok. Lovely breakfast included
Cons: The only thing I did not like was the ants underneath my matrass
6.0 Good
Pros: Location is great if you wish to walk to the centers around. Staff was helpful and kind, beds were comfy and clean... value for money, however not encouraging to stay more than 2 days due to lack of activities...
Cons: Where to start... Boring breakfast, no wifi in the room, bathroom is dirty both human and animal related stains, open sewage in the bathroom, very limited soundproofing, badly liking AC, construction on site, no rails on stairs...
7.0 Good
Pros: We stayed in a private room with our own little outdoor jungle bathroom which was great - the shower is probably the best shower I had during my entire trip to Sabah! The room was basic, but the bed was comfortable and its all we needed for one night. Great little shop onsite which sold everything we needed (snacks, beer and playing cards!) Breakfast had a decent selection - nothing amazing but certainly not bad. Staff were really friendly and helpful plus they had the friendliest cats and dogs.
Cons: There was some building work going on in front of the room we stayed in, not a problem in the evening but we were woken up at around 6:30 am by the workers making noise.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very big comfortable rooms. With no WiFi and NOTHING nearby, so a TV would be nice. Restaurant reviews weren't great but I found the food was pretty good. Staff always smiling and helpful.
Cons: Check the additional taxes before booking! Showed 170 Ringgit but after taxes was actually 190!! Outside bathroom is quirky but the view from the bathroom is not nice. Walled in, roofed courtyard! WiFi only in reception, not in rooms or restaurant.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly and nice staff. The breakfast it’s amazing !!
7.9 Good
Pros: Rooms are big and comfortable, nice outdoor shower, water provided.
Cons: They didn’t clean the room, dinner starts at 19.00 and that is a bit late in the tropics, breakfast is mediocre.

9.7 Excellent
Pros: Pool was amazing! We stayed out there for ages ordering drinks and relaxing as the rest of our stay was really hectic with tours and treks. Room facing onto the sea had an amazing view and the bathroom had a window opening onto the view also Breakfast was the best we had I Asia in 3 weeks!
Cons: Not enough sun loungers. Only about 16 for a hotel with hundreds of rooms
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location and staff
7.1 Good
Pros: Let’s start with the positives - a lovely infinity pool on the 13th floor, a small But well equipped gym, lovely big rooms with great views of the ocean, pleasant check-in staff and it doesn’t break the bank. Comfy bed too.
Cons: Lots about this place let it down from being a 4 star experience. -we had to ring up for loo roll as they’d left us with about 1/3 of the one from the previous occupants (with no spare) and then had to call again for handsoap as we realised only shower gel was there when we arrived -no hand towels in the bathroom (this is an expectation across the board now surely?) -cupboard doors on the tv unit were half falling off in the room and required a complicated technique to close! -uncooked boiled egg in the breakfast buffet. My partner cracked it open and loads of uncooked egg white spilled out on to her toast. Thankfully she didn’t eat it. -the pool is lovely when it’s quiet. Most of the time we were there it was being used by kids who were flouting every rule - diving, yelling and shooting water guns - and nobody from the hotel intervened to ask their parents to tell them to consider any other pool users. -Pool towels smelt a bit funky. It’s a fine hotel for a quick stopover if you’re on your way in or out of the rainforest or here on business, but don’t expect it to be a luxury Sheraton experience. I think if I was head office I’d be having a word... It’s still Sandakan’s best hotel mind!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The view
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Just everything
Cons: Perfect
7.9 Good
Pros: Comfy beds, friendly concierge staff.
Cons: Old food on the room floor - looked like rice. Sheets covered in orange stains. Tiles at door covered in dirt. Shower mouldy. Staff at reception not efficient - waited a long time to check out then desk staff let the guy behind us in the queue shove in and skip us. Absolutely nothing to do in Sandakan other than truffle island - stay in Sepilok instead.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Clean showers and toilet and never had to queue. Good and quiet AC. Comfortable room. Good breakfast.
Cons: The WiFi didn't work while we were there. There was also an issue with the water (but I think if affected the whole street so not really their fault). Also the pillows are memory foam ones which aren't my favourite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great, I think that this is definitely the place to stay in Sandakan! You will not be disappointed.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hostel is in the city center (right next to waterfront mall) and it is a totally amazing place. It was very cheap but even though the rooms are very huge, spotlessly clean and well taken care of. They even provide a basic breakfast. I couldn´t ask more for a paid price
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast (fruit, bread and spreads, hot beverages) and location were excellent.
Cons: Shared bathroom, but that is all they are able to offer hence it's a hostel.
7.5 Good
Pros: Good location friendly staff.
Cons: One of the staff always slept in the reception room, if you were an early riser you couldn’t sit on the sofa to watch a movie.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We had a lovely stay at borneo sandakan backpackers. We initially booked 2 nights but extended and were even given the online price for our extension which was generous. The beds were comfy and the facilities were great, and we even made use of a tiny bit of fridge space, a rarity for Borneo.
Cons: The room was big, which of course is great but it felt a little bare. It’s hardly a criticism but it’s the only thing that could be better I guess. Everything about our stay was fantastic and the staff are super helpful and friendly!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location. Staff. Value for money
Cons: Nothing

7.5 Good
Pros: -location in the nature - Restaurant with nice food - Not far away from Orang Utan and Sun Bear Rehabilitation Center and the Rainforest. - because of low saison we had the dorm for us alone
Cons: -Toilets and showers with alive and dead animals - Beds also covered with some dead animals
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room came with clean flushing toilet and warm shower. The bed was comfortable and the room was air conditioned. Very rustic feel but with all the facilities.
6.7 Good
Pros: Peace
Cons: Price per person compare to other hotels rm50 i can sleep with two person.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This place is as jungle as it gets! Breathtaking views, rustic and authentic. It’s set in the most beautiful and peaceful location. One of the highlights of my trip staying here. The staff are so friendly as well and helped me booked my trips and they also provide a free lift and back to the wildlife centres 5 mins down the road. The wooden lodge I stayed in was comfy and clean and the outdoor shower was a bonus! Food was ace! Just make sure you have enough cash before you come as there’s no atm or card machine.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff were very friendly and helpful and made sure that our stay was memorable. The huts are comfortable with mosquito nets and open air en suite. Food was delicious and very good value. Thoroughly recommend.

Featured amenities include a computer station, complimentary newspapers in the lobby, and luggage storage. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available 24 hours).
9.6 Excellent
Pros: First things first, the group we had was amazing. We made such great friends that made the whole thing 10x better. The rooms were surprisingly comfortable, the food was excellent and the whole vibe of the place was great. The safari itself was also great. We saw 3 orangutans!! Which is apparently super rare. We also saw a crocodile and about 500 monkeys. The night walk for birds was also sick. We didn’t see elephants though :/. But the orangutans made it all worth it. Mohammed is a very nice guy
Cons: The boots/binoculars flashlight should really be included in the price. That’s kind of what we are paying for here. The binoculars shouldn’t be rented FYI not very good quality. My only real complaint about the tour is you only have 1 full day to do safari and there was about a 4-5 hour period in the middle of the Day with nothing planned. Also they canceled they 2nd night walk for “wind” but there was literally no wind so we did our own tour without the lodge
7.0 Good
Pros: Going on the river boat cruises and seeing all the wikdlife
Cons: Unfortunately the electric was turned off during the day which meant no water and no air con, with humidity at 80% it was very uncomfortable. A bucket of water was asked for but in never appeared.
7.1 Good
Pros: We loved our boat guy Omar showing us all the animals on the river cruises.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: One of our highlights in Malaysia - Smooth pick up from our hotel in Sandakan and 2 hour transfer to lodge. Very clean cabins and decent food. All was very organized when we arrived we had a greeting and outline of the plans for the days. For a small fee you can rent wellies torches and binoculars there is also a small shop to buy chips, beer and soft drinks. Wine is available but super expensive. The sightseeing program (all included for us) was really good. Early morning boat cruise for 1 hour then breakfast. A 1 hour hike then lunch. free time until 4pm boat cruise for 2 hours. 7pm was dinner and 8pm was the night walk. We very much enjoyed all the activities. we stayed for 3 nights and felt the last day the information on the 2 walks was repetitive. We were very lucky we saw elephant, big croc, all the monkeys, a bearded pig many hornbills and birds it was great. I would highly recommend Nature Lodge Kinabatagan.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very well organised Meals good - rice and curry for lunch and dinner Ac in dorms as well as chalets Brilliant guides and staff
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is an authentic jungle lodge. There will be bugs flying around! Great staff- river guides extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Very good value for what you get!! Food, river trips, jungle walks, pick up...
Cons: No WiFi but this is also quite nice.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Overall lovely staff, very comfy beds, good food and atmosphere.
Cons: The bathrooms didn't have toilet paper for over a day until I told the lady . They weren't particularly clean. Our guide barely took time during the night walks to try to spot any animals or insects. A bit longer would have been required to get to see more animals and insects.
7.9 Good
Pros: We stayed in one of their chalets and it was more comfortable than expected. AC worked very well, hot showers, spacious bath room. Staff were super nice, food tasty. Saw lot's of proboscis monkeys and even two Orang-Utan (from far away). Enjoyed their hammocks.
Cons: Staying there did not really feel like being in the jungle. There are lots of palm oil plantations very close. There wasn't much to do during the day. Optional offers were different from those described when we were booking and not really interesting. Would have appreciated more information about the wildlife in the area.

Pros: Set in the rainforest with lots of birds and nature all around. Nice rooms with lovely balcony view with good privacy. Peanut butter toast my fav at breakfast
Cons: Needs a sign on the gate/ fence that you drive up through.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was great, pool is small but great for a dip. Staff are lovely. Not too far from the orang utans and sun bears - about 10 mins but very warm walking. Taxis around if needed. Restaurant food is delicious.
Cons: Fans but no air con. Bathrooms basic. Otherwise quite nice.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: - Really nice place - Amazing breakfast (fruits, cereals, eggs, toasts with jam or butter, noodles,... - it doesn't matter what you eat normally for breakfast, you have!) - Small but nice swimming pool - Really good localisation: close to everything (10' to Sun bear and Ouran outans reserve, 20' to the Forest reserve...)
Cons: Nothing, absolutely nothing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very nice hotel with a beautiful garden and restaurant area. Even if you "only" stay in the dorm room you are allowed to use the pool and everything else. Very good breakfast as well. Only 10 minutes walk to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Good value for Money!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really helpful staff
9.2 Excellent
Pros: It exceeded our expectations - the cabin was beautiful, comfortable and clean. The outdoor shower (in addition to the indoor one) was a lovely surprise. The staff were also so helpful and friendly and the breakfast was excellent. Couldn’t recommend this place more!
Cons: The restaurant had good food but the portions were small and it was really overpriced. It felt like a bit of a shame with everything else being so good.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing staff, awesome location, huge swimming pool.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I really didn’t want to leave this place! Loved everything about it. Pool was great, excellent location for the sanctuaries, in the heart of the jungle, good food and drinks, the owners were so friendly as well. The views walking around the resort are absolutely breathtaking! Nicest place I’ve ever stayed. Thanks so much :-)
Cons: Nothing
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The resort itself is great, it spans across a couple of lakes and everything is joined up by bridges, its very pretty. We booked a standard room with air-con, it was pretty basic but the beds were comfortable and it was fine for one night. The swimming pool was the perfect place to relax after we'd spent 3 very humid days in the jungle. Breakfast was very good, 3 options were offered on a set menu and large portions. Location was great, 5 mins walk to the sunbear and orangutan sanctuary's.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Location
Cons: Little old but comfortable and clean location perfect
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I just loved this hotel!! The environment is amazing, you are literally in the middle of the jungle and you can walk around the wooden path in the resort and spot a lot of different animals. Staff are really friendly and sweet and they have been helping me to organize the Kinabatangan river trip (there are also others you can choose from), airport pick up (however, it’s cheaper to use Grab, perfectly safe) etc. The resort is just around the corner of the orangutan and sunbear sanctuary, 10 minutes by walk. They also have a pool, which can be very relaxing and refreshing when it’s really warm.
Cons: It’s not really a negative point, but there is some space for development regarding the breakfast. Overall, you just don’t really care about it as the beauty of the surroundings around you matters.
7.1 Good
Pros: Lovely grounds and friendly staff but that's about it. This place needs some new investment to match other hotels in the region. I guess you're paying to be in walking distance of the orangutans but there's no other reason to stay.
Cons: Room was pretty old fashioned and needs some money spending. Basic, noisy air-con. All a bit block like. Poor value
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Totally into the jungle, next to the reserve of ourangutanes. The swimming pool is in the middle of trees, very peaceful and quiet. Value for money is correct, friendly staff and good food at the restaurant
Cons: Old hotel that seems to be a bit left over. Would need a bit of refresh!
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful setting in the jungle. 5 minutes walk to the Orangutan sanctuary. Interconnecting rooms great for families. Kids loved the dolphin slide at the kids pool.
Cons: Very dated rooms and facilities.

9.4 Excellent
Pros: Excellent food, awesome staff! Clean and cute room. Beautiful restaurant and terrace with a great view.
Cons: Wish there was Wi-Fi in the room as well.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staff here were very friendly, helpful and welcoming. I liked the style of the hotel, oriental, an older hotel but with plenty of character and charm. The highlight was the lovely rooftop restaurant and terrace bar. I only spent one night in Sandakan but I think this hotel was a great choice because you had everything on site to enjoy an evening.
Cons: I was leaving at 8am in the morning and had to go out to find breakfast - so just an option of breakfast from 7am, not a complaint as such!
4.0 Okay
Pros: Room was a good size and shower was good. The rooftop "Bisto" was lovely, if a little pricey. Staff were friendly and polite, if ultimately useless at helping to sort out any problems (which there were enough of to make this worth commenting on).
Cons: The methods of verifiying we were still coming included email (which we confirmed on the first one) as well as trying to call us 5 times! I guess they have been let down before but it was getting silly! The Wifi (the main reason for staying in the city between Jungle treks and tours) was un-usable. We asked why and were told by the staff that it was very slow in the rooms due to the amount of people staying and that we should come and use the lobby wifi as it would be much better. Not the greatest of ways to do our bookings and sort out emails but we thought we would try it. If anything it was actually worse there and the next member of staff said nothing could be done,it was just "very slow". At least one of the routers on the floor was not configigured properly and could not be used! Bedding was stained (although clean)! The noise was just crazy on the 5th floor, doors slamming, alarms for the open doors beeping, children running up and down the halls until 2-3am. This is no place to have a relaxing break. For the money, I was very disappointed and would not advise staying here. For this price level I expected a much better hotel for this area and would ask for my money back if I thought it would do any good!

Spacious bed, modern shower and bathroom, nice quiet air-con. Good wifi. Could do with spending some money on the corridors but maybe that will come. Pros: The room was nice and we had a good window view looking onto the jungle. The bathroom was spacious and water temperature was great. Bed was comfortable. The staff were friendly during our stay.
Cons: Wifi wasn’t accessible in our room despite calling and speaking to reception to get it fixed during our stay. Ended up having to use the lobby - which was fine but had some private calls that needed to be made which wasn’t ideal for the lobby. The location is a little bit away from everything so found we had to use Grab a fair bit.

7.1 Good
Pros: The tranquillity & privacy of the resort.

Pros: Boh and verry clean Room. Helpful and friendly stuff. On the opposite side od the Road is very modern caffe-as in Europe. Highly recomand this accomodation!!!
6.0 Good
Pros: The staff is friendly and check in was easy and fast. The room is accommodating with a table for work and the bed is not too shabby. The toilet is pretty impressive compare to the outlook of the hotel. Near to airport.
Cons: The area is pretty hard to find (Grab actually took me to another area when i choose the hotel name, so those that use Grab, use the address). The area is sort isolated (For those choosy with food, its not going to be pleasant here). The surrounding of the hotel is run down and rather creepy (dark and dangerous) due to low occupancy of the shops. The TV seems impressive with the TV Box, but it is not functioning at all. The screen keep freezing and I can't do anything.
10.0 Excellent

9.6 Excellent
Pros: This place is as jungle as it gets! Breathtaking views, rustic and authentic. It’s set in the most beautiful and peaceful location. One of the highlights of my trip staying here. The staff are so friendly as well and helped me booked my trips and they also provide a free lift and back to the wildlife centres 5 mins down the road. The wooden lodge I stayed in was comfy and clean and the outdoor shower was a bonus! Food was ace! Just make sure you have enough cash before you come as there’s no atm or card machine.

Pros: Staff were very friendly and helpful and made sure that our stay was memorable. The huts are comfortable with mosquito nets and open air en suite. Food was delicious and very good value. Thoroughly recommend.
