Dusseldorf is a culturally varied, exciting destination situated on the River Rhine in western Germany. There are plenty of architectural, historical and entertainment highlights to make your holiday in Dusseldorf a memorable one.
For the best chance of warm weather the best time to take your Dusseldorf holidays is during late spring, summer or autumn. It is a good city to visit any time of year however, as carnival season runs from November until March and the Christmas markets are also a highlight in December. From the airport a bus will take you to central Dusseldorf very quickly and, once there, the city is easily explored either by public transport or on foot. The time zone is GMT +1.
The historic looking old town in Dusseldorf, with its traditional gas lamps, is very famous. Despite its destruction in WW2, the old town has been completely rebuilt as it originally was and is home to many bars, coffee shops and brewing houses. St. Lambertus Basilika, with its characteristic winding tower, is also a favourite with tourists. Dusseldorf holidays would not be complete without a walk down the promenade on the banks of the Rhine, or tasting local dishes such as marinated beef with raisins or pea soup.
One of the city's biggest attractions is its art and culture scene. You might want to purchase an Art:Card, which grants you free access to over 25 exhibitions, galleries and museums across Dusseldorf. Museum Kunstpalast is well worth a visit, with its varied exhibitions ranging from medieval sculptures to contemporary photography. If you are travelling with children, there is the Marionette Theatre, Aquazoo and 'Art in the Tunnel', an exhibition in an unused tunnel under the Rhine.
