A hire car is the most comfortable way to explore not only the city of Dusseldorf but the whole of Rhineland. With a hire car, you can visit the city’s main attractions at your own pace, including the dozens of museums on offer as well as other stunning locations in the countryside. Head to Drachenfels for a taste of the Pieper winery award-winning wine or visit the Schloss Dyck castle, just half an hour away from Dusseldorf.
Most of the major car hire agencies, including Europcar and Sixt, can be found at Düsseldorf Airport (DUS), which is conveniently located just over 4 miles north of the city center. The hire car desks are situated in the Arrivals Hall of the airport’s terminal, and the returns should be done at the Car Rental Center (follow the signs as soon as you get off the highway that leads to the airport).
Dusseldorf has a Low Emission Zone that covers good part of the downtown, so in order to drive there you will need a green sticker that indicates the vehicle is allowed to circulate there. Make sure to ask your hire agency to provide you with the sticker. If you’re driving on the Autobahn (freeway), always stick to the right unless you’re passing someone, as traffic runs really fast, particularly in areas where there’s no speed limit.
Traffic usually flows pretty well throughout the city since residents use public transportation often, but the roads get more crowded during morning and evening rush hours. Avoid driving between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and you won’t struggle with traffic. Avoid driving in the Old Town area where, due to the narrow alleyways and cobbled streets, congestion is more common.
You should be at least 21 years of age to hire a car here, but know that companies such as Auto Europe and SIXT will allow drivers as young as 18 with a valid licence to hire vehicles. That said, most of the major providers will subject drivers below the age of 25 to additional fees, and this may also apply to those over the age of 70; this is especially important if you’re looking for cheap car hire in Dusseldorf. Advance booking through KAYAK is an easy and recommended way to get a hire car.
Whether you use the car hire centre at Dusseldorf International Airport or elsewhere in the city, you will need to have your passport and return ticket along with an additional picture ID and valid domestic driver’s licence. UK residents do not need an International Driving Permit, but we do recommend one for drivers outside continental Europe. Major credit cards are accepted for payment, and some providers, such as Hertz, also allow the use of bank debit cards with Visa and MasterCard logos, for additional convenience.
There are many locations where you can access cheap car hire in Dusseldorf, most of them situated beyond the airport. For instance, SIXT, Sunnycars and Thrifty are among a dozen Dusseldorf car hire providers with offices at Dusseldorf Hauptbahnhof (the central station), which is easily accessible via tram or light rail. In the commercial district of Heerdt, Sunnycars and Europcar provide offices near the D-Aldekerkstrasse transit station. You can also find a few providers, like Global Rent a Car, outside the Provinzialplatz subway station south of the city centre.

I came to the rent office (Enterprise), they asked for my original driving licence, however I had my international driving licence and passport as well. They didn't accept and my journey plan changed. Please inform it in your website, let customers know the documents needed.
My deposit of 900€ euros has not been refunded 10 days after returning the car although no problems was reported. I'm being told this will be corrected ASAP but nothing happens.
Some Düsseldorf car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Düsseldorf.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Düsseldorf car hire.
