Make sure the vehicle is full of gas upon pick up. The gas tank indicator on the instrument panels on many vehicles are not very accurate, and can be off by a considerable amount of litres of gas. Also give yourself enough time for the return of the vehicle, especially if you have to catch a flight. This rental agency is very busy.

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Calgary
Calgary is a paradise for lovers of the great outdoors. Situated at the junction of the Bow and Elbow Rivers and with the Canadian Rockies on your doorstep, exploring the surroundings of Calgary is a dream with a hire car. The world famous Banff National Park is only a little over an hour’s drive west and will leave you awestruck with the picturesque turquoise glacial lakes, untouched wilderness, and natural hot springs. Canada’s third largest city by population is located nearly 3,500 feet above sea level and has something to offer for every willing traveler.
Once you land at Calgary International Airport and collect your baggage, follow the signage to the Car Rental Center elevator. On the second level you will find the counters of multiple major car hire companies including Hertz, Avis, Budget, and Thrifty. The drive from the airport to downtown is seamless along the AB-2 S Highway and will only take approximately 25 minutes. If you are heading to Banff National Park you can either take the Highway 1, which will allow you to pass through Calgary on the way, or the Stoney Trail (201) Highway, which is a more direct route.
Canada, and specifically the mountain range, is blessed with wildlife that sometimes feels an explorative urge and wanders onto the roads. Be mindful when driving and keep an attentive eye out for animals. If you do approach any hazardous animals, remember to drive carefully and reduce speed.
Thanks to its higher altitude, Calgary can experience significant snowfall in the winter months, causing difficult driving conditions. The roads are designed to best deal with this snowfall; however it is important that you follow some simple tips to increase your safety. Scrape any accumulated snow off your car before driving, paying extra attention to the windows and headlights. Listen to weather reports and adhere to any warnings; the city has a Traffic Advisory station which you can tune in to at 106.5 FM. Be mindful to reduce your speed when driving in poor conditions and be extra cautious around pedestrians.
While hiring a car in Calgary provides a great deal of freedom and flexibility, it's important to keep in mind the parking restrictions in the city. Calgary has many parking zones with different time limits and fees, and parking enforcement officers are vigilant. Make sure to read the signs carefully and follow the instructions to avoid parking tickets or fines. Alternatively, consider using paid parking lots or parkades, which are located throughout the city and offer affordable rates.
Calgary is a gateway to some of the most beautiful natural wonders in the country. Some of the most popular road trips include Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, and Lake Louise. These destinations offer stunning scenery, hiking trails, and opportunities for outdoor activities. With a Calgary hire car, you can explore at your own pace and take detours as you wish, and you won't have to worry about being limited to the public transport schedule and route.
If you plan to drive in Calgary, it is important to know the traffic laws in the area, such as the use of four-way stops at intersections, where the vehicle to arrive first has the right of way. It is also essential to keep a safe distance from emergency vehicles and to yield to pedestrians at all times. Additionally, be cautious when driving in winter, as roads can be icy and snowy. It is illegal to use a handheld electronic device while driving. Additionally, Alberta uses a demerit point system, which means that if you accumulate too many demerit points, you may lose your driver's licence.

I got there and found out about a policy change that they had NOT made clear anywhere. Specifically, you’re no longer allowed to rent using your debit card. I had paid a $70 deposit beforehand which I was told was nonrefundable. So I wasted $70 and an entire day for absolutely nothing!

Agency had a long (several hour) wait for cars upon arrival. Item left in car (hat) and, even after notifying the agency within minutes, they could not locate the hat. We received follow-up the next day due to the agency not having a record of us returning the car. Overall, a disorganized operation.

Terrible. Rude staff. Didn't want to help me or my wife. Left my wife in tears out the front with zero regard. We went to pick up our car, we had already made the booking in advance because we wanted to be organised. We had tours already paid for that we needed to be at. Arrived at downtown calgary avis on 10th ave and thats where the trouble started. Natalia was who we spoke with, Wouldn't use our international debit card even though it says in the terms and conditions that they do accept international debit cards? She offered zero help as to what we could do to get us on our way, zero compassion or concern for us sitting out the front with all of our bags while my wife was crying. The only input she had was "this isnt worth me losing my job" Went to another avis and received the best service and used our international debit card with no problems. The downtown calgary avis needs to have a serious talk with current staff about customer service. Due to natalia's lack of care and willingness to help, we lost money for a tour that we had already paid for. Lost money having to go elsewhere and hire another car. And caused a massive amount of stress and anxiety that we didn't need on our honeymoon

Everything from budget was great aside from sketchy, scary and suspicious activity happening outside the store when I wanted to do the key drop off. There were a group of three people waiting for me to leave my rental to do the drop off,, they kept pacing between the box and the back of my car (2 males and a female. I felt very unsafe and I am convinced they were waiting for me to drop it off so they can take the key away from me and steal the rental. Please implement more security for night time drop-offs.
Pickup was very poor. The staff at the front desk were very nice and professional. The problems began when selecting and picking up the car. We were asked to check the condition of a black car in an closed garage with poor lighting. Next to impossible. Then you have to show the problems to an agent who has some sort of screen to look further. About a dozen people were all leaving at once and so it took the better part of an hour from being shown the car to actually leaving the airport. Once we got it out into the light it was obvious we had missed a scratch. Upon dropping off, the process was very fast. However I wasn't given a receipt, and the one promised to my email never came. So now I have to chase it down. The car itself was otherwise fine, and was problem free.

They did not have the Rent-A-Car. I reserved when I arrived to pick it up. I was told there were no cars available whatsoever. That left me completely stranded at the airport. I was then offered a vehicle that was an upgrade for an additional $50 a day, but they would not approve my secondary driver because it was an upgraded vehicle. My entire trip was based on renting a vehicle with two drivers. I was going to stay and the secondary driver was going to return the vehicle back to the Calgary airport. Because the car was not available for us. I had to drive eight hours to return the car. I will never rent from dollar/thrifty/Hertz again.

1487 travellers who hired a car in Calgary gave the car agency they used an average rating of 7.3
Some Calgary car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Calgary.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Calgary car hire.
