Excellent servicePros: Quality of service from booking to taking the car back was brilliant. Hit traffic on my return to the depot and they were great in arranging for the car to be dropped back the following morning.Cons: The BMW 3 series as their luxury range lets them down but at £200/w cheaper than the nearest competitor, it can be forgiven

Top tips for renting a car in Plymouth

  • Tackling the sprawling expanse that is the port city of Plymouth is best done with a car. With a car hire in Plymouth, you can really explore this coastal city that reeks of maritime history stretching back to medieval times so sights will be plentiful. You can start with a trip to Plymouth Hoe and the Royal Citadel, both of which share the same stretch of coast and both an easy mile from downtown. After a stop for some tasty seafood, set out on the 30 miles journey into the city’s interior and visit Cotehele House – a well-preserved 16th century estate with a charm of its own.
  • It’s a 50-mile drive to your destination once you land at Exeter Airport and the right choice of vehicle could get your travels off to a splendid start. Booking an advance reservation increases the chance of you getting the right car hire in Plymouth. After you leave Baggage Reclaim at the Arrivals Hall walk across the hall to the Car Hire Area, where staff at companies such as Avis, Hertz and Budget are on hand to retrieve your vehicle.
  • Plymouth is a vibrant educational city with a sizeable student population so expect a fair amount of foot traffic when you’re driving a car hire in Plymouth around the city’s nerve centre, especially at night. The Devon motorway and the A436 control the flow of traffic and are therefore subject to congestion during the day. Downtown, the A374 snakes its way around the city’s heart and is even more vulnerable to gridlock. An early morning or late night start are alternate travel ideas worth considering.
  • By 07:00, the morning rush hour is in full swing and stays that way until about 9:00. Late morning is another great time to set off on a road trip but plan the return carefully to bypass the evening rush hours of 18:00-21:00. The city also has a thriving sports scene so Saturday afternoons and evenings may experience slow traffic areas where games are played.

  • For some, the right car for the job is a late model compact or a stylish economy car. Others may reason that an intermediate SUV or saloon seat all passengers and offers an upgrade in comfort. Discounting the narrow streets you may encounter in the older sections of the city either option is a wise choice. Plymouth is relatively flat with no areas of significant elevation so it’s a driver’s dream.

  • The speed limit for all vehicular traffic within the city limits is 30mph, but along certain sections of the A374 you can accelerate to 50mph. Speeds may be further reduced around educational institutions, hospitals and other important buildings and docklands. If you plan to go food shopping, note that Sainsburys, Morrisons, Tesco and Asda also sell petrol.

  • On-street parking provided by Plymouth City Council within its six zones is possible for a fee of about £1.50 per hour. Car parks, such as the Civic Centre Car Park, litter the northern section of the city where the A374 transits and is close to its cultural pulse.
