North Argentina is a rich and varied part of South America, with stunning scenery and diverse cultures. Argentina is a huge country, and the North has a historic, timeless atmosphere with its Quechuan villages and great valleys, which stand in contrast to the more cosmopolitan South. From the Andes in the Northwest, bordering Bolivia, to the valleys of Calchaquí and the lush Yungas jungle, holidays in North Argentina promise to be an unforgettable experience.
North Argentina holidays: Getting around
The easiest way to get to North Argentina is to fly to Buenos Aires and take a connecting flight to the North. There are regular flights to Jujuy, Salta, Posadas, Puerto Iguazú and Resistencia. Alternatively, it is possible to take a long but comfortable coach journey across the country. Visitors may want to hire a car whilst in Argentina, as this is a great way to see the country. The best time to visit North Argentina is in the spring, before the weather gets very humid, particularly in the Andean region. The time zone is GMT -3.
North Argentina holidays: Where to start
The spectacular Andean northwest is an absolute must in North Argentina. Just south of Bolivia, the Andes are a landscape of stunning mountainous scenery. On the road towards Bolivia, visitors can discover fortress ruins, village markets, and huge cacti along the roads. Head to the Baritú National Park just north of the Salta province, the only tropical park in Argentina. Surrounded by mountains, the park contains endangered species such as the onza.
Another essential stop on North Argentina holidays is the Calchaquí valleys. From lush vineyards(for wine tasting) to mountain deserts (for hiking), these valleys cross many provinces of North Argentina and include indigenous towns that offer fascinating glimpses into a traditional world far removed from the country's urban centres. In the small city of Salta, visitors can see the architecture and culture of its Spanish colonial past.
