What vehicle you choose to book for car hire in Bulawayo depends on your travel plans. Due to the bad roads, it would be suggested to have some type of SUV that allows you to see the road hazards a bit better; the larger tyres may be a bit more forgiving if you hit a pothole too. If your plans include a trip to one of the nearby game parks, an SUV or 4x4 is suggested. If you are planning on staying in the city and not travelling far, then you could get a medium-sized car. Make sure you receive a fire extinguisher, high-visibility vests and emergency triangles when using car hire in Bulawayo, as you will definitely be asked for them at any police roadblock, which is common.

The general speed limit in town is 60 km/h, and on the national road that links Harare and Bulawayo (the A5 highway), the speed limit ranges from 80 km/h to 120 km/h. It is very common to go through police roadblocks, as these are used to deter speeding and check vehicles are working properly. Always be polite and have your international driver's permit with you. The police may search the car to check you have the necessary fire extinguisher, emergency triangle and reflector vest, and as long as you have all the specific requirements, you should breeze through all the checks with no concerns.

Parking in the city and walking around the centre is a great way to explore some of the sights of the colonial era, with views of Art Deco and Bauhaus architecture. Parking at prime parking zones by major supermarkets, restaurants and food zones does have parking fees, so keep that in mind when planning your outing. The streets are wide and are relatively safe to walk around during the day.
