South Padre Island hotels

When it comes to the best hotels in South Padre, La Copa Inn Beach Hotel is one of my favourites for a couple of key reasons. First, the beach-front location is ideal. I love waking up and lounging on my private balcony with my morning coffee, before going for a walk on the beach just a few steps away.

The amenities here are also top-notch. Fuel up for the day with the free hot breakfast – it’s better than most hotel breakfasts, with made-to-order omelets, Belgian waffles, breakfast tacos, and more. The seafront pool makes for the ideal place to spend a leisurely afternoon. Meanwhile, the on-site eatery La Copa Cabana Bar & Grill serves hand-tossed pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, and expertly mixed cocktails, so you don’t even have to leave the premises to enjoy your time in South Padre to the fullest.

Hole up at the Sand Rose Beach Resort, one of the best boutique hotels in South Padre. Enjoy gorgeous ocean views from the privacy and comfort of your room thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. Rooms are also beautifully appointed, with crisp white linens, premium amenities and a soothing, sea-inspired colour palette.

From there, access a full range of on-site amenities, including a sun terrace, a fitness centre, a business centre, and an outdoor pool. As far as dining goes, the restaurant and bar Barry’s Bistro is a five-minute walk away. This is one of the best spots to eat on the island.

I always enjoy their diverse (and mighty tasty) range of offerings, from tikka masala and Cajun pasta to seafood baskets. It’s all best washed down with a frozen cocktail, of course.

This hotel is located right on the water, which makes for a blissful beach getaway. It’s one of the best hotels in South Padre if you’re looking for a beachfront location that’s also near local attractions. For instance, the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is right across the road, while Schlitterbahn Waterpark is just 15 minutes south of the hotel.

When you’re done sunbathing and swimming for the day, you can fit in a workout at the sleek fitness centre or simply relax by the sparkling seaside pool. When hunger strikes, indulge in Tex-Mex and margaritas at On the Border.

You can even place your order poolside (which I highly recommend doing). The rooms and suites are spacious and comfy, with private balconies and high-tech amenities – some also have partial water views.

Occupying a lovely stretch of beach, this Holiday Inn is a short walk away from the water’s edge. Aside from enjoying a day of fun in the sun, I particularly recommend trying the complimentary homemade cinnamon rolls at breakfast and taking a dip in the outdoor pool at sunrise, before the crowds arrive.

In the evening, kick back and relax in your clean, comfortable room or suite. All accommodations are equipped with free high-speed Wi-Fi, 32-inch flat panel HDTVs, and extra-soft linens. The suites are great for those who need a tad more space, as they each have a sleeper sofa, a wet bar area, and a breakfast nook.

This is one of the best hotels in South Padre for travellers who value a prime beachside location, reliably immaculate rooms, and the convenience of on-site amenities.

Good vibes are guaranteed at the Upper Deck Hotel & Bar, easily one of the best hotels in South Padre for adult travellers (note: no kids allowed). If you’re looking to unwind with a drink, listen to live music, and meet like-minded travellers, this is the place to be.

The rooms here are retro-chic and decorated with bright pops of colour – there’s also a two-bedroom, two-bath ‘beach house’ for larger groups. The spacious, inviting pool here is one of the main draws. You could easily spend hours lounging poolside with a tropical drink in hand, as I did on one of the afternoons I was there.

Conveniently, the pool is heated in winter and cooled in the summer. When the sun sets, make your way to the Upper Deck for dinner, with a super-fun ambiance and a full menu of food and drinks.

Overlooking the ocean, this top-rated hotel in South Padre was designed to take full advantage of the Gulf Coast views. One of the newest and best hotels in South Padre, this resort offers an upscale experience and is especially well-suited for couples.

The tranquil rooms reflect the coastal setting, with their soft, soothing tones. In-room amenities combine comfort, style, and functionality, with flat-screen TVs, ergonomic workspaces, and high-speed Wi-Fi access.

During my time here, I loved swimming laps in the saltwater pool every morning and grabbing breakfast at the Courtyard Bistro. (You can book a special room rate that includes breakfast, which is worth it if you don’t want to leave the hotel in the mornings.) The well-equipped fitness centre, complimentary on-site parking, and laundry services are all nice touches, as well.

I consider this Comfort Inn to be one of the best hotels in South Padre for budget travellers. Expect a warm atmosphere and plenty of amenities that give you real bang for your buck. For starters, there’s free coffee and free breakfast, which includes cheese omelets, fried potatoes, and other hot items. In other words, not just cereal and muffins, like many other hotels in this price range. There’s also an outdoor pool and complimentary Wi-Fi.

The rooms come equipped with a fridge and microwave, which is always handy for storing and reheating food. Plus, the front desk is always ready and willing to share recommendations on what to do in the area.

On that note, you’ll be near tons of entertainment options and attractions, from go-karts to dolphin watching.

Located on Padre Boulevard toward the northern tip of the island, El Delfin Lodge is one of the best hotels in South Padre for beachside tranquillity. Sure, you could easily spend all your time here, but do try to venture out. El Delfin is located mere steps away from the beautiful Laguna Madre Bay, one of only six hypersaline bays in the world. Plan on kayaking, fishing, or windsurfing here – also, the birdwatching is incredible.

After your beach adventures, you can relax, sleep, and swim to your heart’s content. This hotel has a courtyard pool, a picnic area, a coffee station in the lobby, and supremely comfy rooms (some of which have private balconies). I also appreciate that, in a nice nod to South Padre’s art community, El Delfin is decorated with colourful murals and sculptures created by local artists.

Of all the best hotels in South Padre, the Best Western Beachside Inn wins out for its relatively affordable accommodation and great location near the beach and local attractions. Stay here, and you’ll be just a few minutes away from the Dolphin Research & Sealife Nature Center, the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center, Schlitterbahn, and the Port Isabel Lighthouse.

Guests can take a dip in the outdoor pool or hot tub and enjoy the salty ocean breeze. I'm a big fan of the complimentary full breakfast in the morning, and there's also a gym outfitted with a treadmill, an elliptical, yoga mats, and other equipment.

Take your pick from a range of different room options, all of which come with all the creature comforts you need for a great stay, including a microwave, fridge, and Wi-Fi.

The big draw at Margaritaville Beach Resort South Padre Island is the beach – a truly beautiful slice of sand – followed closely by the resort-style amenities. This is as close as you'll get to a luxury hotel in South Padre. I highly recommend indulging in some well-deserved self-care at the spa, which offers a range of massages, facial treatments, mani-pedis, and more.

The charming eateries on the property include LandShark Bar & Grill (think classic American fare and Tex-Mex), swim-up bar the Salty Rim Bar & Grill, and Joe’s Merchant Coffee & Provisions, which serves excellent coffee and pastries.

The island-inspired rooms here are delightfully decorated with tropical decor, and the beds are outfitted with plush linens. Keep an eye out for frolicking dolphins from your private balcony overlooking the water.
