What type of car is recommended for driving in Antwerp?

Antwerp is quite a compact city, so it’s worth applying that to your hire car selection by choosing a compact vehicle. In the more central areas, close to the city’s historical centre, you’ll find tighter streets with parked cars making it tricky to manoeuvre if in a larger vehicle. Also, should you need to park in the street, a compact car will help you squeeze into those tighter spaces.

What’s the speed limit in Antwerp?

When it comes to speed limits in Antwerp, you will have to keep your speed down to 20-30 km/h when driving around areas like the centre; this depends on the area of the city you are driving in and the speed limit signs on particular streets. In general, urban areas have a speed limit of 50 km/h, while outside of the city, you can drive at 90 km/h. It’s usually 120 km/h on dual carriageways and motorways.

Where are the best places to park in Antwerp?

After you’ve arranged your car hire in Antwerp, one thing to take note of is the parking areas in the city. Antwerp is made of coloured-coded street parking zones. You can find free parking in all areas that are green, while the cheaper paid parking is yellow. However, these are quite far from the city, so it’s advised to park in an orange zone; these are much cheaper than the red zones in the centre, which can be very expensive. Car parks are dotted around the city and generally cost 2-4 € per hour. You can find free car parks at Centraal Kievit P1 – NMBS, just outside the centre, and Scheldekaaien – Cockerillkaai, which is close to the centre, on the riverbank.

If you’re looking into arranging car hire in Antwerp, there are many advantages. Despite being able to get around on public transport to most areas of the city, you’ll have a lot more freedom to zoom around town and to other areas outside the city with a hire car. Antwerp is only about a 45min drive from the capital Brussels, or a roughly 45min drive from Ghent, another beautiful Belgian city. Having a hire car can get you to these cities in a much shorter time than a train or bus can, and you don’t have to rely on the train schedule for your return.
If you’re thinking about car hire in Antwerp, then doing so from Antwerp International Airport (ANR) is worth it. Here you can check out several different offers on a wide range of models and brands, in comparison to other car hire agencies. You can find the car hire desks located in the Arrivals Hall of the airport terminal. Here you can also arrange the pick-up and drop-off of your chosen vehicle, which takes place at the P2 Premium Parking zone.
For Antwerp car hire, it is a good idea to check with the car hire agency if the car can enter the low emission zone (LEZ) of Antwerp city centre. This area is located in Old Town and the centre of Linkeroever across the River Scheldt. Here, cars are strictly prohibited to enter unless they are approved by the LEZ regulations, which you can check with the car hire agency.
Certain difficulties that you will come across when driving in Antwerp include the tight streets and one-way systems that may prove tricky. Of course, like in any city, it’s wise to avoid driving during rush hour, as certain roads can get congested. Main thoroughfares such as Franklin Rooseveltplaats, Kipdorpbrug and Sint Jacobsmarkt are to be avoided if you don’t want to spend time in traffic. In the autumn and winter, Antwerp gets its fair share of rain, so extra caution is advised when trying to navigate in wet conditions.

All good - having never rented a car in Europe I chose Hertz over the other options as am a Gold member and have used Hertz for many years. The pickup/dropoff processes were seamless and the staff went above and beyond helping with an infant car seat.

Compact SUV

When I showed up to pick my car up at 1225 pm on a saturday, the counter was closed. No one was available, no phone number, nothing. The reservation also did not mention a thing about the counter closing at 12. Budget was also closed the next day ( Sunday). I never got my car from budget in Antwerp.

I indicated I wanted a rental from Antwerpen Centraal Station. Instead, after confirming the rental, it became apparent the car was at Antwerpen airport. Thrifty's website was inaccurate and the phone numbers it listed went unanswered. I then had to call Hertz (Thrifty apparently has no actual staff in Antwerp) to get the rental transferred to Antwerpen Centraal. They said they would do this, but when I arrived, the car was not there. I then had to wait nearly an hour for the car to be brought from the airport. Great price on this rental, but lousy, lousy experience.
