Top tips for hiring a car at Bastia-Poretta Airport

  • While on a mountainous Mediterranean island, organise car hire at Bastia Poretta Airport to give yourself full freedom to explore, and not be restricted by local transport systems with set schedules and routes. There is much to see and do on the island, and taking up travel time navigating a new transport system that can be used to discover a hidden gem in a quiet area can be avoided with Bastia Poretta Airport car hire bookings.
  • UK citizens are not required to organise an international driving permit to drive in France, though do check with the individual companies offering car hire at Bastia Poretta Airport as some may still request it. As long as your driving license meets the requirements of the company you are able to use it to drive for short terms in France.
  • When you are coming to the end of your travels and returning your car hire at Bastia Poretta Airport, the process and location to bring the car back may differ between companies. Many of the Bastia Poretta Airport car hire operations use a designated returns area at the airport, which is a car park just outside of the main airport entrance and is clearly signed on approach to the airport. Some other car hires at Bastia Poretta Airport may use a different return location, and when you collect your rental the staff will give you the full details on the process to return the car.

FAQs about hiring a car at Bastia-Poretta Airport

  • What documentation and requirements are needed to rent a car at this airport?

Your driver’s license must be full, valid and held for at least one year, and you will also need to meet a minimum age requirement that can differ between rental services in France, but usually begins at 18. Fees may be applied for drivers under 25, and this information will show when you are looking at booking your car hire at Bastia Poretta Airport. You will also need to provide your passport as a secondary identification to most rental offices, as well as your major credit for the fees associated with your booking and any potential deposit. It is a requirement while driving in France to have with you a copy of the current insurance for the vehicle, so if you are not using the policies offered by the rental company be sure to bring your own.

  • Where are the rental car desks at Bastia Poretta?

You will find the main rental desks as soon as reaching the arrivals area of Bastia Poretta Airport, they are clearly signed and easy to spot. Most are located together in the Arrivals area of the airport, though some company desks are located in a different section of the main building and still easy to find, though there are a few rental companies with offices offsite that instead offer a shuttle service to collect you from directly outside the main doors of the airport.

  • What type of car is a good option for Corsica?

With many narrow and winding roads, a smaller vehicle could be a good option for those not too familiar with mountainous roads and traveling in a small party. As long as the people in your group and your luggage fit comfortably, a compact vehicle may make those tricky roads a little more comfortable. If your travel group is larger, an SUV may be a good idea. There are many roads across the island with steep incline that an SUV may handle more comfortably than a standard vehicle, and some sights and beaches have a rougher road to reach that an SUV may make navigating easier.

  • How much does it cost to hire a car at Bastia-Poretta Airport?

On average a car hire at Bastia-Poretta Airport costs £32 per day.

  • Which car hire companies will pick you up at Bastia-Poretta Airport?

The only car hire company that offers shuttle or pick-up services from Bastia-Poretta Airport to off-airport locations is Europcar.

1. We clearly specified, when booking the car, that we did not want an electric car as we know that charging stations are limited in Corsica. However, the only option upon arrival was an electric car. As a result I had to do some distance to charge my car between my village and the right charging station. The nearest one was not even fast enough to charge the car so I had to go 9km farther to find a super charger. 2. When picking up the car, we had to wait more than 40 minutes as there was only one staff attending the clients. It was quite late (10.00pm) but during school holidays, the renter should plan enough staff to operate at scale

We thought we were getting a gasoline automatic compact car for this rental, but upon arrival at the Hertz location we were notified we were being switched to an electric car. Hindsight, we would likely have adjusted our travel plans and day by day itinerary had we known we were getting an electric car and the challenges we would face with it. As part of the pickup process, I would recommend your agent(s) ask the customer if they are familiar with electric cars and how to charge them. If not, they should provide a quick hands-on demonstration or at least instruction sheet on how to set up the car for charging. At our first charging point, we ended up figuring this out on the fly trying to reference the cars manuals (in an other language) and googling online. Eventually we figured the process out but we probably wasted an hour in doing so. In addition to that we were sold an e-motum card to make charging easier and more convenient. Unfortunately our first charging station we picked from the app happened to be a very slow charging station (would have taken 6+ hours to charge) so once we realized this, we had to abandon that charging station and drive somewhere else to find a fast charger. I would recommend your agents speak to this as well during the car pickup process as that knowledge for electric newbies like us would have saved us a lot of time and we could have planned our trip accordingly. The other issue we ran into is that the hotel we were staying at only had freshmile charging stations. I'm assuming freshmile would have a similar card program like e-motum, and that would have been more helpful for us as when we get back to the hotel each night, we could put the vehicle on charge for the next day. Instead, we had to seek out an e-motum station on our way back each day, sit in a parking lot for an hour while it recharged before we could go back to the hotel. I'm not sure if freshmile cards are offered through Hertz or not, but that would have been better in our case vs e-motum. Aside from the challenges above related to the nuances of electric, the reservation, pickup and dropoff process were otherwise good. Mike

Car given to me was new but mechanically failed within a few hundreds of km driving. Don’t fault Avis though. But number they gave me to call for help did not respond for an entire day, and only upon me calling back repeatedly and having the original desk call back on my behalf for it to be towed and replaced (which involved me going back to closest airport to pick up another car). No refund offered, at least not yet.

They do the bait and switch with the type of car you book. Reserved an electric car and only had petrol options available. Unable to manage a clutch due to a bum leg so was unable to get a car that day after making a deliberate trip to the airport for pick up. Also their signage to find them is like a scavenger hunt. Choose another rental company if you don't want your plans derailed.
