Great experiencePros: We were assigned a manual transmission car which neither of us knew how to drive and asked for a different car which we were given. The customer service was great and we loved the car we were given

Worst experience everCons: The address given to us to return the car was incorrect and had us show up at a location that was incorrect. When we dropped the car off at the correct location (which took a while to find), there was a sign on the door telling us to drop the keys off in another location. The other location took us over 30 minutes to find and involved us carrying around all of our luggage all over the street in the rain. It was absolutely the worst experience I've ever had renting a car. I tried calling the 1800 number multiple times and was never able to be connected to someone who could help. I will not be renting from Avis or budget again.

OKPros: Nice staff.Cons: To pick up the car, you need a bit of walk, and the sign to the pickup location was a bit confusing.
Shocked at the one-way fee!!!Pros: AVIS in Bergen was extremely helpful. Due to the bicycle race we could not return the car as planned. The local AVIS people were very accommodating in agreeing to pick up the car and allowing us to catch our flight back to Stockholm. They could not have been more helpful. The poor rating is solely due to the excessive one-way fees and the failure to explain these to us.Cons: Nobody unexplained costs for a one-way rental and fact that they could change this fee at their discretion. The Bergen AVIS office increased the one-way fee by 3x (from 4000 SEK to 12000 SEK) without any notice that they were doing that. We did not discover this until we returned from our trip and I checked our credit card statement. The total cost of the 3-day rental was over $2300.00. We feel cheated and taken advantage of and will likely not rent from AVIS again! When I called AVIS customer service I was told there was nothing that could be done....in essence it was our fault for not asking in advance. extremely disappointed.

Charged extra for "mandatory" insurance with no explanationPros: The car itself was fine.Cons: When I arrived in Bergen, Norway, to get the car, I was charged an additional $167 for "mandatory" insurance, despite the fact that I had selected insurance when I made the original rental agreement. I agreed only because I could not rent the car without agreeing, and my itinerary depended on having a car from that day. Immediately after returning to the US, I researched the "mandatory" insurance, but even Avis was unable to tell me. I am currently in a dispute with Avis through my credit card company. I also received an additional charge of $25.43 with no explanation. When I requested on, Avis sent documents in Norwegian rather than sending docs in a language I can understand.
Kayak damage waiver insurance did not workPros: The car, Keddy,Cons: Booked through Kayak which offered damage waver ins for £16 for 9 days but Allianz did not confirm could not be contacted for 7 days and then offered insurance at the same price for the remaining 2 days!!! and said Kayak should not have advertised it. they rang me on my mobile rather than replying to my email and I ran up quite a bill trying to get a resolution. I asked for the matter to be refrred upward and a a formal response by email but never received it and our use of the car was very much curtailed by the lack of adequate insurance. Have complained to Kayak but many others may be caught out by this scam.
Pros: Everyone was very friendly and helpful.Cons: They were unable to give us the size car I had reserved and it was hard to find the drop-off point at Oslo Airport. That may not be Hertz's fault!

Pros: At least they had different car.Cons: Even though we attached flight they ignored the time we land and gave our car away. We were forced to take 210% more expensive car.

HertzPros: Car was clean and comfortable, got us where we needed to go.Cons: The representative at Hertz uncharged me more than double what I initially paid, by claiming that I reserved an electric car and switching my reservation, even though my original rental agreement made no mention of electric vehicles. This was an unpleasant and costly experience.

Cons: The car was ideified with a scratch on the drivers side at pick up but the picture was of the passengers side. A little confusing thinking the car has healed itself.

Booked 'Compact' series car, recieved electric due to no inventoryCons: Booked a compact series car for honeymoon. Arrived and was told I had booked a 'Green series compact (electric car)' (which clearly my confirmation proves is false). There was absolutely no inventory of gasoline vehicles at all (not even vans), and each local location told me there was nothing they could do and to call a different one. After wasting several hours on vacation trying to get assistance (had over 800 miles to drive, where there didn't exist any chargers for vehicle; electric was not possible to use), ended up booking a gasoline vehicle from a different company. Immediately returned car early, and was told I couldn't get any sort of refund. Ended up wasting a lot of time & money on a car which I did not book, when it was no mistake of my own. My booking was altered due to a lack of inventory, and I didn't get the car originally booked. Was told this was due to my mistake and was taken advantage of when I displayed proof of what was originally booked.

For instance, say you want to see some of Norway’s famed fjords, Hardangerfjord is one great option as it is just 102 km (63.3 miles) away from the city.
