When visiting the northeast United States and Canada, a trip to the world-famous Niagara Falls is highly recommended. Niagara Falls holidays take you to three separate waterfalls straddling the border between the USA and Canada, which also separates the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York. The Falls are situated at the southern end of the Niagara Gorge.
The Canadian city of Niagara is located in the Eastern Time Zone (GMT-05:00). Visiting is recommended between April and October, when the days are longer and temperatures are warmer. Accessing the Niagara Falls is easy - the nearest international airport is in Toronto, approximately 120km to the North, and the area is easily accessible by road, via public transport or car. Coach tours service the area regularly.
The biggest attraction on Niagara Falls holidays may be a ride on the 'Maid of the Mist', a diesel-powered boat that takes you from the Canadian docks past the base of the American Falls and into the basin of the magnificent Canadian Horseshoe Falls. On the American side, visitors can view the Falls from Prospect Point Park, or walk around Goat Island and the Cave of the Winds to get closer to the base of the Falls. Rainbow Bridge is the crossing point between the US and Canadian sides, and offers panoramic views of the falls and gorge.
The Canadian side features additional views of Horseshoe Falls (which are illuminated at night), as well as the 'Journey Behind the Falls', an unguided tour of observation platforms and tunnels near the bottom of the Horseshoe Falls, which allows visitors to actually get behind the Falls. 'Fallsview Indoor Waterpark' is an amusement park featuring water slides, a wave pool and all manner of attractions to keep kids and adults alike happy. Or, for a change of pace, try your luck at Niagara's two casinos.
