Where is hot in October? Europe and short-haul destinations

While temperatures are beginning to cool throughout most of Europe, you’ll still find a few balmy spots nearby to enjoy an October sun holiday.

1. Athens, Greece

A man walks along a path full of cacti, admiring the whitewashed city at sunset.

Average October temperature: 20°C

October is a great time of year to visit Greece. The weather is still balmy and popular attractions, like the gorgeous beaches and historical sites, tend to be less crowded. Always wanted to visit Athens? October is a brilliant month see its ancient attractions with fewer crowds and to enjoy delicious local cuisine.

Temperatures in October tend to sit around 20°C, which makes sightseeing possible without working up too much of a sweat. Your first port of call? The Acropolis, where you’ll find a handful of the world’s most magnificent historical structures, including the Parthenon. If you need a little break from the sun, pop into the Acropolis Museum to be amazed at its centuries-old artefacts.

Another reason to visit Athens in October is the cost. Hotel prices tend to drop considerably from the busy school holiday months. According to KAYAK data, the average price per night sits around £127, leaving you with more cash to spend on mouth-watering Greek cuisine.

2. Cairo, Egypt

Average October temperature: 23°C

If Egypt’s legendary pyramids and bustling bazaars have been on your radar for a while, October might be the ideal month for a trip. Cairo’s location means it’s lovely and warm throughout the month, with average temperatures of around 23°C. It’s a great destination for kids, too, particularly if they’re excited by the pyramids.

October is slightly cooler than the previous summer months, which makes exploring more manageable. As well as exploring the iconic pyramids (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), you can also get lost in the city’s bustling souks or take a cruise along the River Nile.

Cairo is also home to several fascinating museums if you fancy a break from the heat. This includes the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Coptic Museum which are both filled with historic treasures.

3. Medina, Saudi Arabia

Average October temperature: 29°C

Medina is another place where it’s hot in October. In fact, temperatures are still scorching at this time of year, with daily averages sitting at around 29°C. There’s very little chance of rainfall during this month, making it an ideal time to browse the city’s landmarks, including the Prophet’s Mosque and Mount Uhud.

If you do need to cool off though, Medina’s museums offer a welcome respite from the sun and fascinating exhibits on the region’s history. October can get a little busy due to those performing Umrah – a religious pilgrimage to nearby Mecca – while temperatures are slightly cooler.

Nevertheless, the city is a particularly good place to visit if you want to learn more about Islamic culture as Medina is considered one of Saudi Arabia’s holiest cities.

4. Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt

Average October temperature: 27°C

If a coastal escape is more your vibe, this Red Sea resort is ideal. Temperatures are still hot in October and you’ll find no shortage of affordable hotels for a week of R&R. In fact, KAYAK data shows the average price for a night is just £34, making it a great option for a cheap sun holiday.

Sharm el-Sheikh is particularly popular for scuba diving and snorkelling adventures, with the sea temperature still a wonderful 27°C. The region is home to 200+ coral reefs, making spotting marine life very likely. Or why not venture away from the sea for a day and into the dunes for a thrilling desert safari?

Where’s hot in October in the US

With its huge diversity (and just huge size), it’s no surprise that so many destinations across the US remain warm well into October. Here are a few of my favourite picks:

5. Los Angeles, USA

Tall palm trees against the silhouette of modern skyscrapers under the scenic golden hour sky.

Average October temperature: 20°C

While summer temperatures can be too hot in Los Angeles (LA), an October getaway strikes a great balance – especially if you want to mix sightseeing and beach days.

This iconic Californian city is bursting with things to do, no matter your interests. October’s 20°C days make it a prime time for hiking in the Hollywood Hills. You could also take a more leisurely walk down the Hollywood Walk of Fame or satisfy your inner child at one of several theme parks (including Disneyland).

With some days reaching upwards of 25°C, some beach time should definitely be on your agenda. My top picks: Venice Beach for people-watching or El Matador State Park for peace and quiet.

Got a couple of weeks to play with? Consider extending your trip beyond LA with a mini USA road trip. Big Sur State Park and historic Monterey are both less than half a day’s drive up the coast.

6. Honolulu, Hawaii

An adventurous individual carefully descends the famed Haiku Stairs, a series of steep and narrow steps carved into the lush mountaintop and surrounded by vibrant green vegetation and stunning panoramic views, navigating the challenging ascent with focus and determination.

Average October temperature: 27°C

Honolulu is Hawaii’s laidback coastal capital and a gateway to many other idyllic islands, giving you options for sightseeing and some serious relaxation. October is an ideal time to visit and soak up some Hawaiian sunshine, with KAYAK data showing average temperatures at a very nice 27°C.

Hitting up crescent-shaped Waikiki Beach is a must. It’s one of the most famous sandy spots on Oahu Island and is particularly great for those who want to try their hand at surfing. Alternatively, there are several hiking trails to tackle in Oahu Island’s interiors.

Honolulu itself is a bustling city, so you’ll find plenty to pique your interest. Tick off historic gems like the 19th-century Iolani Palace and the Pearl Harbor War Museum. You can also get stuck into delicious local and global cuisine, both in Waikiki’s glitzy restaurants or Chinatown’s local haunts.

7. Miami, USA

An empty street along a tree-lined promenade with a wavy concrete wall that separates the beach.

Average October temperature: 27°C

When it comes to where’s hot in October on the US’s southern coast, Miami is a safe bet. The vibrant Florida city is blessed with average temperatures of 27°C in October.

South Beach is fantastic for people-watching. Or make a beeline for Crandon Park Beach at the very end of Key Biscayne for silky sand dunes and a family-friendly vibe. Miami is also famed for its eclectic cultural scene. Don’t skip exploring Little Havana, where you’ll find Cuban restaurants, salsa dancing clubs and the fascinating CubaOcho museum which explores the city’s links to the island.

And, finally, check out the Everglades. Miami is a gateway to this vast national park brimming with subtropical flora and fauna, including crocodiles and alligators. October is a good time to go as the rainy season has well and truly finished.

8. Austin, Texas

Sixth Street music and entertainment district in downtown Austin, Texas, USA

Average October temperature: 21°C

For an October escape somewhere a little different, set your sights on Austin. You’ll experience the best of both worlds with hot temperatures (they can rocket as high as 28°C!) and vibrant autumn foliage.

Scenery and sunshine aside, October is a brilliant month to visit Austin for events. Music fans will want to check out the Austin City Limits Festival, while beer lovers can attend Oktoberfest celebrations around the city.

Warm weather additionally makes exploring the city’s outdoor spaces a real delight. My top picks are Zilker Park for a picnic, Barton Springs or Bull Creek District Park for swims and hiking. For foodies, you’ll be spoilt for choice with tasty tacos and BBQ.

Long-haul October sun holidays

For higher temperatures (and the possibility of a week-long beach break), you’ll need to travel further. Here are a few of the best places to go for sun in October in the rest of the world.

9. Hong Kong

Average October temperature: 26°C

If Asia’s on your bucket list for 2025, what better city to head for than Hong Kong? In October, this attraction-packed (and food-filled) metropolis is usually a warm 26°C during the daytime. This makes it much more manageable to explore than during the city’s soaring summer temperatures, plus you can bag a hotel for £126 per night.

Despite being a busy city, there’s a lot to do outdoors in Hong Kong. Take the cable car to the top of Victoria Peak for magnificent panoramic views of the harbour and the city’s skyscrapers. Spend a few hours in the peaceful Nan Lian Garden, including checking out its Tang Dynasty-inspired pagodas. Visiting with kids? Check out Hong Kong Disneyland and the Grand Resort Deck in neighbouring Macau.

Hong Kong is also well-connected if you fancy continuing your Asia adventure. My recommendations are the Philippines, Thailand or Vietnam.

10. Bangkok, Thailand

Average October temperature: 28°C

Continuing with the Asia theme, the next place on my where’s hot in October list is the buzzing Thai capital of Bangkok. You certainly won’t be disappointed by its temperatures at this time of year – the average day is usually a steamy 28°C.

As well as enjoying the sunshine while sipping a beer at one of the city’s rooftop bar or strolling around serene Lumpini Park, you could also cool off at one of many indoor attractions. Bangkok is famous for its many ornate temples (known locally as Wats), while the National Museum of Bangkok is worth popping into for a little background information on the city’s past.

Despite the heat, mid-to-late October marks the end of Bangkok’s rainy season, with lower humidity levels and cooler evenings for checking out the night markets. Foodies will be in heaven.

Where’s hot and cheap in October?

The first month of autumn is a brilliant time to tour the world’s most spectacular locales. It sits firmly in the off-season for most destinations, meaning you’ll easily find a great deal on flights and hotels.

Check out Athens for a cheap European city break or take advantage of £60 per night hotel rates in Bangkok if you’re hoping for a bigger adventure.

FAQs

While Europe is starting to cool down dramatically, you’ll still find plenty of short-haul destinations – including Egypt – which have blissfully balmy temperatures. If you’re willing to go a bit further afield, Asia and the USA are also packed with hot weather destinations. Spain can also be a good choice at this time of year.
