If you would like to visit things within the city, then we recommend you make use of a compact or economy car. These vehicles are ideal for driving down narrow streets and for parking under pressure from traffic, as they are smaller and easier to control. If you would like to visit some places outside the city, then we recommend an SUV or an intermediate car, as they are more spacious, more comfortable and better designed to deal with country roads and longer journeys.

The speed limits in Salerno follow the national speed limits of Italy, and you can only travel at 50 kph when within the built-up, urban areas. There are some parts where the speed will be reduced to 30 kph, such as when you drive in residential areas or near schools. Outside of urban areas, the limit is usually 90 kph unless signposted, and on dual carriageways, it is 110 kph. The maximum speed limit in Italy is 130 kph on motorways.

Free parking spaces can be difficult to come across in Salerno, but you will have more possibility to do so if you try and park outside of the city centre. In the rest of the city, you can find spaces to park on the street that require you to use the traditional pay-and-display features; we recommend that you bring change, just in case the ticket machines don’t return change or accept cards. There are a couple of car parks that we recommend for you, including the Easy Parking Salerno, which is a garage that is open 24 hours a day, and Central Parking, which is located on Piazzetta Francisco Cerenza.
