Terrible Experience with Budget in Dominican RepublicCons: The car was not ready when we got there and we had to be shuttled to another location to pick it up. I had purchased additional insurance on Expedia that I was then told when I arrived at Budget that that insurance was not valid for Budget nor in the Dominican Republic at all, so then I had to purchase another whole insurance. The person assisting me was rude and argumentative. He had me signing papers without even telling me what I was signing for nor what the price was going to be that I was committing/signing to. When I asked him the price he pitched a big fight and acted very immature and like I was an inconvenience. The car I got had tons and tons of dents all over it so I then had to make sure that they saw every single one so that I did not get scammed even more.

Pros: Car was clean. People helpful.Cons: That the hidden costs actually result in that the great deal found in internet came out to twice the cost I expected. I have never found the difference to be so huge having rented vehicles in many countries. You need to give clients a more realistic total. It is a very negative surprise to find what the cost really is when you are picking up the car, and you feel helpless to find and alternative solution. You have no alternative but to pay what they want.

Labguage, Insurance and other issuesPros: First, if an interpreter who is Dominican had not accompanied me to the counter, this rental agreement could not be executed. The Budget representative's English was poor. Also, The Budget representative would not accept that I have rental car insurance coverage. I would not be allowed to rent a vehicle with out taking out additional insurance . Then the price for the coverage was negotiated with the help of my interpreter. I was asked to sign a blank credit card slip and a full text page written in Spanish. I refused to sign both. All of this occurred on the pick up. The return had its own set of challenges. The experience makes me question renting a vehicle with Budget, through Kayak and/or in Punta Cana again.

They also said that they DID NOT have it in writing as to where that actual company policy exists. They also did not have any paperwork that showed the different insurance packages. It seemed very sketchy and when I asked if there was a supervisor to speak to the guy said he was the supervisor. My rental went from being $375 to almost $700 with the little insurance scam. BEWARE. Reservations do not matterPros: Reservation made sept 2016 for the ONLY vacation I get all year at Christmas. Confirmed six times - even before leaving LAX! Arrived and was told "sorry lady we have no cars". Without all the horrible details here's a f ew: - 3.5 hours begging/crying at counter they did not care although my reservation was acknowledged. - Christmas day, traveling solo and disabled, they did not care. - Supervisor got on phone, he did not care. - I had nowhere to go and NO transportation. - 3.5 hours later "we found a car it will be $800" THIEVES AND LIARS. I witnessed FIVE other renters on either side of the Thrifty rental counter told the same thing.Cons: Learned from MANY locals, "they do it all the time". - my reservation was for 16 days $300. The outside of the car was clean enough, but the inside of the windshield was very bad. Refracted the sunlight to the point we had to stop and find water and towels to scrub the inside clean. I expected the required liablity insurance to be extra, but the required ups and extras almost doubled the original quoted cost. The car was smaller than what I reserved and there were no other options so we squeezed in and didn't have a very safe situation. There were several stickers partially removed from the windshield that obstructed the view.

By far the worst experience I've had with HertzPros: The car was large enough to fit 3 people and all the luggage comfortably.Cons: I was given a price of $202 when I rented the car.I spoke to a Hertz Club Gold booking agent and they confirmed the price. Once I arrived at the Punta Cana airport: 1.) We waited over 45 minutes for someone to help us. There was nobody at the counter for 30 minutes. Then someone was who was helping another customer walked up, completely ignoring us. She was extremely slow and looked very inexperienced. Another Hertz representative showed up about 15-20 minutes later. 2.) The representative that helped us said that the price we received from the Hertz Club Gold member was just to reserve the car and the price of the car is actually more. I showed him my email receipt and he still said that's not what it shows on his screen. After that, he started adding all of these additional charges including insurance, gas option and a 28% tax. I told him I wanted to decline the insurance and gas options and he said that I could not an that I had to because it's a law in the Dominican Republic.I told him that none of this was ever communicated to me and I would have changed my travel plans to not use a rental car if I knew this was the case. I was stuck at this point and needed to pay for the car which now has cost me around $300 additional to the $202 I originally reserved. 3.) The car I was given was in terrible shape. Not only were there dents on the exterior but the inside was dirty and there were stains all over the seats. The driver side floor mat was not meant for the car. It partially covered the gas pedal and made it dangerous to drive. on top of all of this, the tires were bald and the car slide many times when I was braking. I have pictures of the dents in the exterior, floor mat and tires as proof. Additionally, I was only given the key to the car and not given the keyless entry module. This was absolutely the worst experience I've ever had renting a car and I was expecting much better service and vehicle since I was renting through Hertz. Also, the website and Hertz Club Gold representative should have explained the insurance and tax scams before renting the car. I will not be using Hertz in the future due to this experience.

Terrible experiencePros: NothingCons: They wouldn’t honor our reservation, claiming it wasn’t made there and that it was made another place further away from airport. Also , they said we got there late and we didn’t call. How can you call when your on the plane? Reservation was made for after 12 and we arrived at 2. Lastly they said we ran out of economy cars so all we have is an suv so that’ll be almost $1,000 instead of $360 original reservation. When we refused to rent like this we asked to use a phone to call a local friend. None of the rental call agents let us borrow a phone! There were people sitting there that had arrived before us and at least 10 more reservations that showed up after us to all be told the same thing. We were shocked again when, after 20 minutes of arguing with the clerk and then with the main office, and were still told there was nothing the company could do for us. Having run out of options, with a 5 hour drive to reach our accommodations, we offered to pay more if they got us a car. Explore the very eastern tip of the Dominican Republic on your own four wheels and rent a car for your time in Punta Cana. With beautiful beaches and the inland stretching out seemingly infinitely, a car is definitely a must to get from A to B in this region. Make the most of your holiday and reach any beach with its wonderfully clear blue water or a stunning golf course conveniently and in comfort.
Punta Cana International Airport is plopped amidst the region’s heart and is only a few minutes from many popular destinations. Various car hire agencies are situated at the airport, including companies like Thrifty, Avis, and Hertz. This remote corner of the world will most likely require visitors to have their own wheels if they do not want to be dependent on taxis.
