Located in the deep American South, Alabama is known for its Southern hospitality, distinct personality, and many areas of natural beauty. Alabama's capital city is Montgomery, whilst the largest city Birmingham has a population of over 1.1 million in its metropolitan area. The diverse geographical landscape of Alabama makes it a joy to explore, with mountains, wetlands, rivers, and long sandy beaches all found within 'The Yellowhammer State'.
Though parts of the state record some of the hottest temperatures in the United States during the summer, the cool southern breeze from the Gulf of Mexico and northern elevation generally keep temperatures under control. With temperatures hovering in the high 20s, summer is the most popular time to visit. Like the rest of the southern states, winters in Alabama are mild. The state can be easily reached by plane via Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport or by car, with 5 interstate highways connecting Alabama with the rest of the country. With extensive scenic beauty and easily navigable roads, cars are the best way to travel, though walking and public transportation are recommended whilst in the bigger cities.
With such a diverse landscape, what you do on your Alabama holidays will depend on where you are. If you're in the south, then a visit to the white and sandy beaches of the Gulf Shores is a must; less busy than Florida's beaches and equally beautiful, it hosts an annual shrimp festival. Whilst in the cities, visitors should dedicate time to exploring the history of the civil rights movement, which began in Alabama, with numerous excellent museums in Montgomery and Birmingham. If your trip is planned for autumn, try to get tickets to an American football game at either Auburn or Alabama University - locals are intensely passionate about their teams and it is a unique experience.
