Very straight forward rental process. Car was wonderful!!Pros: Beautiful car and easy rental/pickup/drop off process.

A place that will give you limited milesPros: Great serviceCons: Cheap, but they only gave me 200 km for free. So after 200, they charged me around $1 USD per km.

Mileage overchargePros: Ease of pick up and drop off at the airport.Cons: The car had a mileage limit, which I didn't read. The price of my car rental more than doubled when I drove over 200km.
10.0 Excellent14 Jun 2017
Pros: We booked online from the baggage claim and picked up the car 5 minutes later. It was a great price in a very expensive place. They included a device which automatically paid tolls. No line at all to pick up or drop off.

Pros: Quick and easy pick up and drop off, staff were efficient

Drop Off NightmarePros: The pick up and ease was wonderful. The car was very nice.Cons: The drop-off was a nightmare. The drop-off location was extremely difficult to find, no signage telling us where to park, where to drop the keys, etc. We had to do a lot of guessing and walking around asking and looking for help. In the end, we weren't sure we had done the right thing or that we had left the car or the keys in the right spot. The support phone number had no answer.

Top tips for renting a car in Stavanger

  • Opting for car hire in Stavanger rather than relying on public transport will free you from set schedules and routes and also prove invaluable when you want to get around the town outside of regular service hours. You can also reach more out of the way places in the wider area where the town is situated on the south-western Norwegian coast. The first place to head to by car is Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock). The view from there over Lysefjord will remain in your memory for years. In the city centre itself, make sure you visit Stavanger Cathedral and Valberg Tower, to the north of the Market Square district. Then take yourself on a self-drive tour of the historic Gamle Stavanger old part of town.
  • The city is served by its own airport, so you can collect your car hire in Stavanger right there. You’ll be in the city centre after a short drive of 11km (just under 7 miles), as Stavanger Airport is technically in neighbouring Sola. Avis, Budget and Europcar operate out of the airport, along with plenty of others. They’re all in the P10 parking area, and you’ll be taken by free shuttle bus from the arrivals terminal.
  • For one of the smaller cities, the traffic can get pretty congested in Stavanger. At the same time it’s a very green city, with many public parks where people congregate during the day, so it pays to always be careful of pedestrians when you’re driving in the centre of town. You’ll also encounter plenty of runners in the morning around Lake Mosvatnet. Add to that a disproportionate number of cyclists and you’ll rightly infer that driving here is quite a sedate affair.
  • You’ll encounter a significant rush hour in the mornings between 08:00 and 09:00 and once again from around 16:00 to 17:30. This is mainly due to the city being a centre of oil production in Norway, so it has a sizeable industrial area that workers commute to and from each day. Busy intersections are the roundabout on the E39, and again where this road meets Route 509 Madlaveien. Route 44 can also experience traffic jams, especially at the roundabout where Kirkegardsveien meet it. Certain tunnels in the city can be congested too, especially the Ryfast Tunnel and Hundvagtunnelen.

  • When choosing the right model for car hire in Stavanger it’s advisable to get something versatile like an MPV or SUV. A full four-wheel drive vehicle is also not a bad idea if you’re going to venture into the rural areas. During winter, this kind of traction becomes almost mandatory, and make sure to check with you hire car supplier that snow tyres and chains are included when the weather really sets in. During the summer months it becomes more feasible to hire a city car or a standard type of sedan.

  • Stavanger speed limits conform to those all over rural Norway. This means that you can drive up to 60km/h (about 37mph) on these roads. However, in the central and residential areas of the town the driving speed is limited to 30km/h (around 18mph). Make sure to observe this as the police are vigilant about it, although you don’t have to worry about speed cameras, as most trapping is done by mobile radar.

  • Petrol for your Stavanger car hire will cost you slightly more than you’re used to in the UK, coming in at an average of kr1.63 (approx. £1.41). Petrol stations are plentiful (as you’d expect in an oil-producing town) and some of the most easily accessible ones are the Shell on Lokkeveien, the Hillevag petrol station on Hillevagsveien and Uno-X, which you’ll find on Madlaveien.

  • The only free parking in Stavanger is quite a way from the city centre, so you can either park and take about a 30min walk, or take public transport in once you’ve parked your vehicle. You’ll find these 2h free parking areas at Fylkeskommunen and St Olav’s Gate. Closer to the centre you’ll pay anything between 24kr (about 2£) and 72kr (about 6£) per 2h in places like Coop Marked Randabergveien and P-Arketten.
