Cons: small vehicle, insurance more than cost of car and not disclosed at time we reserved the car.

Falsely advertised prices. Very disappointing expe
Pros: The car itself was fine.
Cons: Originally booked the car for $116 USD for a week (I also paid for separate damage insurance online and expected to have to pay third party liability insurance separately as the online booking never offered it for purchase.) When we went to pick up the car, the mandatory third party insurance cost extra $230 USD. The insurance was double the price of the rental cost itself. We were shocked and no one seemed to know why this was never mentioned anywhere. We built our whole trip around this car, not to mention the car park location is remote and had no other option but to suck it up and pay. We could hear other customers around us having the same issues. I have never been more disappointed in a rental company, as well as the booking site itself for failing to mention such a significant cost. It was false advertisement and I do not recommend Alamo. After all the issues, the associate had the audacity to constantly try to upsell us with bigger cars and extras. They clearly had no shame nor compassion.

Pros: Simple straightforward car, friendly staff.
Cons: Insurance 3 times as expensive as car rental, without any prior warning during online booking. Classic rip-off. Clutch of the manual transmission almost worn out. Wheels need balancing badly and start humming above 50 km/h.
9 Jan 2017
Cons: They tried to tack on a charge not in the original quote for "mandatory' insurance.
10 Jul 2016
Pros: The car was sturdy and clean and got us where we needed to go.
Cons: We opted for a GPS system (at $10/day), and when we received it the stand did not work. When we returned the car, we were informed that the stand had been given to us functional, and we would be charged $30 for the breakage. The posted price on Kayak was also significantly lower than what we were ultimately charged.

'Mandator' insurance 3x cost of car rental
Cons: Liability insurance was 3x cost of car rental - site warned of 'extras' but this was crazy. And the agent kept pushing for more insurance! Subsequent research indicates only a portion of this is mandatory by law, the rest is Alamo. Agent also claimed that the collision insurance - yet more cost - we bought from Kayak (via Allianz) was invalid in Costa Rica. Don't think this was true, but if so its a beef with Kayak. Final reckoning was $460 of which $120 was the stated price. Oh, and the SUV was a very poor Daihatsu....
28 Aug 2016
Cons: The car rental was advertised as $70-80/week, but when we arrived Alamo required personal liability insurance through them which made the rental $270-280/week. This should have been made clearer by Alamo when checking in 1 day prior to arrival. When checking in through the Alamo website, it still said only $70-80.

Beware high insurance charages
Pros: Very speedy pick-up from baggage claim and transfer to the off-site lot.
Cons: Just so you know -- Alamo Liberia advertises very low rates, then charges thru the nose for insurance. Our $110 weekly rate quickly became a $450 rental after "mandatory" insurance, GPS (recommended) and pre-paid gas (also recommended).
21 Dec 2016
Great car, insurance way to expensive
Pros: The car was great, very comfortable and very good gas mileage.
Cons: Cost of insurance, is as much or more than the rental fee of the car. I know these comments probably go nowhere and nobody will respond to this but for full coverage insurance at home for 3 cars. With a reasonable cost of insurance this review would be 5 stars across the board.
22 Dec 2016
Price charged was nearly 100 per cent more than bo
Cons: Car was in a bad shape.
Was given faulty gps and wifi device that I had to return the next day.
Felt cheated ;-/
Pros: The car was clean and the staff was friendly.
Cons: I booked the car for a total of $76 - I even confirmed this over the phone with an agent. When I arrived, they added $19/day for insurance that was "required" in Costa Rica. This was NOT STATED ANYWHERE. I declined coverage twice and they still insisted it was mandatory. I would like my money back.
Also, it was listed that this location was onsite at the airport - it was not. I had to wait 15 min for a shuttle and it was a 5 min drive offsite.

The damn insurance got me again
Pros: The car itself, as well as the pickup and dropoff were easy.
Cons: Every time I travel to Latin America, I try to avoid the inevitable
Insurance hassle at the counter. I never win. This time I purchased the insurance from Allianz that Kayak suggested. I thought that would cover the mandatory 3rd party coverage in Costa Rica. False! It did not. And when I arrived at 11pm, I was forced to accept a $28/day insurance charge—more than the cost of the car rental! Having to pay an extra $250, plus the extra 90 I dropped on the useless insurance I bought from Kayak/Allianz, will never leave me satisfied. For $500, I could have had private drivers for the entire week.
6 Sep 2016
Pros: The car was nice, but the price went up and up...
Cons: There were too many fees at the counter. They even charged us $40 for pickup/dropoff from airport which is like 2 minutes away...
3 Dec 2016
Pros: The vehicle was good, just as booked.
Cons: Location description is wrong. Listing says airport location for both pickup and drop off.
Off location- drop off location was difficult to find.
15 Dec 2016
Hidden mandatory Insurance charges and BS Gas Char
Pros: Car was in good shape and did well on roads.
Cons: Kayak quoted a price that did not include the mandatory $20/day insurance so there was a perception that Budget was less than others when that was untrue and misleading. At inspextion I was charged for 1/8 of tank when barely 15 miles were used from full. Never using budget or Kayak again.
1 Jan 2017
Pros: Car was in good shape and clean
Cons: Budget in Costa Rica slapped on a $20 per day tax despite the fact that we had 2 kinds of insurance already.
The website said "SUV" large car that would seat 6 people with seat belts and when we arrived they said gave us their version of a large car- a smaller car that seated 5 people. One of us had to ride without s seat belt.
Very frustrating!!! We tried to safeguard against both of these and feel very taken advantage of!!!
3 Jan 2017
Cons: Kayak didn't inform us of all the added expenses there are to renting a car in Costa Rica. What should have been $192 was $424. Very disappointing.
3 Jan 2017
Bad customer service at the airport
Pros: The car was fine mechanically.
Cons: Hard sell on buying supplemental insurance, charged for roadside safety net that I didn't request, overcharged on my credit card.
22 Jan 2017
Pros: car itself was ok. customer service was fine in costa rica
Cons: the insurance should be listed when you order the car. or at least provide an estimate. its unfair to blindside the consumer and charge them double. ridiculous as a matter of fact. and if only manual transmissions are available, that should be made clear also. i was stuck driving the entire trip because my girlfriend has never driven manual transmission
1 Feb 2017
Cons: Beware - The counter reps will try to sell you the prepaid petrol, stating it is cheaper at Budget than at petrol stations. This is not true. Also decline the damage insurance even if they claim it is 'mandatory'. They're running a scam at this location. The San Jose location clearly advertises that you can decline the insurance if your credit card covers rental insurance - just make sure to have a document from your credit card company (all it takes is a quick phone call) clearly stating that your rental will be covered in Costa Rica.
Pros: The car was great, but we had to pay $477 in required insurance for 9 days. The car rental was only $70. The website doesn't mention this.
24 Dec 2016
Liberia Costa Rica thrifty scamming people
Pros: Would avoid renting car from this location.
Cons: Intimidation and force used to get you to buy daily insurance at higher cost when picking up car. No matter what they will find problems with car at drop off.
5 Feb 2017
Pros: Just an below avarage car rental place...
Cons: They charge arm and a leg for insurance. All they want is mint money.other than that they don't care about clients needs.
12 Feb 2017
Good car. Beware insurance
Pros: 4wd vehicle is necessary on anything but major roads. Our manual Terios SUV was a little bumpy but handled very rough dirt roads without any problems in first gear. No joke, the dirt roads near and in two national parks in Guanacaste were extremely steep and rocky, and were only one lane in some areas. Also GPS is indispensable because many roads aren't signed. Easy shuttle from Liberia. They met us just outside the terminal and called a day or two before to confirm (showed up as 516 area code).
Cons: They made us buy collision, theft, damage insurance, etc even though we had a letter from our credit card company. They didnt like the wording. Said we needed letterhead, specified dollar amount of coverage (ours had no limit), specify Costa Rica (ours only listed countries not covered). Also third party liability coverage is mandatory. We also had battery issue with GPS unit which kept shutting itself off. Overall cost was lower than competition even with their deluxe insurance. Insurance, gps, extra driver, taxes, fees, etc will be double or triple cost of the car itself.
13 Feb 2017
Cons: You guys are a bunch of thieves and when i get home i will be disputing your stealing from me through visa thanks for the free car not my first time being ripped of by car rental thieves. Honestly and sincerly Brad K Dent unlike you People
5 Mar 2017
Cons: We booked our vehicle online through Kayak and also purchased insurance. Upon arrival at Thrifty, we were told that they would not accept the insurance and that we would have to purchase our insurance from Thrifty at a cost of over $700. It was basically "take it or leave it". Why does Kayak allow insurance to be sold through their website when it is invalid? We are very upset with this transaction and I would not recommend anyone to book through Kayak. Book directly with the car rental agency so you will know your final cost beforehand. Be prepared.
20 Mar 2017
Pros: I van not use mucho crédito CARD INSURANCE for the car. I was forces to purchase the full coverage.
Cons: That is a special requerimiento to use the crédito card car INSURANCE, It has to be printed, etc.
20 Mar 2017
Pros: Van worked well and the staff was very helpful after potential mechanical problem arose.
Cons: Need to advertise the price of the insurance better. Overall cost doubled when adding in the insurance.
25 Mar 2017
Embarrassing service. Never renting from Thrifty a
Pros: Nothing. They didn't show and didn't answer the phone. Even after I called to confirm before we let.
Cons: No shuttle was at the airport. Nobody answered and we ended up having to pay $600 and rented a car all week that we didn't want. Thanks thrifty- you made me spend almost half of my budget for the week on a car we didn't want- all because you lied to me.
28 Mar 2017
Gov't Required Insurance is 2x as much as the rent
Pros: Close to airport with easy shuttle transfers.
Cons: We arrived in the evening with a full-size SUV reservation, I do not believe we had a full-size as it was the last car in the lot, still we paid full price and the insurance is insane! Not their fault but they could warn you before you arrive, wont let you rent without it
Pros: Little Suzuki manual trans was just right for the back roads.
Cons: The rate was dirt cheap but the undisclosed need to buy Costa
Rican insurance put the rate up there with the higher US rates. about $60 per day.
23 Dec 2016
Everything went smoothly
Pros: They dropped the car off for me at the hotel, then shuttled my family to airport after dropoff 2 wks later.
1 Jan 2017
Pros: We rented the car $98 for six days. There was not any explanation for all the hidden fees. Mandatory Costa Rica insurance, third party coverages, even though you have credit card coverage you have to pay mandatory charges etc. We had to pay $400 at the end. It was the most expensive car rental for us.
Be careful renting a car in Costa Rica and ask all other hidden fees before booking.
3 Jan 2017
Cons: There is a disconnect with kayak and the rental company. They did not have any cars available, while kayak showed plenty
9 Jan 2017
They refused to honour our reservation!!
Cons: Our flight was delayed by a couple of hours. They used that as an excuse to cancel our reservation. The real reason was that they wanted a higher price (2.5x) for the car.
We were left stranded at the airport for hours! Our son was unwell and we wanted to get him to the hotel asap, but they just smirked at our predicament.
Shame on Kayak for having such partners.

Payless Car Rental Liberia Costa Rica
Pros: The car was clean and ready for us.
Cons: We had to wait almost thirty minutes for a shuttle after our arrival. Location is 5km from airport property. Once there, we were told that auto insurance was "mandatory" in CR for rentals. The two "policies" they offered more than doubled the price of the car. This should have been settled on the initial rental online. The company would not budge, even when I pointed out that I was paying with an American Express card and they cover any rentals. Bad start. Car itself was very underpowered. Finally, the used a retread on one of their tires, knowing how bad some CR roads are. The reason I know this is that on the next-to-last day, we were driving along and another driver mentioned our tire seemed flat. Pulled over and tire was low, but not flat. Attempted to change flat (there was spare - never rent a car without a spare!) and the jack was not able to work properly. Someone before damaged the screw mechanism. Had to get a stranger at a gas station with a jack to help me change the tire. The stranger pointed out the bad tire was a retread. Location at San Jose drop off was clean, conveniently located, and very friendly.
17 Feb 2017
A reservation doesn't mean you're going to have a
Cons: Very far offsite and no cars when we arrived. We had to rent at another agency for a much higher rate
20 Feb 2017
Pros: It would have been better if the website warned about Costa rica' s car insurance policies other then that it was great
25 Feb 2017
Absolutely terrible!! Stay away!
Pros: Nothing considering they had no car for us
Cons: Made a reservation for a minivan. Arrived in Liberia at 5pm. Called Payless to send a shuttle for us and they told us they had no cars left for rental. Another group we were with had a reservation too. We ended up having to rent a 12 passenger mini bus from another company for a lot more money. Payless representative was rude and not helpful at all. Never again.
Cons: I booked a car under a 4 dollars a day rate, plus insurance which I got online. After arriving at the counter, they told me that I needed to get an additional insurance that woul triple the cost that I had already paid for. That was not written anywhere online, which makes me think that they weed knowingly withholding information in order to get the business. I cancelled the booking at the counter and still got a charge to my debit card which now I have to find a way to get rid of.
14 Aug 2016
BE AWARE OF SCAM
Cons: First they don't tell you the fees for your car rental will be 4X what you thought it would be. Then i bought car insurance they the website but had to buy it again or leave a $900 deposit. They did not note that a license plate was not on the back of the car. I was told it will be $180 fee to replace it. I have pictures if they try to say it wasn't
5 Jan 2017
Cons: Got to the airport and they stated they had given out our car right before and we're out of cars. They said they had 1 available but it was 3x the price per day. We went with another company.
23 Jan 2017
Cons: Should have been STRONGLY suggested that we rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle due to all the dirt roads and streams that crossed these dirt roads. Had no maps in the airport rental location or Nocera.
1 Feb 2017
Pros: Easy fast and quick shuttle to airport
Cons: ....was all good
14 Feb 2017
Great value and charged fairly for an accident I c
Pros: Much cheaper than others when mandatory insurance costs are included. I declined optional insurance and backed into a fence. Their charge to fix the bumper ($360) was very fair as I'd asked a friend's auto body mechanic friend ahead of time.
Cons: Was slow to pick up. Not sure why these places don't speed up that process.
16 Mar 2017
Pros: The pick up and drop off was super easy.
Cons: The deposit for the car was $2,555 U.S. I bought the insurance online and they made me buy an additional insurance. The car was a bit sketchy as well. The upgrade was way more expensive. You need an SUV for the area.
Cons: They show a picture of a Toyota RAV4 as the model on offer, which is very powerful, but changed their fleet to weakling Suzuki's without advertising it.
1 Jan 2017
Cons: National wouldn't honor the insurance I was encouraged to purchase when I reserved the car online. Total waste of $70!!
After loading the car we found out the air conditioner didn't work, had to go though whole check out process again for another car.
5 Feb 2017
Was nervous about a Costa Rica rental but...
Pros: The vehicle was exactly what was advertised. It was a Diahatsu Bego, automatic, all wheel drive, with no bells or whistles. Despite the worst roads I had ever driven on (Monteverde), the vehicle ran like a champ. I was very nervous about check in and check out. We took video of the SUV at checkout. The return was very smooth. They had many vehicles to check in so I'm glad we arrived early.
Cons: We used our credit card for collision and paid bought the mandatory liability through National. They insisted it was $24/day (required), when I was told over the phone $12/day. Only when I told him this did he show the options for the two. Ultimately we did go with the 0 deductible $24/day over the 80/20 liability.
27 Mar 2017
Poor service at drop off
Pros: Pick was OK, good services...a little unstructured but wanted to make sure I knew everything
Cons: Drop off, paid for full coverage had 2 flats and tried to make me admit to an accident/mark on the car. All I wanted was an apology for all the bald tires and the wanted me to fill out paperwork. I paid for full-all coverage and I should not have had as many issues as I did for that much money
Pros: The people were friendly and (thankfully) spoke English. The "Large SUV" (a Suzuki Grand Vitara) met my needs perfectly although I originally got a smaller vehicle not realizing how small it was going to be. I asked if I could get a manual transmission and they did that for me too, which was great. The SUV performed great on dirt roads along the Guanacaste coastal region.
Cons: I opted out of insurance when I booked it, and that was probably a mistake. I think it was a lot cheaper if I had booked it online, and without this I had to buy there and it was almost twice the price of the car. That SUCKED.
11 Dec 2016
Employees lost our luggage
Pros: Great car for price and season
Cons: An employee loaded our luggage into another customers car that left with our stuff. It was really tough on us because we were traveling with infant and made our first day a looooooong nightmare. They did help in tracking down our luggage, but it was up to us to make arrangement to to meet up with that customer and go pick up our luggage.

Scam in Costa rica
Cons: Car cost 3.5 times my confirmed rate. They tried to charge me 5.5 and I said that's enough. Most of money extra was insurance and additional add ons such as license charge. Never had this experience before. Very low class!
Pros: I arrived and went to talk to an agent and they said they see my reservation but don't have any cars available. Bad enough, but they didn't even care. They made no effort to rectify the situation and gave me a "tough luck" attitude.
13 Jan 2017
Cons: There was no car available. We had to rent from someone else.
Cons: The rate that we were given was not the rate that they made us pay. We paid for the extra insurance when we booked online and when we got to Avis they said that they wouldn't take that insurance, even after we showed proof of it. We rented the car with our credit card that also had insurance, but they made us pay $29 extra per day in insurance. They said that was the basic rate and wouldn't let us take the car without it. So we paid for insurance twice. We watched as they did it to the guy who came behind us too. We researched it and we had the right to refuse but then they had the right to refuse our rental. We were in the country with kids and couldn't be stuck without a car so they had us in a catch 22. We paid the extra money, but for a 7 day rental it was nearly twice the original amount. We rent yearly in Costa Rica, and never had this happen. Will never use Avis in Costa Rica again.
Pros: By the time we arrived to Hertz in Costa Rica, we already purchased an insurance policy via Allianz, a reputable company that we have used for medical coverage as well.
Hertz would not accept this policy and forced us to purchase their own at a higher value. From $99 to $245 dollars.
I thought that was not acceptable and at this moment pursuing a reimbursement.
