Nassau, on the eastern side of New Providence island, is the capital of the Bahamas in the Caribbean. The city charms with its tropical tree-lined streets and soft-sanded beaches.
Nassau includes the Lynden Pindling International Airport, the largest in the Bahamas. That is the most obvious arrival point for Nassau holidays, but visitors can also arrive by sea, for example through Prince George Wharf Cruise Terminal, a port of call for a variety of ships. The Bahamas has a tropical climate with sunshine all year round, with the best time to visit arguably being spring when there is less average rainfall than during the summer. The Bahamas is five hours behind GMT.
There are a variety of beaches along the coastline where tourists can unwind during their Nassau holidays. Cabbage Beach has a wide stretch of white sand and is rated as one of the world's top beaches. At the beach visitors can rent various water sport equipment such as jet skis and floats. Along the Western Esplanade is Junkanoo Beach near the native Straw Market and Port Nassau. The beach has colourful beach bars where tourists can give traditional conch fritters a try. Cable Beach is a magnificent stretch of sand which boasts a casino and an 18-hole golf course along its beachfront.
Aside from the beaches, holiday goers can gain an insight into the local culture by visiting the city's museums during their Nassau holidays. At the Junkanoo Expo Museum there is an intriguing collection of memorabilia from the seasonal Junkanoo Parade. In downtown Nassau there is the Pirates of Nassau Museum which houses recreations of a pirate town and ship. The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas showcases an array of Bahamian art. Fort Fincastle, an 18th century fort overlooking the city, includes a water-less moat, dungeons, several cannons, rampants and a draw-bridge.
