The airport is confusing so you'll need to go to the lower level where all the car rental places are
MollieOct 2024
Book a compact car if you have 1-3 people. the streets are narrow, the parking garages are narrow. you'll be able to navigate far better in a compact car. FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF COMPLETELY with where to return the car. the map they give you is unclear and you will likely get lost. it took us nearly an hour to figure out where to go. very stressful. make sure you check the fuel is indeed a full tank, take a photo, have them confirm. they will charge you for their mistakes.

Parking on streets and parking garages for large vans in Germany is not recommended. Smaller vehicles are recomended.

Book well in advance and confirm you are getting what they say they have. Also know that Frankfurt am Main is not at the airport.
Verified travelerJun 2023
One quick recommendation I would give is when returning the car at the end of the trip, stop at a gas station at least one town prior to fill up your tank. It is tough to find the gas station at Frankfurt FRA Airport, even though it is noted on maps, as the roads all go around like spaghetti, so even with the GPS on, it's next to impossible to find it unless you know what you are doing prior. It would be nice if Frankfurt Airport put up signs to direct you to the gas station, as just as you think you are getting close on the GPS and maps, all the roads switch to another direction. This might preclude you from refilling the car's gas tank prior to turning in the car at the end of the rental.

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Frankfurt am Main
If you plan on driving on the Autobahn, make sure you stick to the appropriate lane. The far left lane is only for drivers who are driving fast or passing. If you see flashing lights behind you then that means get out of the way because a fast car is coming up from behind and needs you to move to the right lane. In general the idea is that slow cars should be the ones that move over rather than forcing speeding cars to pass slow ones. Drivers should also note that many sections of the Autobahn do have speed limits, so keep your eyes out for any signs that come up.
Is picking up the hire car on your list of to-dos upon arriving in Frankfurt? For travelers with flights landing at Frankfurt am Main Airport, the hire car counters are found in the main lobbies of both terminals of the airport.
Biking is extremely popular throughout Frankfurt and all of Germany. Drivers should keep their eyes open at all times for bikers that may be passing alongside them, especially at intersections. Also, many bikers use hand signals to let drivers know when they are turning, so drivers should keep that in mind when driving behind them.
Frankfurt’s morning rush hour usually picks up around 6:30 a.m. and lasts till 9:30 a.m., while the afternoon rush hour peak starts about 4:00 p.m. and cools down soon after 7:30 p.m. Some of the most congested roads during rush hour include the A3 highway, the B8 highway, and Baseler Strasse in the downtown area.

In addition, be aware that drink-driving laws are strictly enforced and all passengers must wear a seat belt.
When in your cheap car hire in Frankfurt, it’s good to know about the Low Emission Zone, ensuring that if you want to drive in this area that your vehicle has a green sticker allowing you to do so. The zone is signposted with a red circle that has ‘Umwelt’ written in the middle, indicating you are now entering the LEZ. No attendants at drop-off. No clear instructions for where to leave key. Next morning I got an email about a "scratch" on the bumper (which I knew nothing about), with a 1050 euro charge. Now I'm having to deal with insurance. Poor communication from Enterprise throughout!

My van that was reserved and pre paid in advance was given away due to my flight being delayed. Imagine the person in front of you in line is discussing how a van just became available as you stand there asking if the van being given away was yours. And yes it's in fact your van. Then no vans were left to rent and you have to rent a hotel and hope a van becomes available the next day. Fingers crossed as you are in a foreign country not knowing what to do next. I was also awake at that point over 26 hours. Tired exhausted and jet lagged. So my experience was 10 out of 10 the worst case scenario.

The paperless transaction resulted in my paying much more I add-one than I realized. I couldn’t see the impact of the charges, and the salesman smoothlyexplained them in a way I did not follow well. I will demand to see the figures in writing next time. Also, the navigation system in the car needed updating - several times we were on a major autobahn or cloverleaf where we needed guidance, and the nav system thought we were in a field.
Tania did a great job to get us on the road as quickly as possible with the best available vehicle.

It was way too hard to find the rental location, which is in a shopping mall on the second floor

Great new car with Bluetooth CarPlay, charging ports (USB-A). It was a plug-in hybrid, and we were not given any instructions on how to charge it. We returned it with an empty batter and were not charged extra (just had to fill it with gasoline). Pickup at Frankfurt airport was a mess. They did not have enough cars ready. We wound up getting one after about 45-60 minutes total time in line. They didn’t have enough agents, and the ones there were very nice but didn’t control the crowds well, who started trying to cut in line. Other than the very stressful check-in, the rest of the experience couldn’t have been better

Everything was fine the pick up and drop off except that I booked a Seat Ateca or similar and i got a Fiat tipo which is smaller but they insisted thats its the same category the boot space in the Seat Ateca is 510 liters while its 440 in the Fiat.. In addition to that the car is smaller than the Seat. As i said everything was good except that i dont think i got an intermediate SUV. As i always encounter if the selected car is not available i should be upgraded not downgraded. Thank you
Quick and fast service, both in picking up and in return. One thing I did not like is when I asked if I can return the car in the train station they said there is fifty Euro charge. In the past there was no problem to return the car in a different place within the same city.

Reserved a car, but they didn't have a car, made us rearrange our whole schedule. You see, anyone can take a reservation, that's the easy part. It's the holding of the reservation that's the hard part. Seriously though, it did mess up our travel plans and we didn't get to go to Cologne.

They can do a lot better with the experience. The pick up lady counter was just obnoxious and provided false information. This was a total mess. I had euros on my european credit card but they wouldn't take it. Mentioning I should see upon returning the vehicle which was not an option
The billing was absolutely absurd - Kayak offered me a rate of less than $50/day. Budget then added all these hidden fees — like a 130€ “location” fee for renting the vehicle for the airport. The final bill was more than 2x what Kayak had offered me.

Nothing. Due to the autobahn being shut down for some security incident, we were unable to get to the rental pickup in time (only two hours later) and they had cancelled our reservation stating we were too late. Absolutely zero customer service from kayak and I even lost the $200 insurance for a car I never got to rent.
Some Frankfurt am Main car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Frankfurt am Main.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Frankfurt am Main car hire.
