KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Knoxville

  • There is much to explore in and around Knoxville, so why not make the most out of your holiday and rent a car to gain the most flexibility? It will not only be easier to whizz through the city of Knoxville and visit the zoo, the Memorial Park, or the local golf club, but travelers also get the opportunity to venture out and discover the hidden secrets of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, for instance, which is just under an hour away.
  • McGhee Tyson Airport is about 14 miles from Knoxville center, and the easiest way is to rent a car directly from their on-site agencies, including Hertz, Avis, or Alamo. This way you can start your time in Knoxville hassle-free and will be in the heart of the city in less than half an hour via the US-129 N.
  • Whoever is visiting Knoxville in the winter time should be prepared to drive on ice, as snow is a regular companion of the cold months here. Ensure the hire car has winter tires on and adjust your speed, as snow and rain can turn the streets into icy slides. Sudden braking or accelerating should also be avoided; but with the proper preparation, even the winter in Knoxville is nothing to worry about.
  • Even though the city is not as clogged up as other major US cities, rush hour can still mean congested roads, and it is advised to avoid driving through the city between 8-9am and 4-6pm. Especially the interstates 40 and 640 can be congested during peak times and should be avoided if possible.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire in Knoxville for £31 or less
  • Medium hire cars in Knoxville are around 62% cheaper than other car types, on average

The first car they were about to put us in - the front tires didn’t have any treads left on them. Luckily they put us in another vehicle of equal value with no issue. However, the worker couldn’t give me a receipt because her printer was broken. She said she would email me one, but I never received one until we returned the car in Atlanta.

Budget Rent a Car on Clinton Highway does the bait and switch. They advertised a Tesla 3 for $61 a day and then when I got there they said there's your car a fully electric Genesis. They never had a Tesla in the first place. Liars and deceitful, shady business people. I'm sure they hope that people are desperate enough that they will just take that car, but that is not what I ordered and I called twice on different days to make sure they had the Tesla for me and I was assured they did. We had a vehicle reserved. When we got to the location we were told to have a seat even though the clerk didn’t seem to be working and there were no one else she was waiting on. After about 10 minutes, we were told she had 2 mini vans for us even though we had reserved an SUV. The vans were in pretty bad conditions for rental vehicles. Then we tried to make a debit card payment and it wouldn’t go through. It clearly says on Kayak that Debit cards are accepted. So we called the corporate office to prepay. They took a payment from us and said they were putting the deposit on that as well but that wasn’t true. We tried to call back and were told the corporate office could not take a deposit payment. Now it’s after 5:00 and the worker who asked us to sit tells us she has to get her kids. So we had the reservation switched to the airport location. The person at the corporate office said we would be good to go. When we got there, they asked us for our flight number and told us, we couldn’t rent a car without one. In the end, we used my car. All of this was happening while we were trying to get to Louisiana the following morning for my mom’s funeral. To say the least, this was a very stressful situation. The only thing it taught us was we would not be trying Budget in the future.

So I went to pick up a vehicle. They did not have what I asked for so he wants to give me a different vehicle. I ask him if I have any other option beside what he wants to give me simply he was just so rude. He said that’s all what I have whether you want it or not And then it’s OK. I will take that one then he said you know what I don’t want to give you vehicle Anymore and he said he’s also a owner over there so you don’t have to worry about complaining anybody that was super rude. I never ever go to that place anymore.

Overall the rental experience was good. Fuel mileage was very good 27 mpg. Getting in and out was not an easy task on the drivers side. AC workers great. The issues that bothered me was gear selector method just like to know who thought this idea up. Terrible design. Would never rent that Santa’s again because of the way gear selector was designed

I had reserved a full size SUV Chevy Tahoe and when I got there they had a Hyundai palisades which is a much smaller vehicle. They said it was the same thing because hertz goes by that there is a third row. But I needed the interior space not the need to sit a bunch of people. It was extremely frustrating and stressful. It delayed my trip by 3hrs.

Staff was very helpful and patient. I understand not committing to a refund for planning the default statement shouldn’t be “we will refund it right back in return of the car” should probably be put out front that if after hours it might be delayed and or it may take up to two weeks. My refund was within in two days but for budget and planning worst case scenario should be stated up front. That is not a complaint just a suggestion.

My husband had made the car reservation for me. He asked for pick up and drop off at Knoxville airport. After I waited in line for about an hour, I was told I had to go to the Avis location in town.
