Utilising car hire in Bern could present problems if you hire a large vehicle such as an SUV. Unless you are planning mountain road trips, it is probably better to hire smaller, compact cars when in the older European cities. Just like many cities in Europe, there are narrow cobbled lanes that will be blocked up by larger cars. When it’s time to tackle long road trips, your compact car hire should serve you well. Always make sure you are equipped with the right tyres and safety gear for the time of year.
The speed limits in Bern are observed in kilometres and will be marked that way on the roads. Generally, Switzerland allows for 50 km/h on inner city and residential roads, 80 km/h on larger roads outside the city and 120 km/h on the motorways.
With the city being quite condensed with smaller roads, it is wise to park your car at the venues, hotels, restaurants and shopping centres you visit where possible, and opt for large parking garages the rest of the time. You can find parking garages such as the City Hall Parking, City West Parking, Bahnhof Parking Bern and others that have many bays and security.

Cons:
Everything went very well and I can not think of anything that would have made the rental better. Pick up was very smooth and a good experience as was the drop off. I would rent with you again.9.2 Wonderful
Sept 2016
Pros:
Friendly, helpful staff. No nonsense. No pressure when I told the agent I had already purchased insurance. There are weird laws about EU citizens driving Swiss cars into the EU -for which I think they may want to charge you more and give you an EU car - but fortunately that didn't apply to me with my US license. I had a horrific, straight up fraud experience renting from Sixt at Ljubiana airport in 2014 and swore I'd never use the company again. Friends in Bern insisted Sixt in Switzerland was good and I tried the company out again. I was glad to see they were right.Cons:
I'd never driven a Renault before and had no opinion about the brand going in. Now, I can say I'd never buy one. The automatic transmission is poorly designed, the shut off switch that stops the engine at traffic lights functioned far from optimally, USB charging was a joke, and the navigation is very slow to load. This is all not Sixt's fault, other than that they chose to buy cars of that brandOne location in Bern

Pros:
Nice car, great location, GPS included.Cons:
It took > 30 minutes to resolve a difference in rate between the Kayak promised price (which I had in an email) and the rental price that was at the Hertz desk in Bern. This should not have been a problem if Kayak's process with Hertz was clear.10.0 Wonderful

Some Bern car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Bern.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Bern car hire.
