Have insurance ready and know if you are going to go through tolls. I paid for daily tolls and only went through one day

Bit unusual driving on the other side of road. But you get used to it . The only thing different in usa is that most red lights you are allowed to turn right on . Apart from that easy and drivers very patient .

Try calling ahead o ensure the car you want is actually available. Avoid tolls if you can, very difficult to understand, as is parking....many different systems depending where you go
KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Melbourne
There are some important things to consider when it comes to making a decision about your Melbourne car rental. While this beautiful Florida coast town does have some public transportation, visitors should look into some of the local attractions that can only be accessed by a rental car. For example, Melbourne visitors are a short car ride from the Brevard Zoo and the Treetop Trail Aerial Adventures. This zoo boasts some treetop explorations with ziplines that would entertain all age groups. A rental car in Melbourne opens up short trips to beautiful spots like Paradise Beach, Whickham Park, and the Andretti Thrill Park.
Visitors who fly into Melbourne will arrive at the Orlando Melbourne International Airport. The car rental kiosks are located inside the terminal, conveniently by the baggage claim areas. The airport provides access to popular car rental companies, including Hertz, Alamo, Budget, and Enterprise. There is no need to travel from the terminal to get your rental vehicle because the rental car parking lot is just outside the airport.
One of the main hazards of driving in Melbourne is becoming distracted by the gorgeous vistas. Drivers should ensure that they are vigilant in avoiding the distractions of the scenery while at the wheel. Sometimes Melbourne has congested traffic during rush hour. From 7am to 9:30am, traffic can be crowded. The same situation is true from 4:30pm to 7pm. Some roads during rush hour that travelers should avoid are Lipscomb Street and Minton Road. If you’re on a schedule or trying to catch a flight, keep this in mind.
One aspect of visiting beach communities that should be known is that drivers should not drive their rental cars in the sand. Unless the vehicle is equipped with four-wheel drive, the car will quickly become stuck. Then, the renter may have to pay for a tow. Melbourne also is a victim of hurricanes during the hurricane season. Travelers should be aware that this area can become affected by tropical storms, where caution must be taken while driving in extremely wet conditions.
When looking for a Melbourne car hire, it's essential to book in advance. This not only guarantees you a car but also gives you the best possible deal. Prices tend to increase as you get closer to the date you need the car, so booking early will save you money. Additionally, you'll have more time to compare prices and options and choose the best car hire in Melbourne for your needs.
One of the benefits of cheap car hire in Melbourne is the freedom it gives you to explore the surrounding areas. Take some time to plan your itinerary and make a list of places you want to visit. Popular day trips from Melbourne include the Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island, and the Yarra Valley wine region. Having a plan will ensure you make the most of your time with the car and see all the sights you want to see.
Melbourne car hire provides the perfect opportunity to explore some of the most popular road trips in Victoria. The Great Ocean Road is a must-see and can be completed on a day trip from Melbourne. It offers spectacular views of the rugged coastline and the famous Twelve Apostles. The Yarra Valley wine region is another popular road trip, just an hour's drive from Melbourne. It's known for its world-class wines and picturesque scenery. Hiring a car in Melbourne is a better option than using public transport as it allows you to travel at your own pace, visit off-the-beaten-track destinations, and take in the stunning sights at your leisure.

FAQs about car hire in Melbourne
What type of car is recommended for driving in Melbourne?
When considering the ideal option of your car rental in Melbourne, it is important to consider what needs you have and what kind of experience you are looking for. Melbourne has beautiful coastal roads, some areas of heavy traffic, and crowded beaches. Travelers would do well to focus on a comfortable full-sized car. The car will not be too big or bulky to navigate in unknown areas. Also, a full-sized car allows for a comfortable interior and smoother driving experience down the Florida coast. If you’re traveling to Melbourne on vacation and you’re looking to drive in style, consider renting a convertible with an automatic roof to enjoy the sun and fresh air.
What’s the speed limit in Melbourne?
Drivers can expect to drive 30mph in residential, business, and municipal traffic areas. School zones drop down to 20mph. Drivers on interstates, highways, and freeways in the area should expect speed limits of 55 to 70mph. Drivers should be cautious for radar speed limit signs and some traffic lights equipped cameras near the city center and close to the airport.
Where are the best places to park in Melbourne?
Visitors should be prepared to spend a few dollars for parking while in Melbourne. This is especially true if visiting downtown or some of the beaches. Downtown Melbourne provides some on-street parking on New Haven Avenue, and there are multiple public parking garages sprinkled throughout the downtown area. However, many locations offer free parking as well. Several of the beaches provide free parking centers too. However, these areas are extremely popular, and it can be challenging to find a spot.

Is cheap car hire in Melbourne better than using public transport or taxis?
Hiring a car in Melbourne can be a better option than using public transport or taxis. Public transport can be crowded and inflexible, and you'll have to stick to specific routes and schedules. With car hire, you have the freedom to go where you want, when you want, without worrying about public transport schedules or taxi availability.
Can young drivers hire a car in Melbourne?
Young drivers can hire a car in Melbourne, but there are restrictions. Most car hire companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old and have held a valid driver's license for at least one year. Some companies may also charge an additional fee for drivers under 25. It's essential to check the terms and conditions of the car hire company before booking to ensure you meet all the requirements. Remember, all drivers must provide valid identification when hiring a car in Melbourne and must have a valid credit card in the driver's name.
Since I was under the impression that car rentals at airports didn’t charge a deposit I didn’t have enough to cover it and left without the car

The staff was fine. It was very busy and They had no cars I had to wait n line for an hour to get my car then when I got to counter. They gave me an economy car that was super smal. I had paid and rented a premium car. She said it would be another 45 minutes for the car I paid for. I feel like I wasted money and could have rented from another company that was actually cheaper and no wait.

Supplier choice
The supplier choice is apparently an EV even though I didn’t select the EV option. They require you to bring the car back charged. For a one day rental to the airport, that is not realistic. I was also charged for gas, which I had stopped near the airport and filled up. I eventually got a credit but the whole thing was a hassle and didn’t leave me feeling good about renting from Budget in the future.

They were short on cars, but found one. Was happy to that point. But wouldn't accept our insurance. The online price ($11 a day, I think) would have been ok, but the only way I would have been allowed to rent at the desk was to purchase a $39 a day package. About 70% more than the base price for the car. Opted not to rent. Suggestion: If the customer does not opt for insurance online, allow them to enter their insurance company right then to see if it's approved. Sorry we couldn't do business.

It took over an hour to get to the desk. There were two people working on a Friday at noon. When I finally did get to the counter the car I reserved was not there as budget had no more cars available at the location. So the car that I reserved the night before wasn’t there. When asked why get a reservation if it doesn’t grantee a car I got an attitude and no answer. After trying to find another rental car with a different company I was forced to take a 80 dollar uber ride to my destination. While waiting on my uber ride there was the budget associate smoking a cigarette while the line was still ridiculously long. Always used Budget in the past and it was my go too for rentals. Unfortunately after this experience and extreme disappointment in the reservation not holding my car I will not rent from budget again.

Some Melbourne car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Melbourne.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Melbourne car hire.
