Lastly, expect the speed limits to be about 10km/h (6mph) around schools and hospitals.

Car rentals in Tulum are a practical option for travelers who want to explore outside the walls of their hotel or resort. With a vehicle at your disposal, you’ll benefit from transportation on demand. Better still, a rental gives you the autonomy to discover sites at your leisure without having to hire a private driver to wait for you—hired drivers can become significantly more pricy than car rentals. For example, you may want to visit one of the thousands of cenotes, some nearby ancient structures, or other beaches.
When you fly to Tulum, you’ll land at Cancun International Airport (CUN). If you’ve booked a car rental in Tulum and anticipate picking it up from here, you’ll need to head out to the parking areas in front of Terminal 2, most of which are within walking distance. If your flight has landed at one of the other two terminals, or if your rental vehicle is located in the rear parking lot situated between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, you may want to catch a ride with the airport’s free shuttle service. There are several car rental companies to rent a vehicle at the airport, including Enterprise, Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, Budget, and others—whichever company you have chosen, you’ll find that they have a rental kiosk within these parking areas.
While the roads in Tulum are well-paved multi-lane highways, you’ll likely find a crowd of other vehicles driving them at any time of day. The busy roadways often have many speeding cars and some defensive driving, so we recommend that you use the service lane to let other drivers pass if you’re feeling uneasy about the traffic pace. While many cars may drive outside of the speed limits, try to stay close to the posted speeds since you’re very likely to be pulled over if you’re found violating it.
Travelers who have chosen Tulum car rentals will want to take note of rush hour in the city and, if possible, avoid the busy roadways during these timeframes. During weekday mornings, rush hour runs between 6:30am and 9am. The late day rush hour will typically occur between 4:30pm and 7pm.

They didn’t have the car we reserved, and the (smaller) one that they did have was nearly twice as expensive as predicted when I reserved it on Kayak. Insurance is a hidden cost. And they tried to get us to take a car that was missing a lug nut on one of the tires (we refused).

We made a reservation for a small car, which was not avaiable at our arrival. Instead of offering us another car for the same price, they obligated us to pay for a bigger car, as my excisting contract was not refundable. At the end we paid 3x the price we had fixed at the beginning. The women at the desk was very unfriendly, not helpful and it appeared as a trick they do regularly to steal money from clients. We will use this service to book a car and i will not recommend it to anyone. Very sad.

The insurance part of the process wasn't clear and I needed to do more detailed research ton understand the mexican accident coverage. Once at the counter I was offered a 60$ a day insurance coverage, I needed to be very informed in order to get the cheaper option, which was still expensive, 40$ a day for insurance. The drop off was a bit complicated as no company representative was present on the drop off lot, which was situated on a different, more secluded part of the airport. We drove to the arrival lot and an employee was able to assist us.

There is no Dollar agency in Tulum. It is Hertz. Took us one hour visiting car rental agencies to find out Dollar is part of Hertz. When we got there our reservation was not in their system. I did not have a positive experience. When I checked in at the counter, I was forced to purchase auto insurance even though I already had it. They said it was not good in Tulum, but it is the same insurance I've used in Cancun and Cozumel. When I went to pick up the small SUV, it was very beat up. Dings, paint scratches, rusted windshield wipers, and torn blades were everywhere. When I asked for another vehicle, they said they were all taken. They found another vehicle which unfortunately was as equal or worse conditions. They did not care much about the cars, and when I finally got in, the fuel was low; keep in mind the airport is in the middle of nowhere; luckily, I made it to a gas station as they won't give you the car full of fuel.

Stay away from HERTZ in Tulum. They had my reservation. They asked if I wanted their insurance, I declined and said my credit card would cover. They said that they didn't have that agreement with credit card card companies and told me I'd need a $2,000 deposit. So I had to take a taxi for $120.

It tool over 2 hours to pick up the car after the check in . We had a baby with us so after long travel this is unacceptable. The reason we were given for the wait so that they need to clean the car after they were dropped off. The car we received was not cleaned. Other customers experienced even longer wait times…

The Tulum airport is new and pretty but the rental car situation/ area is very poorly managed and planned. Rental process took over 90 mins and return process took over an hour. Very disappointing and frustrating!

People who were renting us a car did not speak English at all, were difficult to work with, very slow, did not allow us to switch, coverage to the one we wanted. Very disorganized, took us a while to get a car and to return it. The process is very combers one and not designed for customer comfort.

Waited 45 min inside line and then out by the cars waited another 30 for someone to help us. They didn't have enough cars. They didn't seem to have a system. They were a mess. Our cars air conditioner fan was too weak and didn't blow cold enough. The car was moderately clean inside.

Terrible customer service and gave me a crappy car, low tire pressure at start and ask customer to fill it on the way, engine oil life of 10%. Cause delay on my trip schedule. Charge full at the end of the trip regardless of faulty car and bad customer.

Very long wait, couldn’t find my reservation, and once they found it they tried to charge me almost double the price of the rental for the insurance. The basic and standard insurance (couldn’t explain the difference between the two) was simply for loss or theft, so only option was premium. I left without renting the car. :((
