Kochi car hires from £35/day

Depending on whether you plan to do a lot of driving with your hired car in Kochi and beyond, you may feel more comfortable in a smaller car on India’s narrow and busy roads. Many streets in smaller towns are not wide enough for two lanes, so a smaller vehicle may help you here as well. A navigation system and air conditioning would be definite bonuses while driving in India, as any new country can be confusing to navigate and India’s climate can get uncomfortably hot for long car rides.

Speed limits in India are fairly high, varied and often not regarded by locals. On most urban roads, the speed limit is 70 km/h; for highways, 100 km/h; freeways, 120 km/h; and the national upper speed limit is 140 km/h.

Due to the amount of traffic that steadily increases at a constant rate, parking is limited in Kochi along with the rest of India. There are multiple private and secure car parks with varying rates by hour or by day, and also plenty of parking at public transport stations outside of the city to encourage the use of transport to the centre and reduce the congestion in Kochi itself. Generally, with patience, you will find parking in the city at a rate of around Rs 40-50 (A$ 0.71-0.89) per hour.
