Petra is located amid the desert of southwest Jordan and contains the Petra Archaeological Park, which is the country’s most visited tourist attraction. Petra was the ancient capital of the Nabataeans, who carved the city into the surrounding red rock over 2,000 years ago. Abandoned in the 12th century, it was kept secret by the locals until rediscovered by the west in 1812. In 1985 it was declared a UNESCO world heritage site.

Getting There

Petra holidays are best taken in the spring or autumn seasons to avoid the hot summer sun. To take the most striking photos, it is recommended to visit early morning or late afternoon, when the sun creates strong contrasts against the rocks. The site is a four hour ride from Amman, or two hours from neighboring Eliat in Israel. Both buses and taxis are available, with buses being the cheaper, yet longer option.

The Treasury

All-inclusive tours can be made for Petra holidays in advance or at the last minute. Either on a tour, or visiting on your own, you will enter through the Siq, which is a narrow gorge lasting 1km. The Siq opens onto a view of the Treasury; a royal tomb carved over 40m high into the face of the rock. This is the most popular attraction and is therefore one of the busiest points. The Treasury is one of the grandest sights, after which you will pass more tombs set amongst the stone before coming across a huge Roman-style theatre.

Staying There

As there is also a monastary and two museums at the site, Petra holidays could easily last several days. Staying at one of the many hotels adjacent to the site is the most convenient option. For holiday-makers on a day-trip, however, the main attractions can be seen in one day. There are restaurants at the site or in the sourrounding city.
