Top tips for hiring a car in Corfu Island
The roads on Corfu can differ quite markedly from area to area, so if you’re planning on thoroughly exploring the island, your best hire car choice would be something like a versatile SUV or MPV. Many roads have been newly surfaced or constructed, and these are of high quality. However, the older roads haven’t been widened to cope with modern-day tourist traffic demands, particularly in the Mountain Pantokratoras region. To explore the smaller villages, you might prefer to park and walk through the narrow streets.
If you’re travelling with children and hiring a car through KAYAK, please note that there are clear regulations in Corfu that cover driving with children. All children under the age of three must be in an infant child seat. From the ages of three to 11, children must be seated in an age-appropriate child seat that matches their size. Children from the age of 12 may wear regular seat belts, as long as they are over four feet four inches tall. You can arrange for child seats as bookable extras when you make your KAYAK reservation.
It’s advisable to carefully plan your route before embarking on day trips. Get out your map beforehand and look for the main roads, as these are less demanding to drive on. Even on these roads, hairpin turns are common, so it’s best to have an experienced driver at the wheel. When you get onto the smaller rural roads, drive slower and be ready to stop and reverse to a wider part of the road to accommodate oncoming traffic – other drivers will do the same for you.
As it is a small island, you won’t find as many petrol stations or service areas along the major roads as you would in the UK or on the Greek mainland. It’s a good idea to fill up your tank whenever you stop. Also note that you won’t find any automatic petrol pumps where you can use a card to pay, and some petrol stations only accept cash.

Coming from the UK, the first adjustment you’ll have to make is that you’ll be driving on the right-hand side of the road and overtake on the left in Corfu. Distances are also signposted in kilometres. It will take a bit of getting used to, but you’ll settle in swiftly enough. The traffic conditions are nowhere near as congested as on the mainland of Greece, so driving is more relaxed. In the rural areas, the roads can be narrow and you’ll encounter many blind curves and unguarded embankments, so drive with caution, even if you’ve hired an off-road vehicle.
