Cons: small vehicle, insurance more than cost of car and not disclosed at time we reserved the car.

Pros: The car was sturdy and clean and got us where we needed to go.
Cons: We opted for a GPS system (at $10/day), and when we received it the stand did not work. When we returned the car, we were informed that the stand had been given to us functional, and we would be charged $30 for the breakage. The posted price on Kayak was also significantly lower than what we were ultimately charged.

'Mandator' insurance 3x cost of car rental
Cons: Liability insurance was 3x cost of car rental - site warned of 'extras' but this was crazy. And the agent kept pushing for more insurance! Subsequent research indicates only a portion of this is mandatory by law, the rest is Alamo. Agent also claimed that the collision insurance - yet more cost - we bought from Kayak (via Allianz) was invalid in Costa Rica. Don't think this was true, but if so its a beef with Kayak. Final reckoning was $460 of which $120 was the stated price. Oh, and the SUV was a very poor Daihatsu....

Cons: The car rental was advertised as $70-80/week, but when we arrived Alamo required personal liability insurance through them which made the rental $270-280/week. This should have been made clearer by Alamo when checking in 1 day prior to arrival. When checking in through the Alamo website, it still said only $70-80.
Pros: The car was clean and the staff was friendly.
Cons: I booked the car for a total of $76 - I even confirmed this over the phone with an agent. When I arrived, they added $19/day for insurance that was "required" in Costa Rica. This was NOT STATED ANYWHERE. I declined coverage twice and they still insisted it was mandatory. I would like my money back.
Also, it was listed that this location was onsite at the airport - it was not. I had to wait 15 min for a shuttle and it was a 5 min drive offsite.

The damn insurance got me again
Pros: The car itself, as well as the pickup and dropoff were easy.
Cons: Every time I travel to Latin America, I try to avoid the inevitable
Insurance hassle at the counter. I never win. This time I purchased the insurance from Allianz that Kayak suggested. I thought that would cover the mandatory 3rd party coverage in Costa Rica. False! It did not. And when I arrived at 11pm, I was forced to accept a $28/day insurance charge—more than the cost of the car rental! Having to pay an extra $250, plus the extra 90 I dropped on the useless insurance I bought from Kayak/Allianz, will never leave me satisfied. For $500, I could have had private drivers for the entire week.

Pros: The car was nice, but the price went up and up...
Cons: There were too many fees at the counter. They even charged us $40 for pickup/dropoff from airport which is like 2 minutes away...

Pros: I made a reservation, then I was told by Budget that the location would be closed when I arrive. I was charged over $100 to change the location. The location was the same as where I booked, so I was charged $100 for NOTHING.
We asked for a toddle chair, when we arrived all the chairs were broken so we left with the wrong size seat, we had to purchase a new seat. We got charged daily for a seat we never used.
This was my worst experience using a car rental company every.
I should not have to pay for changing locations and a chair. These added over $250 to my bill for services I never used.
Cons: I booked a car under a 4 dollars a day rate, plus insurance which I got online. After arriving at the counter, they told me that I needed to get an additional insurance that woul triple the cost that I had already paid for. That was not written anywhere online, which makes me think that they weed knowingly withholding information in order to get the business. I cancelled the booking at the counter and still got a charge to my debit card which now I have to find a way to get rid of.

BE AWARE OF SCAM
Cons: First they don't tell you the fees for your car rental will be 4X what you thought it would be. Then i bought car insurance they the website but had to buy it again or leave a $900 deposit. They did not note that a license plate was not on the back of the car. I was told it will be $180 fee to replace it. I have pictures if they try to say it wasn't
Pros: The people were friendly and (thankfully) spoke English. The "Large SUV" (a Suzuki Grand Vitara) met my needs perfectly although I originally got a smaller vehicle not realizing how small it was going to be. I asked if I could get a manual transmission and they did that for me too, which was great. The SUV performed great on dirt roads along the Guanacaste coastal region.
Cons: I opted out of insurance when I booked it, and that was probably a mistake. I think it was a lot cheaper if I had booked it online, and without this I had to buy there and it was almost twice the price of the car. That SUCKED.
Extra charges for insurance were not listed on you
Pros: The car
Cons: The website made it seem that my rental would be $28, and that that included all taxes, fees, and surcharges. When I arrived, I was informed that I would also have to pay for insurance (by law in Costa Rica), and therefore had the option of paying $80 or $170 for insurance. I chose the more expensive option, because the $80 option required that I put down a $2,500 deposit. The website should make these charges clear before booking. Had I know about all of the extra charges, I would have taken the bus. But I didn't, and by the time I found out I was at the rental agency and it was too late for me to catch the bus. A refund or voucher from Kayak of some sort would be nice, but I don't imagine that will happen.
