If you are only visiting the main city, you could get away with a hatchback or regular family sedan. This type of car should be sufficient to take you from one destination in the city to another and might be better suited for the city's narrow roads. However, if you are there to explore other areas of the island or the outskirts of the city, we recommend you hire a car like a 4-wheel drive (4X4), as Zanzibar is known to have unsealed roads that can be difficult to navigate with a normal sedan.

The speed limit in the city of Zanzibar is 50 km/h. However, we recommend that you stay below the speed limit in Zanzibar City as it is extremely crowded and accidents can easily happen. We also recommend you maintain the speed limit outside the city as police officers are known to pull over hired cars with visitors to entice a bribe. However, this is not something to be too concerned about. Outside the city, it is also advised to stick to a speed limit as potholes are quite common, and roads can be unsealed on the outskirts and further into the island.

Parking for visitors who hire vehicles from agencies will most likely be the designated car park of the hotel where you are staying. Parking prices usually range anywhere from $50 to $300 per night but are sometimes included in the cost of your stay; however, that is quite rare. We recommend that you prepare for paid parking as most of the attractions in Zanzibar City will require paid parking in and around the attraction sites. Outside of the city, you will be more likely to find parking and free parking. Therefore, parking should not be an issue if you plan to explore the island beyond the city.
